DUKE ARAMIS PERMANENTLY KILLED BY GALANTRI;
Further Murder Prevents Obtaining Magical Stones Needed to Defeat Annis

by Oliver Nirab

Things had been pretty quiet in Ashbury city for the past few months. However, on the night of the 7th of the Gryphon, all that changed.

Death of the Duke

It began when word came that Sir Eros Clearbrook, the Magistrate of Ashbury, was resurrecting in the Healer’s Guild. Soon, the paladin Sir Morgasander entered town via more mundane means. He reported that he, Sir Eros, Sir Frost, Duke Aramis, and a platoon of the Duke’s Phoenix Guard had marched outside the city to investigate reports that strange black creatures had been seen near the city.

The group was quickly ambushed by the creatures the Ashbans had encountered at the site of the archaeological dig in Trellheim. They were led by the same terrifying black figure encountered there, who was now believed to be Galantri somehow brought back to life and given enchantments by Black Annis, Queen of the Dark Fae.

Duke Aramis ordered Sir Morgasander away to warn Ashbury City. The mysterious knight, reluctantly and under direct orders, obeyed. Sir Eros was slain, as were most of the Phoenix Guard, most of whom resurrected in Safehaven, College, Diron and Conner circles.

Not long after Sir Morgasander had informed the Ashbans of the situation, reports came in that the creatures had breached the defense towers and were marching to the heart of the city. Sir Morgasander led Ashbury’s defenders to meet them.
The creature believed to be Galantri was carrying a ducal tabard, and gloated that he had killed Duke Aramis, who had not yet resurrected. When asked to produce a body, Galantri merely responded, “Fear not, I have it.” When asked to relinquish the tabard, he refused and ordered his forces to attack.

During the battle, pinning, binding and webbing spells seemed to have no effect on Galantri, and weapons—even magical ones— could not harm him. Celestial damage spells were cast into him, but he seemed no worse for wear even after many mages cast enough spells at him to fell far larger creatures. A quick thinking Luigi cast a Disarm spell at the figure, forcing him to drop the tabard.

Galantri’s forces were defeated, and Galantri himself eventually left, stating boredom rather than Ashban attacks as the reason.
Sir Morgasander, the next ranking noble in the city at the time, called for the adventurers to convene in the Dragon’s Flagon. Once there many speculated that His Grace may have resurrected elsewhere or regenerated on the field of battle. Sir Morgasander rejected both though, stating that if Duke Aramis had chosen to resurrect, it would be in the city to address his people, and that regenerating on the field of battle would be foolish considering the amount of enemies present.

(The next day, Sir Morgasander and Sir Eros announced that spies had seen Duke Aramis’ permanently dead body though had been unable to recover it. They called for the town to gather in a small clearing in the woods and have a service for His Grace. Many adventurers including Gilwing the dwarf, Glorianna Wyndancer, Sparticus of the Black Unicorns, Lord Tiburon of Phage, a visibly shaken Shya Corak, Lady Dara Vardik, and many others spoke a few words of remembrance for Duke Aramis. The Ashbans burned the tabard and gave three huzzahs for the Duke.)

The Rhi-Artan

At the meeting in the Flagon, Sir Morgasander then explained that he had gotten word of seven stones that, when joined, held vast power. It is believed that this was what the Galanthians were looking for in Trellheim. He then called on Yelanus Veler, a native Galanthian who has sided with Icenia in the conflict. Yelanus explained that the stones were called the Rhi-Artan, and that the last time all were held at the same time was when Galantri cursed Icenia, Lempur and the Vacarran pirates. He further stated that legend said that the Rhi-Artan could not be taken by force or stolen, but rather must be given freely.

Not long after this, three strange men—later identified as members of the King’s Order of the Unlidded Eye—entered the tavern and asked to speak privately with Sir Morgasander and with only those the knight felt were necessary and trustworthy. Sir Morgasander asked the Ashbans to leave, with the exceptions of Ragnar representing the Barony of Nordenn, Squire Auric representing the Ash Forest, Star representing Blythedale, Guildmistress Shya Corak of the Healer’s Guild, Cedric Fruvous of the Sage’s Guild, Assistant Guildmaster Saja of the Mage’s Guild, and Yelanus, for his knowledge of Galanthians.

