Penthantos’ Gaffe Stopped, Elementals Appear

by Oliver Nirab

Late one Friday night in the early days of September, a soldier from the recently reconquered estate of Deathwatch entered the capital city. The soldier identified himself as Private Loren and reported that a fire raining cloud had swept through Deathwatch and was headed towards the city. No permanent deaths were reported in Deathwatch.

Private Loren was immediately taken to Sage’s Guildmaster Cedric Fruvous. As was recounted in the last Ashbury Times, Guildmaster Cedric had determined how to stop the cloud, but was unable to locate it. Upon interviewing Private Loren, Cedric immediately put out the call for Ice Storm spells and scrolls, ten of which would be needed to stop the cloud. Only Cedric and Guardsman Osrick had memorized any Ice Storm spells, but Luigie of the Black Forest provided a large stack of Ice Storm scrolls.

In short order, the cloud entered the city, raining destruction upon the assembled adventurers. Cedric and Osrick immediately began casting into the center of the cloud, attempting to dodge the raining fire as they cast. Many times they were struck by the raining fire, but each time were quickly healed, mostly by Lord Jonathan Dragonhart Vardik of the Ash Forest and Lauroc DerWyvernhaus of the Healer’s Guild.

As the Ice Storms were poured into it, the cloud got slower and seemed to crystallize. Once ten had struck it, Lord Jonathan cast the required Death spell into it and the cloud crashed to the ground and began to dissipate. Aided by Koshi and Lyle, Cedric was able to force the cloud into a specially prepared bottle that will hold the cloud for one hundred years.

As soon as the last of the Gaffe’s essence was forced into the cloud however, a huge burst of Celestial energy seemed to emanate from the exact location where the cloud had been. Both of the biata present, Lord Jonathan and Healer’s Guildmistress Shya Corak, immediately fell unconscious. When they awoke, they found that their feathers had fallen out, and their claws had receded to look like normal hands.

Further, it was shortly discovered that all potions had stopped functioning and that all evocation magic was far more powerful than normal.

Many began to advocate that Cedric release the Gaffe, but the wizard refused. “Icenian mages have been bottling this thing for years. There is no record of anything like this ever happening before,” he told the assembled adventurers.

Shortly, it was noticed that a huge stone ziggeraut had appeared in the middle of the city. As the adventurers took notice of it, elementals of all four foundations (ice, fire, stone and water) poured out of it and attacked.

As the adventurers fought, Shya and Lord Jonathan were drawn to the ziggurat and inside they found several beings. The beings appeared dressed as gypsies, humans and barbarians, but they seemed to exhibit abilities of biata. It was quickly theorized that they were pre-Celestial Change biata.

The assembled Ashbans eventually defeated the elementals, and it was discovered that each corner of the ziggurat had a symbol of one of the four elements on it.

Throughout the next few days, many mixed groups including members of the Baronial Court of the Ash Forest and the Black Forest traveled to four distinct ziggurats which each represented one of the four elements.

The Black Forest traveled to the fifth and final ziggurat and there they fought many different elemental beings. The leader of the elemental beings seemed to know the pre-celestial biata and stated that they had interfered in his plans for the last time.

The Black Forest, realizing they were outnumbered, called for help and began to fight the creatures in an attempt to hold them until help arrived. By the time the other adventurers arrived though, they had slain all the elementals present.

As this occurred all the celestial energy that had been spread throughout the area swarmed into the leader and he rifted away. When that happened, potions began to work again, spells all functioned normally and the biata could feel their feathers and claws beginning to return. All of the ziggurats seem to have crumbled to dust.

The newly discovered biata left town unmolested. Their existence on Tar’ Navarria is a mystery however, as it was believed that the only biata here had come from Tyrra with the rest of Ashbury.

In light of this new evidence, some theorize that there was never a Great Celestial Change on Tar’ Navarria to cause the appearance of the biata to change as there was on Tyrra, and that the biata of Tar’Navarria had lost their identities along the way.

It is hoped that more answers will be forthcoming soon.

New Galanthian Leader Visits Ashbury

by Oliver Nirab

In the early days of September, a troop of Galanthian soldiers arrived in Ashbury City. Their leader claimed to be Glantri reborn, though he bears no resemblance to the Glantri who came to Ashbury two years ago and was, until recently, a squire to Baron Morgasander.

