Ashbury Heroes travel Through Time to save Battle Queen

by Cedric Fruvous

For almost a year now, scholars in the Sage’s Guild have been toiling to unlock the secret of Queen Sidraste Deeanan, and how to best free her from the depths of Amora Dun, as reported earlier in the Ashbury Times.

On Friday evening on the first of Gryphon, an Etherian appeared before the gathered adventurers and nobles of Ashbury in the Dragon’s Flagon seeking Sage’s Guildmistress Shya Corak. When Shya spoke up, the Etherian presented her with a glowing sword, the fabled artifact Validus.

The Etherian explained that the Iniquitous had grown so strong that there was no way to pierce the heart of Amora Dun and rescue the Battle Queen, even with the magic blade. The despair this information brought was quickly met with a glimmer of hope. She explained that it was possible to travel back in time, arriving before Sidraste would make the Great Sacrifice.

Duke Aramis quickly accepted this plan, stating that he would lead the expedition personally. The Etherian replied that he could not. His Grace seemed a bit incensed at this. “I can and I most certainly will,” he stated forcefully to the Etherian. She responded that as a land bonded ruler, His Grace would not be able to travel in time.

Clearly disappointed and unhappy about the situation, His Grace announced to the assembled adventurers that Ashbury’s warlord, Baron Agnar Anti-Tiburon, would be in charge of the endeavor. The assembled Barons spent much of the rest of the evening speaking with Shya and myself about the time in which we would soon find ourselves.

Early the next day the Etherian reappeared and asked if we were prepared. I informed the gathered heroes that we would be traveling nearly 3,000 years backward to a time when the kingdom was warring not only with belligerent barbarians, but also with a powerful necromancer who commanded legions of undead. She informed us that we would all appear as human soldiers in the Icenian army. With that being done, we were magically transported by the Etherian to the Icenian year 470.

We appeared in a vast field, and military officers immediately began forming us into ranks. It appeared that we were new recruits into the Royal Army.

We were separated into military units and sent out to quell barbarian uprisings with brutal military force. It also became clear that we were in the Kingdom’s capital, located at this time in history in Moonvale (or Blythedale to Ashbans.)

When we returned, we were addressed by our commanding officer Baroness Selene Crestivus of Moonvale, Duke Melagar Montenro, and Queen Sidraste herself. (Duke Melegar would later ascend to the Icenian throne when Sidraste disappeared, and be corrupted by Amora Dun while King. He is better known to most Ashbans as the undead King Melegar.)

She announced that the Dark Countenance Damon Thule could be expected to launch a foul attack of his undead that night, and stressed how important it was that we not crumble before his onslaught, explaining that we, her “new recruits,” were Icenia’s last line of defense.

Later in the day, a mage named Penthantos (who would later create Pentahos’ Gaffe, better known to Ashbans as Ator’s Gaffe) arrived in town stating that he was attempting to build a magical mirror to destroy Damon Thule, and requesting aid from various Ashbans in assembling the items needed for the ritual. This mirror would later successfully banish the Dark Countenance back to Amora Dun, effectively ending the Necromancer War.

The day passed with occasional skirmishes with barbarians who were claiming that the Icenians had invaded their territory and ordering us to depart or be slain. This was a prelude to a major assault by the barbarians whose leader parlayed with Queen Sidraste, ordering her to take her people and leave or he would “shove that magic sword down her throat.”

A full-fledged battle was not long in coming. Many times during the fighting, Queen Sidraste ordered the Ashbans to form up, but since few of the adventurers are trained military soldiers, she found us to be an undisciplined (though skilled) lot.

As promised, as darkness fell, Damon Thule’s forces began attacking the city. First, some undead came about, attacking in small groups and being easily defeated. Soon however, Damon Thule personally led a terrifying band of his necromantic constructs into the city. Thule himself, a horrible figure literally crackling with the power of Amora Dun, led the assault seemingly pushing back our troops.

The tide of the battle was turned however when Squire Rasq Darkmoon and Klarion Darkmoon released Magic Storms upon Thule and his troops. Thule himself created a gateway directly to Amora Dun and escaped, inadvertently pulling the controversial adventurer Calis Blackheart with him. Jakartin, a gypsy traveler to Ashbury, seeing a fellow warrior in trouble, dove in attempting to save Calis before the gateway closed. Both later resurrected at the Icenian Army’s healer’s guild.