Those who left the tavern were soon met by mysterious people who spoke in low tones and urged those who would listen that they would earn great rewards if they found the stones and turned them over to the Galanthians instead of the “corrupt nobles of Ashbury.” It is hoped none took them up on these offers.

What was said inside is unknown, but when people emerged from the tavern, they reiterated the need to find the Rhi-Artan.

The Planar Carnival

Soon after, people from the Planar Carnival began to enter town, selling tickets for the main show and generally attempting to be amusing. The ringleader announced that ticket holders also had the chance to win a strange stone that had magical properties. With this he held up a piece of the Rhi-Artan. Needless to say, nearly every Ashban present bought a ticket.

The next day, the tickets sold by the Planar Carnival began to randomly rift people out of town. One such group appeared in a small building and had their fortune told by a strange man. He foretold that there would be some kind of tear or rip that would have to be closed that night. All were rifted back to town safely.

Other people from the Planar Carnival continued to enter town at various points in the day. One of the carnival’s games involved directing a goblin to acquire items, including a magical dagger, from inside a Circle of Power. Evidently the game was either extremely difficult or rigged. Either way, some unidentified individuals were so angered by this that they slew the proprietor and stole the items. Sir Eros immediately launched a full investigation, and the carnival threatened to leave town, with their piece of the Rhi-Artan, if the criminals were not punished and the items returned.

The proprietor resurrected, but had apparently been given an Amnesia elixir, so could offer no testimony. The goblin did not have the intellect to comprehend what happened or to give testimony. Given the skills and equipment needed to pull off this crime, the magistrate felt that the perpetrators were adventurers. “Galanthains and gnolls wouldn’t care if we knew they had stolen the item and would not have used an Amnesia,” he stated when some offered these possible suspects to the murder.
Sir Eros began a search of the homes of the area, starting with the building where the Ash Forest was staying, but gave up his search after two homes. “Whoever has this has hidden it well by now,” he said.

The ringleader of the carnival entered town the next day  demanding to hear the status of the case. Unfortunately, Sir Eros had been unable to identify the assailants and thus was unable to give anything to the ringleader. Sir Eros beseeched the ringleader to give Ashbury another chance, and not to judge all by the actions of the few.

His words seemed to have some effect, and the ringleader announced that if the items were returned, even anonymously, that they would consider staying and continuing with the carnival. Unfortunately, and not surprisingly, the criminals never came forward and the items were not returned.

Fighting Galanthia

Meanwhile, a man named Silva entered town. He claimed to be an agent of the Lady of the Mists, and decried a purple and silver cat woman (but not a sarr) as an agent of Black Annis. The both expressed knowledge of the Rhi-Artan, but the intentions of both remained unknown. Both did reveal that they were fae, and expressed that fae could take pieces of the Rhi-Artan by force.

Later in the evening, Sir Eros announced after conferring with adventurers who had done some research into the situation that there was a “tear” in the fabric of space and time that was the source of what was powering Galantri.  Some believed that a Circle of Power around this tear could leave Galantri vulnerable. However, no one knew where the tear was.
Earlier, however, a mystic wood elf boy named Flynn had discovered a rock with the words “scream your spirit to the stars” written on it.

Thinking it a piece of the Rhi-Artan, he presented it to the Mage’s Guild and Sir Eros. Sir Eros was shocked to recognize the handwriting of Duke Aramis. It was conjectured that he was somehow able, perhaps with the aid of the Lady of the Mists, to give this last message to his people.

A small group consisting of Sir Eros, Saja, Kiren and Cormack of the Black Unicorns, and Cedric Fruvous were the only ones present at this revelation. All gathered and looked up to the stars. Feeling foolish, they yelled Duke Aramis’ name to the night sky, but to no effect. They then reached down within themselves to scream to the sky with all their beings. Suddenly, a comet streaked across the sky and stopped in mid air. Taking this to be a sign of where to go, they gathered the adventurers of Ashbury and followed the comet until they were directly under it.