This new figure, since dubbed “New Glantri” announced that it was he who is chosen by the Devorra to be the new Emperor of Galanthia, and that the other Glantri was a pretender. He also announced that he wished to speak with Duke Frost, and was told that His Grace was holding an open forum the next morning.

The next day the new Glantri arrived at the forum and seemed to appeal to Duke Frost for aid in his bid to lead Galanthia. He claimed to want to do away with necromancy and slavery in Galanthia, and to foster a close relationship with Ashbury. The assembled nobles seemed skeptical.

When questioned about the ex-squire Glantri, the new Glantri claimed that sometimes a person with enough charisma or power, or both, can trick the Devorra into believing that they are the true reincarnate of Glantri. He made sure to assure His Grace he was the real thing.

Duke Frost listened carefully to New Glantri and announced that as far as he could see, New Glantri was simply another faction fighting for control of Galanthia, and that he would not aid any of the factions. New Glantri asked permission to remain in Ashbury for diplomatic purposes, and this was allowed.

New Glantri also requested that the former dark fey known as Silva be turned over to him for punishment. His Grace explained that Silva was already punished for his crimes against Ashbury and that since there is no extradition treaty with Galanthia, Ashbury would not turn Silva over. Duke Frost further warned that if New Glantri or any of his men assaulted Silva, it would be they who would be arrested and punished accordingly.

After his meeting with Duke Frost, New Glantri talked for some time with a few of the local adventurers and then went on his way.

Later that night, Silva warily came to town. He was only willing to stay near the outskirts, because he feared being the target of revenge-motivated attacks from the adventurers of Ashbury.

He spoke for some time to Nicholas Couerfroid and Percival Sweetwater. While they were speaking, the New Glantri and a group of his soldiers came upon the trio. New Glantri ordered his men to leave Silva alone, but they ignored his orders and charged after the former fey.

A brief melee broke out. When all was done, two Galanthians lay dead, Silva had fled into the wilderness, and Nicholas and Percival fled back to town.

Nicholas, who had slain one of the Galanthians, turned himself over to Sir Eros for judgment. The Lord Magistrate, however, deemed it a case of self-defense and released Nicholas.

The next day, a student from the Bardic College came to the Sage’s Guild to report a cave that had a strange black mist within it, and a troop of Galanthians guarding it.

She was directed to report this to the nobility and Sir Du’Gaul and Lord Jonathan marshalled the Ashbans present and went to investigate.

When they arrived, they found that New Glantri was trying to enter the cave, but that the mist was blocking him.

At first, it was suspected that the mist was the Crix in an inert state, but reports placed the Crix in Galanthia at that time. Further, there was never any report of the Crix being inert.

The nobility pondered what to do and seemed to decide that aiding Glantri to get into the cave was probably not in the best interests of Ashbury. Gilwing of the Black Forest was tried to use the dwarven Ring of Palin to seal the cave, but it did not work.

Sir Du’Gaul and Lord Jonathan were about to order New Glantri and his men to leave the area so that it could be secured when the vampire Matros Feratu Lochaber led a force of undead and Galanthians onto the scene and began berating the Ashbans for listening to “false prophets.”

He demanded they turn New Glantri over to him, and in exchange he would take his troops and leave peacefully.

New Glantri and his men immediately attacked Lochaber, aided by the Ashbans. The vampire quickly struck New Glantri with many death spells, and slew him.

It was noted that New Glantri’s body immediately dissipated, instead of clinging to life for five minutes as most humanoids do.

Throughout the fight, Lochaber was able to control some of New Glantri’s troops and use them to attack the Ashbans.

After a long and difficult fight, Sir Du’Gaul was able to prison Lochaber. Since no one had a Stake of Woe or some other means to slay him, a killing blow was administered and the vampire turned into a dark mist which quickly dissipated.

It is unknown what affect these events will have on the already tenuous relations between Ashbury and Galanthia.

Sil-Galad Attacks Ashbury Again

Late one Saturday evening, an Amani Ranger entered the city asking to speak with any nobles of the Ash Forest. In short order he was taken to Sir Du’Gaul Mornavor and Lord Jonathan Dragonhart Vardik. He explained to them that the rangers had found Sil-Galad’s crypt nearby and that it was hoped the Court of the Ash Forest and the more prominent local elves could investigate it. Sir Du’Gaul immediately assembled a team.