Later in the evening, Queen Sidraste approached some of the Ashbans, voicing her suspicions about us. The keen monarch had noted that many of us knew each other too well to be new recruits, and also noted our impressive array of magical items. Guildmistress Shya countered by saying that we were adventuring groups before the war, but Sidraste was not mollified by this response.

Feeling she had little option, Shya then informed her of our true reason for being there, attempting to prove her case with information about Validus.

Sidraste was understandably skeptical with this explanation, and in fact dismissed us as being mad. We were able to get her to give her word (albeit reluctantly) that if an Etherian appeared to her she would consult us, where upon we could substitute a replacement for the Great Sacrifice.

Unfortunately, Baron Olin Redbeard, seeing she was distraught with this knowledge, offered her an amnesia elixir and she accepted. The Ashbury Barons present (Agnar, Olin and Jonathan) ordered that no Ashban broach the subject with her again.

The next day was rife with barbarian attacks, ambushes, visits from various Icenian nobles of the day as well as Penthantos continuing to seek help to gather pieces for his ritual. In addition, many reported that the Dark Countenance from our time, the mad warrior Freejyn, appeared in spirit form and attempted to warn Ashbans away from our mission, assuring us of our failure. It seemed the forces of Amora Dun from our time were aware of our plan, and were taking steps to stop us.

To that end, later that evening constructs began rising from the ground and attacking the Queen. When defeated, crests were found on them that were not recognizable to the Icenian warriors, but which the Ashbans instantly recognized as the mark of the Blackbourne Compact. (Indeed, Baron Olin, after our return to our time, would voice his belief that Duke Melegar was in fact Count Requin in a guise. The theory makes sense, if the Virtuar hold the power to send us back and disguise us as Icenian soldiers, and surely the Iniquitous hold the power to do the same with their champions.)

Late in the eve, Duke Melegar announced that Queen Sidraste and the entire royal family had vanished from the royal bedchambers. A sense of failure swept through the assembled Ashbans, and it seemed as though the Iniquitous had won the day, and perhaps the war as well.

Shya then announced that Validus could take us to the heart of Amora Dun to dissuade the Queen at the last minute. The problem of convincing Duke Melegar of this was removed by Baron Agnar, who arranged to have him struck unconscious from behind and an amnesia elixir administered (lest he awake in time to stop us) and an application of Mitguard’s Forceful Imprisonment cast so he could not be harmed by passers by. Now free to act on our own, we used the blade to transport us to the heart of Amora Dun.

Once there, we found a horrid wall of claws and appendages blocking our way. It was resistant to magic, attacked anyone who came too near, and the mere sight of it caused many Ashbans to flee in terror (including myself.)

The wall was battered to uselessness by Ashbury’s fighters, and we continued on, acutely aware that time was short. We were harried the entire way by creatures to foul to contemplate.

Many times we were pinned down in our advance as undead assailed us from all directions. Soon we were able to fight our way to a large wall of pure darkness, with only a small hole marring the blackness.

As we pondered this, we were still coming under attack from undead. Thinking quickly, Shya plunged Validus into the hole, and the wall of darkness shattered, revealing a path through the black void.

We soon came upon and entered a building that seemed to be completely compiled of darkness. The coldness inside was nearly unbearable. Even the coldest winter does not chill to the bone as quickly as did this foul place.

Inside we found Queen Sidraste, alone and about to make the Great Sacrifice. We approached her, begging her to wait. Initially she though we might be agents of Amora Dun, sent to dissuade her from her intent, but she soon realized that we were her soldiers.

We told her that we had to speak with her and she called forth a group consisting of Barons Olin, Jonathan and Agnar, Guildmistresses Shya and Natasha and myself (who was quite surprised to be included in such notable company, by the way.)

We attempted to inform her again of our true identity and purpose, but were again met with skepticism. Even Shya showing Sidraste Validus did not convince her. “You could have received that after I gave it to the Lady of the Mists,” she countered.

The turning point in the talks came when Baron Jonathan informed her that he was a mason of the lightstone. The Battle Queen demanded proof, but Jonathan had apparently lost his stone while fighting his way through Amora Dun. He called up Squire Rasq, who hadn’t lost his stone, and the young sarr presented it to the Queen.

When Sidraste laid her hand upon it, the stone began to glow brightly, seemingly going a long way to convince the Lady of the Swords that we were telling the truth, but not that she should go with us. “Your Kingdom still needs you in our time,” I pleaded in desperation. “Let one of us take your place.”