Here they found what seemed to be a black tear standing alone in midair. Galantri was there waiting, and after saying “I knew you would be here—one of your members has betrayed you!” he led his strange black creatures against the Ashbans.
The adventurers of Ashbury surged forward but could make no headway against Galantri and his creatures. The tear stood behind the line of creatures and none could approach.

Sir Eros however crawled through the underbrush and ran in from behind, fought off the attacks of the few creatures who remained guarding the tear, and raised a Circle of Power around the tear. He remained inside the Circle despite his lack of knowledge of the effects it could have on him.

As the battle raged, the tear began to slowly close. Once fully sealed, Galantri screamed in pain and was susceptible to physical attacks and spells. He was quickly defeated.

When the adventurers returned to Ashbury City, however, they found a huge symbol of Galantri in the middle of town. Many tests were performed on it, and though it was clearly magical, its purpose could not be determined.

The next day, a Galanthian man came into town, apparently with the orders to kill Star or else the man’s family would be slain. He was torn because he did not wish to kill the adventurer, but did not wish for his family to be harmed. Soon a large force of Galanthians attacked the city in force, seeking to slay Star, who held the spirit of the Emperor Galanthys IV of Galanthia (see previous issues of Ashbury Times for details) as well as Sir Eros for sealing the rift that powered Galantri.

Star, concerned over the man’s family, offered to let the man kill him, despite loud objections from other Ashbans. But Star was adamant, claiming he could not let the woman die because of him. Glorianna Wyndancer removed the problem, however, by grabbing both Star and the assassin, and vanishing with both. It was later conjectured that she used a magic item known as The Graveyard Key. None of the three have been heard from since.

The Galanthians then turned their attention to killing Sir Eros, but the Ashbans defended them. The fighting was incredibly fierce, resulting in the resurrection of an adventurer named Garron and an elf named Glorfendale.

The Treachery of the Fey

Later in the day, Silva returned holding the Rhi-Artan that the ringleader of the Planar Carnival had once held. He had obviously slain the man, and taken the stone for Black Annis. The Ashbans attacked him, but he escaped. Apparently he had been a servant of Black Annis all along, and had duped many Ashbans.

Soon after Silva’s departure, members of the carnival arrived in town with the permanently dead body of the ringmaster, berating the Ashbans for allowing it to happen and angry that two of their number were slain.
By this time the criminals had abandoned the magic dagger stolen from the carnival, and it was recovered. The dagger was left in the Galanthian circle, as if to make people believe the Galanthians had stolen it. Sir Eros gave it to the carnival people, but it did very little to alleviate their ill feelings.

Sir Eros is still attempting to determine who stole the items and killed the carny, and has promised rewards for information.

Galantri Reborn?

On that Sunday afternoon, an unconscious man rifted into the symbol of Galantri. He was well dressed, and had the symbol of Galantri on his face. He appeared to be a total amnesiac, and was very confused. The man left town unmolested.

Though there are few concrete answers to who he is, Cedric Fruvous of the Ashbury Sage’s Guild believes that the man is Galantri himself. “Black Annis was powering him through the rift, and we closed it,” the scholar said. “Which means that it is very likely that he was returned to the form he was in before Annis got a hold of him. Why he appeared in Ashbury instead of Galanthia though, and why he has no memory, I have no answer for.”

Children Missing

First it was the orphans who were missing, but now all children throughout the duchy have disappeared! No one knows for sure what happened to the children. Some sages who speculated about the missing orphans joining a thieves’ gang have now retracted their initial ideas and have subscribed to the “monster under the bed” theory. Still others, such as Headmaster Shmelling at the orphanage in Safehaven, believe this to be the work of the Boogeyman and his booglings, bizarre creatures from Mythylandria, the realm of dreams and nightmares.
Whoever is right, all of our children are missing now!