Although elves were preferred given the nature of the mission, Sir Du’Gaul and Cedric Fruvous were the only local elves in town at the time. To round out the group Paythin and Sparticous of the Black Unicorns and Lauroc DerWyvernhaus of the Healer’s Guild also went to help.

They were shown to the crypt, but found a huge stone blocking the entrance. Using Endow scrolls, Sparticous and Sir Du’Gaul were able to push it aside and enter. Within they found Sil-Galad prone upon a stone slab with many of the creatures of darkness surrounding him and taunting him.

The adventurers attempted to parlay with the dark creatures, but were ignored. Left with no clear alternative, they attacked the dark creatures. A Light spell cast by Lord Jonathan immediately destroyed one of the creatures. After the creatures were dispatched, the party stepped forward and spoke with Sil-Galad.

The unfortunate elven lord explained that when he was laid to rest his spirit did not depart for the Elder Wood as it should have. He didn’t know why, perhaps the tomb was improperly constructed or built upon cursed land. His spirit was trapped within the tomb and forced to experience nothing but darkness and solitude.

He came to hate the darkness and curse it, drawing the ire of Lord Tenebrous, an elemental lord of darkness. In response Tenebrous cursed Sil-Galad to destroy all things elven and to be constantly taunted by the creatures of darkness. No matter how many of the creatures Sil-Galad slays, more always come.

Sil-Galad told the adventurers he can partially control the urge to destroy elves and all things elven for a short time while within his crypt, but that it is very difficult. He stated that such restraint was impossible when not in his crypt.

With that, he began to clutch his head and warned Sir Du’Gaul’s party to flee. As they did they heard Sil-Galad summon an elven pantherghast. Sil-Galad and the pantherghast followed the party out of the crypt, and more creatures of darkness swarmed out of the shadows to join the pursuit.

Realizing that this was not a winnable fight at their current numbers, Sir Du’Gaul ordered the party to return to Ashbury to rally the populace. To their lament, when they arrived in the city, they found it nearly empty of adventurers.

The few adventurers and visitors who were around were no match for the vast array of creatures. As a result, Lord Jonathan ordered the town to their Wards and circles.

In short order Sil-Galad himself found his way to the Ash Forest manor house and destroyed their Ward. The only inhabitants were Sir Du’Gaul, Lord Jonathan, Paythin, and Cedric. Sil-Galad and the darkness creatures bested the warriors, and Cedric cast a Prison on himself to avoid a similar fate. When the elven mummy dispelled the prison, Cedric quickly cast a second one upon himself.

Unable to slay Cedric, Sil-Galad administered a killing blow to Sir Du’Gaul and dragged him off after tearing apart the Manor house. Once the darkness creatures left, Cedric healed Lord Jonathan and Paythin and retrieved Sir Du’Gaul and lifed him.

As Du’Gaul and Cedric were the only elves about, both hid until more of Ashbury’s adventurers returned. Before this happened however, Sil-Galad left, announcing his intention to find other elves to slay.

During the assault many adventurers called his name, in the hopes it would defeat him as it did during his last attack. Unfortunately, it did not work this time.

Freejyn Horde Returns

The Freejyn Horde, thought gone forever after sinking into the ground en masse during a battle two years ago in Queensboro, seem to have returned.

While the elemental crisis was occurring in Ashbury (see related article), the Freejyn Horde attacked the town. They were as bloodthirsty and vicious as ever, but now they seemed to be enhanced by some unknown elemental abilities, and they were able to hurl elemental blasts from their fingertips.

The Horde has apparantly risen from the Plains of Rage anew to strike terror into the populance. A man living on the Plains of Rage said “I once lived my life under the fear of the Red Rage, but on that fateful day they all sank into the earth, my heart rejoiced. I was there that day, and watched them all sink and I return to that spot thrice each year to give thanks to the ground that swallowed them up, once for each sibling I have lost, on each of their birthdays. Yesterday was Little Kimmy’s birthday and so I returned there and an awful sight greeted my eyes: the return of the Freejyn Horde! They rose up from the ground, clawing out of the earth, digging each other out of the ground that had swallowed them. But now, somehow changed, many of them were glowing with elemental power ... lightning, flame, ice and stone.”