“But who is willing?” Was Sidraste’s immediate response. It was a question that had plagued us throughout the expedition, and had been discussed often yet no definite answer had been agreed upon, most parties preferring to deal with such an unpleasant question when the time came. Unfortunately the time was now.

Shya immediately stated that if she were not necessary to wield Validus to return us to our time, she would take Sidraste’s place. Before another could speak, Guildmistress Natasha spoke up, “I shall go.” She said.

Never before had three words meant so much.

Queen Sidraste addressed the assembled Ashbans. “Does anyone dispute that this woman is pure of heart?” Not a single voice could be heard to dispute the question.

With that, Sidraste agreed to be replaced by Natasha, and lay upon the floor, slowly vanishing, to be awakened in our time. The assembled Ashbans approached Natasha to give her words of encouragement and praise, as well as souvenirs on a few occasions. Perwin doffed his bakers hat, giving it to Natasha, and Rasq surrendered his lightstone to her.

Amid the sad faces and a few tears, Natasha faced the Ashbans and bid a simple goodbye. With that, the darkness of Amora Dun engulfed her, obscuring our view of her.

We exited the building with a bittersweet taste in our mouths. We had succeeded, yes — but at a great cost.

As we emerged back into the Icenian town, we encountered an unruly mob on the road. Thinking it our enemies, swords were drawn and aura summoned. The words “For Natasha!” were shouted by someone, and echoed by all. We surged forward, ready to fight to prove that her sacrifice meant something.

The mob, however, was nothing more than Icenian soldiers celebrating the defeat of Damon Thule by Pentahos’ mirror, and thus the end of the war.

Guildmistress Natasha Roskaya made a great sacrifice to see that the forces of Amora Dun do not succeed. The best way to honor her is to see that she did not make this sacrifice in vain. Remember Natasha, people of Icenia.

Remember Natasha.

Natasha's Last Letter

The following letter was discovered by Baron Olin after Natasha’s sacrifice. He has provided the letetr to the Ashbury Times for publication:

Baron Olin,

We’re going to leave in a few hours. I have a feeling that I’ll be gone for a while. Please send this letter to the newspaper. Thank you for everything, dear friend.

Hello everyone. I just wanted to write a few words to you. Please be good to each other and don’t be angry about stupid things. Shya, looks like you’ll be taking my place sooner than I thought. Take care of everyone and be vigilant. I thank you for taking over on such short notice.

Gypsies: stop arguing! I love you all.

Duke Aramis, Nobles of Ashbury: I am glad to have been under the command of those who truly embody the concept of Nobility.

Baron Olin, please see that Safehaven is taken care of and help Shya get established.

To all of my friends, whose numbers I believe to be one I could not count on any number of hands and feet. I have gone (or will go, but if not I’ll sure feel silly when Olin finds this letter, ha!) so that everyone may live and be happy. Please live and be happy together — all of you.

I’ll fight the good fight as best I can with Amora Dun — if you see any of those dark creatures or a big, evil dragon with bunny ears, flapping its arms and braying like an ass, that would be me.

May your hand be steady and guided by Fate, your hearth be warm and your love be boundless. Until next we meet.

Katrin Natasha Stepauyk Roijo Roskaya
Ashbury Healers Guild
Barony of Nordenn

After returning to the year 600, a small ceremony in honor of Natasha was performed before the Healer’s Guild. Present were His Grace and many of his nobles. Tears were shed and words were exchanged but emotion carried the silences that were present.

His Grace announced that Natasha was scheduled soon to be lorded by the Paladins, and then he posthumously knighted her, bestowing upon her the title of “Dame Natasha.” A tree was to be planted in her honor before the Guild.

War in Trellheim Heating Up;  Requin Comments

As the summer months end, the campaigns within the western portion of Ashbury are heating up.

Thousands of humanoids under the banner of the nefarious Count Requin have come to his calls of war. Requin’s army, led by his elite regiments of human mercenaries, have begun to step up their offensive — assumedly to capture several more estates before winter sets in.

The Ducal Army itself is sorely taxed; however it is expected that several Icenian regiments are now completing their training and rushing forward to bolster the defenses of Ashbury.

With Icenia’s assistance, His Grace will possess enough troops to enjoy nearly a three-to-one troop superiority over Requin’s troops. Anticipating the arrival of these reinforcing Icenian troops, Requin has changed his tactics as he employs a philosophy that can only be considered butchery. Several villages have been decimated by enemy troops and their structures burned to the ground.