Sleep Spells Gone

Mages around the duchy are shocked and astonished to find that Sleep spells no longer work. It was believed to have happened around the evening of the tenth of this month. Some scholars have speculated that it has something to do with the disappearance of the magic mirror from the Ashbury Mage’s Guild. Apparently, when the theft took place, a creature known as Mirrorscrew assaulted all in the building with a massive unavoidable Sleep spell.

Ducal Guildmaster Tiriflorn had this to say: “My mages are working around the bells to try to restore Sleep spells to the land. Remember when Shatter spells wouldn’t work? We fixed it. Remember when Magic Storms wouldn’t work? We fixed it! Give my people a few more weeks and I guarantee we’ll fix this too!” Despite Guildmaster Tiriflorn’s optimism, mages around the land are distressed at these events.

Sage's Guild Report

By Cedric Fruvous

In every estate the lord of the land can dispense justice, as can his chosen magistrate (though the lord can always overrule his magistrate.) In a barony the lord and his magistrate would have authority over each estate in the barony, the duke and his magistrate throughout the duchy, and the king and the royal magistrate throughout the entire kingdom.

For example, if a crime were committed in Amaranth, Blythedale the following people would be allowed to dispense justice (in order from lowest rank to highest): The magistrate of Amaranth, the Lord of Amaranth, Blythedale’s baronial magistrate, baron/baroness of Blythedale (Baroness Talin), Ducal Magistrate (Sir Eros), The Duke of Ashbury, the royal magistrate, and final authority with rest with the King Gareth or Queen Sidraste.

In the capital city the authority would begin with Sir Eros (the ducal magistrate) and go up to the king or queen.

In most situations a magistrate will hear trials and dispense justice if his/her lord is either out of the land on business, or too busy to hear the trial, though lords can hear trials if they decide to. Most times, lieges do not get involved in a trial unless it is a major case. In the example above, the magistrate or lord of Amaranth, or even the baronial magistrate hearing the case would not be unusual, but for Baroness Talin, or anyone above her rank to get involved would only likely happen if the crime were particularly heinous or important.

Town guards do not have the authority to try people, only to arrest criminals and bring them to the magistrate for trial (this of course includes the captain of the town guard as well, whose only difference in job from that of a regular guard is to organize and lead the other guards.)

Commoners too can apprehend criminals, using force if necessary, but only enough force to subdue the offenders. Once subdued the commoners must legally bring the criminals to the magistrate or lord of the land for justice.

Though honor combat is not a legal means of determining guilt or innocence, a victim of a crime may wish to challenge the offender to alleviate a bruised ego, or for other personal reasons. This is allowed, though not part of the legal process itself (and of course for the duel to be legal two people of the rank of town guard or higher must be present.)

Sometimes a lord will allow his squire to hear a case and decide the verdict in order to test the squire’s skills, education, and judgment. This, however, does not mean that the squire always has the authority to hear cases and decide a verdict. In such situations the authority used is that of the lord, not the squire. A squire can only hear a case if specifically told to do so by the lord, and even then the lord is usually nearby to ensure that a poor choice on the squire’s part can be corrected before the trial is complete.

The bottom line is this: if someone commits a crime in Ashbury City, the only people that can hear the case and decide judgment are Sir Eros, the duke of Ashbury, or a royal magistrate. The likelihood of King Gareth or Queen Sidraste being in town and willing to take the time out of their busy schedules hear a case is remote at best, but they too have the authority.

I hope that helps to clarify matters.

Mage's Guild Report

by Saja

On a recent Friday evening while I was doing Guild business, the Guild’s mirror was stolen by an elf who called himself Mirrorscrew. For those of you who are unaware of the mirror’s function, it allows communication and instant transport between other guilds in the Duchy. Any information regarding this matter will be rewarded.

The Guild would like to congratulate Star on being reinstated to Guildsman status. He has proven himself to be an excellent caster and will be a great addition to the Guild.