Requin continues this push both eastward through Trellheim, in Queensboro towards the holdings of acting Baron Olin Redbeard, and finally south east towards Ashbury itself. A large force of trolls is spearheading this force, led by several regiments of powerful bone trolls.

Rumors abound that Bonescythe, infamous former general of Fangthorn, has sworn fealty to Count Requin and brought several companies of elite war trolls to Requin’s banner. Rumor has it that they were promised most of the Tower Hills for their service, but it was said that Bonescythe wished only the privilege of killing humans who had so long harmed his people.

To track developments within the Blackbourne Compact, we have been provided this recent interview with Requin himself. We thank our eyewitness news correspondent, Teressa Grevairr, who nearly gave up her life to get this interview with us:

Count Requin Drager, let me be the first to thank you for providing us with an interview. I am sure there are many within the confines of Icenia that wish to hear what you have to say.

Teressa, I am most assuredly pleased that you have chosen to ask me to conduct this interview. It is unfortunate however that you have chosen to begin this discussion by mentioning the rogue nation of Icenia. Icenia does not exist except in the minds of the madman Gareth Apwhatever and his puppet Aramis Llyrr. Unlike Aramis Llyrr, I do not forget my vows to my former liege. In the name of Evendarr, I go forth and conquer, to someday restore us to our world and to bring my people home.

I see, Count Requin. Perhaps you have discovered some way to restore us to our old world?

Currently my advisor on magic, Lord Ingregavor, grapples with the dilemma. He assures me he is nearing a breakthrough.

No insult intended of course your excellency; however what if he cannot return us to our former world? Would it not be best to incorporate ourselves into this new Kingdom and tie our destiny with their own?

It would be a tragedy for us to do so. Already they take our lands and devour our resources like locusts. Ashbans and those of Tyrra will become secondary citizens. Take Forderick for example — a corrupt house of nobles trying to impugn the good nature of an designated heir of the Nordenn family. They are scum of the worst sort! And look at the Cresitvus family — former Kings of Icenia! They are undead now, a father and son comedic team of liches. If this is an example of Icenian nobility, I say cut off the head of this hydra before it keeps growing!

You wish to elucidate us on your execution of Duchess Lilith?

While I intended to hold Duchess Lilith as a guest in order to come to some agreement with Aramis Llyrr, she chose to mock my dedication to my liege and King, spitting on me, my beliefs, and my fealty to Evendarr. I pushed her down the stairs, placed her upon a rack, tortured her, and then decapitated her. So is the fate of traitors.

I see, Count Requin.

If you condescendingly say “I see, Count Requin” one more time, you’re going for a ride down the stairs as well.

Well, Count Requin! Let’s move on. There are reports that the Blackborne Compact allows the use of necromancy, as well as allowing foul experimentation on peasants and humanoid creatures.

Nothing of this nature is occurring within my realm unless it is happening in the area surrounding the estate of Capulus. The vampire Morganna and his cronies are a constant thorn in my side. Would I had the resources I would burn the entire estate of Capulus to purge the stink.

I see ... I mean, excellent, Your Excellency. So what future plans do you see in store for Ashbury once your victory is complete?

I see a lot of restructuring. I see a world where justice is swift, and bureaucracy is a thing of the past. I see a world where the darkness isn’t frightening any more. I see the future of Ashbury as a quiet and peaceful place, where one doesn’t need to worry about their children playing outdoors. Where one isn’t worried about taxes, or even anguish and pain. I see a world free of pain, free of concerns. I see it being a very quiet place.

Count Requin, are the reports of your working with the beings of Amora Dun true?

Who, the Iniquitous?

That’s the name I was thinking. Are you currently serving this long interred evil?

Absolutely not! I am in complete control over the Blackborne Compact. My first duties are to the people of Ashbury, and my fealty is sworn only to the King. I serve no one on this world. Soon however there will be a lot of Ashban nobles taking a knee before me.

So what you are saying is you are not allied with the Iniquitous?

Serving I am not. Allied with them? I find many of my goals correspond with them.

How is that?

We both see the destruction of Ashbury as a top priority so a new world can be born — Where men and women of insight rise to rule and control others, where the strong lead the weak. Where the strong protect the weak, and the strong cull disloyalty like fat from a steak of beef. The Iniquitous and I agree that the control of Amora Fortannis is a goal worthy of us, that for many years we have both been denied what is actually ours by right. Soon I will attack.

Lord Ingregavor, do you have anything to add?

Ingregavor: No.

Are you a Dragon?

Ingregavor: No.

Are you a member of the Mal Draco?

Ingregavor: Shut up or I will rip you apart.

Well, turning back to Count Requin Drager as we conclude our interview: Are there any final words you would like to convey to the people of Icenia?

Yes, to my allies behind the lines: The Shadow has covered the Barn. The swarm of locusts has descended upon the crops. The cattle have been herded to the North West Pasture. The Ballista is now fully cocked, and aimed at the Baker. The breach must be maintained, and the flowers picked. Thank you Theressa for your time, and I am sorry that my wife Sonya Hellfax could not attend. She has been a bit under the weather lately I am afraid.

That is not a problem, Your Excellency. I am looking forward to printing your views.

Well, that is another conversation. Let us discuss that “off  the record,” if you will.

In conclusion, I must say in my short follow up that the Blackborne Compact is truly a place of beauty and prosperity. The hundreds of years of warfare with the trolls and other monster races is non existent here. Side by side human and goblin are working together for a better tomorrow. There is even talk of the building of several cities to various races not commonly considered friendly to Ashbans. Truly, the good Count has done wonders in these dangerous times.

Sarr Nobles Cause Trouble in Ashbury

There has been unrest to our south for as long as Ashbury has been present on Amora Fortannis, but some issues were resolved and new ones created at the start of Gryphon.

King Zutclag from Junjeq had been suffering under a mysterious illness for over a year, and his primary wife Queen Misaka had traveled to Ashbury in order to get help. It appeared that the King had been poisoned by a slow acting elixir whose ingredients were very hard to find. Although it was not certain that this was the case, the Queen had to try and obtain the antidote. In her home country, when an ingredient for the antidote was found, invariably the holder would be mysteriously killed and the ingredient would be missing. Someone obviously wanted the King dead.

Misaka came to Ashbury to seek help from the Ashbans. Among those coming to her aid were Saja and Rasq, who spent a year searching for the components.

Their path was made more difficult by the King’s son, Prince Utclag, along with his powerful assistant General Uktet. Both at various times over the past year tried to threaten and bribe Saja into turning over the ingredients.

Apparently Utclag, as next in line, was more than anxious to take his father’s place. The Prince had led the King’s army into the neighboring lands of Darclag and was showing some success, and his thirst for power was as great as — well, as great as his father’s.

Queen Nikwik of Bobithet also showed an interest in the outcome of this disagreement; her lands are on the other side of Darclag.

The situation came to a head when all arrived in Ashbury at the same time. Misaka was there to gain the ingredients; Utclag was there to prevent them from getting to her; and Nikwik was there to watch the sparks fly.

Also in attendance was the hobling Lord Roldo of Home, who apparently makes quite a profit from all of this by selling arms and supplies to all of the sarr. He happily spoke to all three and seemed friendly with everyone.

Tensions were tight. His Grace Duke Aramis demanded that no blood be shed in Ashbury, and Utclag agreed so long as his mother were turned over to him to be brought back to Junjeq to face charges of treason for poisoning her husband. His Grace, pointing out that we have no treaty with any of the sarr lands, declined to allow her to be taken and stated that if anyone were to attempt to take her against her will that they would be treated as aggressors under our law. He did not go so far as to say she would be given sanctuary.

Also taking sides and getting involved were the adventurers Parduc, Squire Brynn, Klarion, and Morrigan. All were aligned against the Prince, a fact which did not escape him.

At various times, it seemed as if a battle would break out, but Utclag did not get where he is by attacking at the wrong time. He eventually stormed off with his entourage.

In the meantime, Saja reported that he was still missing one component. Misaka was saddened, certain that her husband’s death would soon be upon him. Upon hearing this, Calis volunteered the ingredient component which he had in his possession.

Misaka took the ingredients and thanked Saja and made plans to hurry back to the King in Junjeq. Instead, an idea was developed to use the Vessel of Vapors to quickly travel to Junjeq and retrieve the dying king. The Lady of the Mists was willing and the king was brought back to Ashbury where Rasq used his alchemical skills to prepare the antidote. The King was cured and he and his wife immediately returned to Junjeq after thanking all those who helped.