Currently the Mage’s Guild does not have set hours due to lack of guildsmen invested in the Circle of Power. It is open most days and on weekends it usually will be open on Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon, and the hours will be announced during those days. The Mage’s Guild does not do favors by opening its doors for individual requests and personally I do not like to travel to the Guild ten times a day.

As always, the Mage’s Guild is looking to buy Celestial ritual scrolls and components. If you wish to have a ritual or a ward cast you must notify the Guild ahead of time.

Letters

To the people of Ashbury,

In my travels in your lands, I have not been oblivious to the aspersions cast upon my house by citizens of Ashbury regarding our unwillingness to aid the Ashbans. It seems many expect us to act as “Heroes of Ashbury” and aid any and all that appear in need. But my house and my nation’s resources and business are our own, and we do with them as we please. The safety and security of the Nation of Tarzaterranzan is our honor and duty, and our allegience and obedience are owed only to our prince.

Perhaps instead of worrying about what a group of foreign visitors is doing, you should look inside your own borders and worry about what your own people do. Never have I seen such a display of criminal behavior and callous disregard for the good of a people than I have this past gathering. Because one or more of your own is full of greed and disregard for the lives of their fellows, Galantri may win and destroy your lands. How can you expect visitors to your lands to put their lives and honor on the line for Ashbury when your own people fight against you? Your entire country is put at risk and an innocent citizen is killed over a few magic trinkets and a few gold. And no one comes forward to assuage their own honor over this cowardly act, even though doing so may well lead to the defeat of Galantri. But it seems honor means little to some of your citizens.

So the next time my House stands apart from the “Heroes of Ashbury” or does not come running to assist in a battle, do not cast aspersions and dirty looks our way. Perhaps when your people can work together and are not mere puppets of greed and crime, my people will be more apt to help. Until that time, our aid will go where we see fit, not to Ashbury as a whole.

A small infection will take over the entire body if not properly treated and cut out. Your small infection is growing.

Lord Find’rth T’Varian
House Ryujima
Nation of Tarzaterranzan

People of Ashbury,

Our duchy is plagued by crime. His majesty, King Gareth, is appalled at our behavior in these troubling times.

The nobles of the other lands of Icenia frown every time Ashbury is mentioned. They can not believe how we have let crime go unchecked for so long. Not only do we have organized crime running rampant, but we also have murderers and thugs among our adventuring community.

The speech I made at His Grace’s memorium was in vain if you continue to disrespect all that he stood for. If I find those responsible for committing murder, I will put them to the sword myself. No longer will they be harbored by injustice.

Prepare to be judged!

Sir Morgasander
Royal Paladin

To the Greedy, Selfish Person(s) who Robbed the Planar Carnival,

I hope that you are very pleased with yourselves. Because of your actions, the carnival left town before we could acquire their piece of the Rhi-Artan, and now it is in the hands of Black Annis.

Your petty actions may have doomed us all. Even when the ring leader said he would forgo legal actions if the items were returned anonymously, you still chose your own personal greed over the good of the duchy and kept your few trinkets. I hope you enjoy them, for they have very likely been bought with the blood of Ashbans, which will very likely be shed in the near future.

Whoever you are, you are not fit to call yourself a citizen of Ashbury, and I sincerely hope that you are repaid in kind for your selfishness and greed.

With Anger and Disappointment,

Cedric Fruvous

To all people of Ashbury,

We have lost someone who was dear to us, who we loved, who we enjoyed to be around. Not only have we lost this person, but the entire world has lost this person. The world along with us, will no longer be able be pleased by seeing this man we so lost.

Duke Aramis Llyrr has been slain in battle, I am sure he did not go down easily! I’ve had the honor to fight along side of him, to protect him in battle as best I can! I would have died for him.

In life there are Heroes and there are Legends, the difference between the two is a Hero is never forgotten, but a Legend never dies!

Duke Aramis Llyrr was by far a Legend in my eyes, and I am sure in the eyes of many others!