In the meantime, His Grace was once again arguing with Queen Nikwik who, despite her promise upon her last visit to Ashbury, had brought with her some slaves. She of course referred to them as her “servants” and explained that they were well paid, but the slaves basically admitted their condition, although they denied wanted to be freed. One slave pointed out that he had family back home, as an indication perhaps of threats that had been placed upon him. His Grace allowed the Queen to leave with her slaves, for fear of what might happen to the slaves’ families back home if action were to be taken. He did make it perfectly clear however that he would no longer tolerate such behavior in the borders or Ashbury.

Meanwhile, reports from Junjeq contain good and bad news. The King has returned healthy, and in recognition for the work done by his wife and by the Ashbans has instituted some major changes, among them major advances in the rights of women, and stricter laws against slavery. However, he now faces a civil war against his son who still controls much of the military.

Squire Patrick Permanently Killed

Squire Patrick Delair, adopted son of Sir Jaret Delair and squire to former Baron Olin met an untimely death through the evil machinations of a dragon, reportedly the evil monster known as Evergeddon. Squire Patrick was accompanying a merchant caravan on its way to Morgrave, where his adopted father is stationed, when the dragon was spotted swooping in from above. Evergeddon landed atop a wagon and grabbed a young caravan guard, reportedly calling out “Oh Squire-ling, it is time to pay his penalty!”

Squire Patrick immediately stepped forward, demanding that the guard be released, to which the dragon complied — after striking the man down. Evergeddon stepped back, allowing the squire to rush forward and cure the fallen guard, but simply answered every healing spell administered with his dragon’s breath, frustrating Patrick’s attempts to save him. Witnesses report Squire Patrick’s angered outburst to the Dragon as he demanded that the dragon leave the guard out of the matter, and either attack outright or scuttle away as the cowardly newt he really was.

Evergeddon laughed at this, and then seemed to concede to Squire Patrick’s wishes, saying “Enough of this particular game. Let’s play another.” The dragon then offered the Squire the laughable opportunity of winning the chance to save the still dying guard by renouncing his loyalties to his leige-lord and father. Sqiure Patrick stood up slowly, faced the dragon, and said “Well, if those are the only options I have, them I have only one response.” And with that, the highlander lifted his kilt, and called out “Kiss my codpiece, you...” His last words were drowned out by the vile summoning of Dragon Magic as the valiant, if uncautious, the Squire’s spirit was ripped from his body as Evergeddon Obliterated him where he stood. His body fell to the ground, permanently dead.

All of Nordenn mourns the passing of Sqiure Patrick.

Letters

Dear Ashbans:

It saddens me to see how we the Order of the Black Unicorn are treated on the battle field. I have been in the town of Ashbury for some three years now and have noticed the ways in which we are treated among you on the field of battle. Many a times we have been left there to die and fend for ourselves. This has made us into a stronghold among you, but I fear it has jaded you in a way that you think we can handle ourselves in all battles.

Three of the members of the Unicorns where left behind to fend for themselves.  Now I do understand that it is foolish to risk the lives of many for the lives of a few, and I totally agree in the actions that were taken, but what I don’t understand and do not agree with is that when I went back for my friends and safely returned with them only to find ourselves behind enemy lines and to see all of you run even though I shouted many times for help at the top of my lungs. I know you heard me. I know this because Cormack came running and if it weren’t for him I think myself, Ashen, Flayen and Saja would have died. I thank Cormack, I thank Ashen and Flayen and Saja the three I went back for alone by myself and returned with them only to see you flee and leave us there. If not for the combined efforts of all of us we would not have lived for me to be writing about this.

I have seen this in too many battles and to be blunt I am getting very tired of it. Those of you who have helped us know who you are and need not be mentioned, but those of you who have walked over our corpses and not healed us or at least called for a healer should be ashamed of themselves. As for the fleeing when I had yelled for help everyone should be ashamed! We were no more then 50 feet from you, just behind enemy lines ... and you ran! You ran!?! I truly hope that this reaches you and opens your jaded eyes. The Order of the Black Unicorn is strong, but yes there are battles that we ourselves cannot handle.

-- Sparticous

Good People of Icenia:

It was Friday, June 13th, 597, when I was raised from being a Squire of Duchess Mara Tirane Nordenn to the rank of Baron. Soon thereafter, I was brought to Icenia and so began what shall be known in Icenian history as the Age of Warriors. In this age we have fought back armies attacking from every direction, be they Galanthians and Requin’s Maulers from the west, Dur Namarie from the north, Vacarran Corsairs and Thessi from the south, Freejyn from the east, or the Sunless Empire from beneath. We have fought a great war for survival and now find ourselves the cornerstone of a powerful kingdom.

During this journey many of our shining stars have been lost while others have found different paths to follow. To these people I offer my thanks, you have fought the good fight and shall not be forgot as long as my heart still beats. Our time together has made me strong and now I too must follow a new path. As of Sunday, September 3rd, 600, I have taken the position of acting Baron of Nordenn until such time that I, or one of higher rank, names my successor. This new direction does not change my feelings about our Kingdom or its people for I vow to continue to be the Sword that defends Icenia.

Now it is time for a story. Back when I was merely six years old I was introduced to a young gypsy healer with long golden hair. Upon first seeing her I thought that she might be special in some way but I gave it no mind and returned to my work as a hired sword. A few months later I ran into this gypsy again. She knew maybe six spells and yet she was with me in the front lines fighting the evil that is undeath. Since I was with no group at the time she healed me after I was bested by a greater being of chaos. After the battle I found her amongst the crowd and thanked my new friend by offering to buy her a drink in the tavern. From those simple actions grew a bond that withstood many trials that not only gave us strength but also helped us forge this Kingdom that we are a part of today.

I tell you this story not just to share a happy memory but because I no longer see these types of friendships being made. After battles I hear arguments over the searching of kills, the complaints about who was a coward, and the threats of being left to die next time because someone was not thanked. Do we want our Kingdom to lose this war because we citizens cannot play nice? Please, take the time to thank those that stand on the field with you for they are all special. Drink with them and learn why they have chosen the path of the warrior. The bonds that grow from this can be stronger then the grip of the most powerful of dragons.

The last thought I wish to share is the demise of Nordenn. Since becoming Baron I have heard many complaints about the court. First we were thieves, next we were Nordennheim, and soon after we were the barony that was never around. Some of these complaints were deserved but most were caused by people’s inability to treat others as they themselves would want to be treated. If someone is mad, let them be mad. If someone makes a mistake, leave it at that. You have lived in your own shoes and no one else’s so why should you judge how they should act. Is it right to threaten to kill off heroes if they do something you do not like or do not understand?

At one time I was told that townspeople distrusted me because I was stealing kills. After some months I found that the source of this was a warrior who got angry because I searched a creature that we both killed. Until then he never told me himself that he was angry with me and he also left out the part of the story where immediately after searching the creature I gave what I found to him. All because of this, for several months I had to watch my back. It is these misunderstandings that have made me decide to stop leading a court. Maybe one day I shall have the will to deal with it again but today I do not.

May your path be filled with the blood of Icenia’s enemies,

Olin Redbeard Nordenn

Sage's Guild Report:  Hoarding Information?

by Cedric Fruvous

It is with the utmost pride and elation that I report the success of keeping Queen Sidraste Deeanan from taking the Great Sacrifice to be imprisoned within Amora Dun. I thank all the adventurers of Ashbury who defended Guildmistress Shya as we fought our way through Amora Dun. I would especially like to thank now Dame Natasha Roskaya. Her sacrifice makes it possible for us to defeat the forces of Amora Dun, and her bravery will not soon be forgotten.

There is but one more step left to awaken the Battle Queen. Anyone interested in helping or becoming knowledgeable about the situation is encouraged to visit the Sage’s Guild and talk with us about the matter.

I would now like to address a severe untruth being distributed among some of the people in town that we are hoarding information and not distributing it to the citizens.

The Sage’s Guild works hard to gather information for service the duchy and the kingdom. We spend many long hours poring through historical tomes, old newspapers, ancient records, scribing notes and the like. It is a largely thankless job, but we sages enjoy it and try to use our skills to gather information that will be helpful to the kingdom.

When he have the information we are only too happy to share it, and this column in the Ashbury Times helps with this, but we are not going to track down every person in the duchy to tell them what we have discovered. You have to come to us. The Mage’s Guild does not approach you asking if you want to buy scrolls or have a ritual performed, you must go to them. It is no different with us.

At the last gathering, I overheard some people saying that they were unaware of what was going on and what needed to be done and that it was because we weren’t distributing the information we had. This is not only false, but maddening because we have made every effort to keep the people informed, up to and including this column. We are always announcing that people should visit us if they have any questions.