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

It is difficult to be flippant and funny about local gossip during this time of mourning, but I believe it is important for us to continue to live our lives to the fullest to tell those who would try to destroy our way of life that they can set us back, but we will rise even higher. The Galanthians may be dancing in the street now since they have killed our beloved Duke Aramis, but they cannot kill our spirit. United we shall survive.

Of course, the biggest issue that the court insiders whisper about these days is: Who will  be the new Duke or Duchess? Baron Agnar is currently the highest ranking noble in Ashbury so his name has been mentioned, but despite his heroics on the battlefield, many feel that his association with criminals has made him an unlikely replacement. Sir Morgasander is another logical choice, since he is a Royal Paladin stationed here. Sir Olin, now a knight to the Queen, is a strong possibility, and other Ashbans whose names have popped up include Sir Eros and Dame Glen. Then again, His Majesty King Gareth might appoint a noble from other parts of Icenia—Dame Beatrice, Sir Emery, and Sir Nevis for instance all have estates in Ashbury and could be easily chosen, though none have spent much time here.

Then again, the necromancer Alaric Dragonhart is probably still out there somewhere, planning his triumphant return. Hmph.

Speaking of Sir Eros, a young Mystic Wood Elf child named Flynn entered town recently and asked Sir Eros to teach him about girls. The magistrate put a fatherly arm around the boy and said “Much of the fun about girls is learning for yourself, but I will tell you this: Love between two people is a beautiful thing. Between three, it’s fantastic.”

Eros placed Squire Auric of the Ash Forest in charge of the investigation into who killed the carny game operator, and later was overheard asking Auric if he had found anything out yet. When Auric replied he hadn’t, Eros replied snidely “Why am I not surprised?” Witnesses also have reported that Eros refused to heal members of the Ash Forest, saying he had no spells left, yet he healed Guildmistress Shya a few minutes later.

Members of the Sage’s Guild are apparently quitting left and right because Guildmistress Zatarina refuses to back down from her statements against the Ash Forest court. These unnamed members are worried about retribution and feel that if they stay, they will be targets. Cedric and Jacquari are apparently brave enough (or stupid enough) to stay.

Don’t bump into Jessamy Vorik  or he might drop the cards he is using to help him once again regain his memory. Something strange is going on here. Here is a typical conversation: Alyssa: “Hello, Jessamy, how are you feeling today?” Jessamy: “Fine. Wait, do I know you?”

Sparticous has been seen talking to the skulls that are adorned on his armor. He says that the skulls can communicate with him. They are said to be the skulls of a man and woman of his past. A very small man and woman apparently.

“I’ve encountered horrible things in my time,” said Ranger-in-Training Scarn recently. “Vampires, liches, minions... but there is one thing that just frightens me more than anything —clowns.” Guess he wasn’t a fan of the carnival.

A dragon in mostly human form walked through town recently and asked for Cormack. I’ve never seen adventurers back away so quickly. Cormack and the dragon apparently were friends from years ago when Cormack helped the dragon fight against the undead Baracus Kul. The dragon took back the weapon he had given to Cormack, who didn’t object. Well, would you?

Congratulations to the winners of Tallbrow’s latest competition. In alphenetical order: Art: Luigi (for a wonderful small piece of sculpture); Baking: Tiberon (for a delicious sausage and garlic pie); Clothing: Glorianna (for an exquisite dress); Jewelry: Glorianna (another beautiful small piece); Smithing: a tie between Tithonia (whose leather armor was most impressive) and Llyweilun  (whose many furs each told a story); Performance: Llyweilun (for a hilarious and bawdy song); Poetry: a tie between Star (for a poem about a lost love) and Diego (whose poem about his missing children brought tears to the crowd’s eyes). By the way, this Diego is not the same person as the gypsy.

Speaking of gypsies, here is a quote overheard from Zymm recently: “How many people do I have to curse before people stop thinking I'm human?” while motioning to his purple doublet, blue shirt, purple feathered hat, black shiny pants, and thigh-high leather boots.

That’s all for this issue. Remember—if you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me!