At the beginning of the gathering, after the Etherean left, we announced to everyone in the Dragon’s Flagon that we were holding a meeting to discuss the Amora Dun/Queen Sidraste situation and that all were welcome to attend and ask questions. Three citizens not in the Sage’s Guild actually showed up, and one of them wasn’t even a citizen of our Duchy but was a visitor from another land!

If you are not aware of matter that threaten or pertain to the entire duchy, come and talk to us. But if you are not aware and can’t be bothered to stop by and discuss it, then don’t complain that we aren’t talking to you about it. We do not horde information; we gather it and give it out when people come to the Sage’s Guild and ask about it.

The Sage’s Guild is looking to purchase the following items: An Earth Circle of Power scroll, Investiture Scrolls and components, Earth Regeneration scrolls and components.

The Guild can teach the following skills and offer the following services: Armorsmithing, potion creation, celestial and earth magics, gas globe creation, alchemical books, weapon training, trap disarming and creating skills, and of course historical, archeological, and various other lores.

Mage's Guild Report

There will be a mandatory meeting of all mages in Ashbury at 11 bells on Friday night, the 6th of Fire Ant. We have much to discuss concerning the towers and mirrors and a few minor problems as well. Rasq and Saja, your items have arrived.
Duty sign-ups, as usual, are first-come, first-served. Make sure you have a detect magic in memory or on a scroll when you perform your duty.

New Mage’s Guild symbols will be distributed soon. I am currently negotiating with a dwarven metalsmith to hammer out the details (pun intended) on the finishing touches.

Book Review

by Lady Elena Tir’Intorialian

In an effort to encourage reading and literacy in the populus, I shall be writing a new column dedicated to reviewing books of possible local interest to the population in general. If you would like to submit a book for review in this column, please forward the information to the editor, who will then forward it to me for consideration.

This month’s review is an obscure work, based on an actual life story. This book is the first (and only, as far as I can tell) published work of Gabrielle Blakeney, late daughter of a Baron of Ravenholt. I had the pleasure of meeting with her about a year ago, and can say that the book is written with the same lightness of tone and detail to plot as her spoken conversation.
The remarkable tale starts with the abduction of a young boy by Niman slavers. Although this is a common occurrence, this particular boy managed to shine above all others, eventually escaping and making his own way in the world. I won’t spoil it for you by listing his adventures while enslaved, but they are painted quite clearly with great empathy, and a twist of humor.

Anyone who is interested in slavery will appreciate the trials and troubles of “The Little Slave Boy.” I’m sure your local sage’s guild would be able to tell you where to find a copy of it, and might even rent it to you!

Enjoy!

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

Hello, I’m back again! Once more, not too much to report this month. If you don’t write to me and share your News They Don’t Want You To Know, how can I do my job?!

So let’s get started! Let’s see, what’s going on in Ashbury?

After finally getting the last component needed to make the magic weapon Sparticus so needed,  a heated argument began among the Black Unicorns. Seems that other members of the team believe that they are better fit to wield the weapon. And where were they when the ritual was being done?

A group of Ashbans on patrol in Icenia’s past came upon a spirit form of a cursed barbarian chieftain. The chieftain told the group that his spirit was unable to rest until he was defeated in honor combat...to the resurrection. All three barons present declined the combat, but the dark elven warrior Find'rth T’Varian took up the challenge and sent the chieftain to his final rest.

Lord Roldo of Home was a happy hobling as the sarr argued in Ashbury recently. Seems his arms sales were making him a wealthy man. “Doesn’t trading with slavers and necromancers go against your Code of Chivalry?” Lady Azrael asked him. Lord Roldo reportedly looked at her disapprovingly and said “I know how to separate my personal life from my business!”

Baron Jonathan is having even more trouble with what’s left of his barony. Squire Shya angrily quit when Jonathan made a decision about Queen Sidraste without even consulting her and later on in the gathering, Squire Xavier asked for an extended leave of absence.

Apparently whatever caused Blythedale to fall apart has hit Nordenn too. Sir Du’gaul gave Baron Olin back his estates and left the court, followed by Squire Scarn. (although other reports state that Olin kicked them out — guess we’ll never know for sure.) And before that Dame Azura had jumped ship to the Ash Forest. That leaves the Ash Forest as the only barony with a full court.

A mystic wood elf named Djinn got himself into some hot water recently. He had apparently insulted one of the Shokan. He was soon surrounded by the entire clan who demanded that he bow before them and apologize. I'm told he wisely complied.

Until next month, remember — If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me!