A huge force of them attacked the city. The first few attacks were repelled, but subsequent attacks scattered the Ashbans to their Wards and Circles.

From there, the Ash Forest and the Black Forest were able to pick off the Freejyns in small numbers until they were all defeated.

There were several resurrections including Sparticous of the Black Unicorns, Sareth El’ Noray, Koshinara, Noldrik and Kerak.

Apparently, this new Horde attacked the city of Ashbury and gave no reason other than that they were searching for “The One.” It is unknown if the Freejyn were temporarily returned due to the ziggurats or if they are now back for good.

New Troubles in the Abysmal Gorge

by Talis Makolin

Early one Friday, a terrified child and her mother came to Ashbury seeking help. They explained that, strange as it may seem, the girl’s nightmare had become reality and was stalking her. They were directed to the Healer’s Guild where Guildmistress Shya examined her and determined that the problem was emotional based and not memory based. As there were no stone elves in town, Shya made arrangements for the girl and her mother to visit the village of stone elves in Waterwood.

Before the two left however, a strange figure entered town. It had a hideous, twisted visage and wild orange hair. It spoke to no one, and began searching the city, walking through people, walls, Wards, and Circles of Power. No attack, whether weapon or spell based, could harm it.

Soon it came across the little girl, who was utterly terrified of it. The Ashbans were able to hide the girl from the creature and it eventually left.

In what appears to be a related incident, the Candyman, the current Lord of both Halloween and Nightmares, came to Ashbury. He warned the adventurers that Sugarcane, the Candyman’s evil alter ego, had returned. As if that wasn’t disturbing enough, Sugarcane is apparently searching for the Forge of Malice, which allows the user to destroy the one thing they hate the most.

There is no information on what the Forge of Malice is or what it even looks like, but it is believed that if Sugarcane finds information on it before the Ashbans do, that he will use it to destroy the Candyman.

As many Ashbans are aware, having the Candyman as the King of Halloween is the safest of unsafe choice.

Cause of Plague Discovered

The plague that was afflicting the people of Ashbury recently reached a head. Many of the afflicted townspeople came into town exhibiting signs of being undead, however they had a metabolism and were not harmed by healing spells.

As many as possible were subdued and secured in the newly built jail, which made things a bit difficult for Sheriff Harrison.

Many of the details are being withheld by the nobility for security reasons, but apparently it was discovered that the Brotherhood, the necromancers who supply necromantic arms and goods to Glenrake and Mooregrave, created the plague.

It was reported that this act was revenge because Ashbury destroyed the Manual of the Founders that was discovered last spring

Apparently the plague causes many people who work with the land to grow sick, and then believe that they are undead.

The final stage causes the afflicted to actually become undead, wreaking untold havoc upon the populace.

Reports from the area are that no people seem to be contracting the plague anymore. Those that were sick are becoming well, and those who reached the undead palor stage of the plague reverted to thier normal states in a day or two, having no memory of what transpired during that stage.

Unseelie Fey Lord Visits Ashbury

On a recent afternoon, a strange looking creature calling himself Lord Faust rifted into the center of Ashbury City. Faust appeared as a large humanoid with purple hair and lips, black bat wings and horns upon his head. He spoke to many of the adventurers of Ashbury and declared that he was indeed the new Lord of the Unseelie Court. He claimed the dark fey known as Black Annis is gone permanently. This was later corroborated by a wild fey.

Several adventurers were hired to retrieve Faust’s “horse” for him, as it was stolen by a wild fey and brought to an area of Faerie he couldn’t enter. Sir Du’gaul, Lord Jonathan, Sparticous, Greyesmere and several others were rifted out and later returned back with Lord Faust. What happened on their little trip is mostly unknown, but they chatted with Lord Faust for quite some time afterwards and he left the city unmolested.

Jotuns Attack Ashbury

A group of Jotuns led by one they called Goban attacked Ashbury City recently.

As many know, Jotuns are a race of giants that enslaved the Vansir race thousands of years ago. Recently, however, something has cause the Jotuns to become roughly the same size as most other races, though they retain their vast strength and resistance to attacks.

The Jotuns came into the city recently looking to reclaim a sword stolen from them long ago, and of course to slay vansir. Though not exactly cordial, if the other races of Ashbury did not attack Jotuns, they more or less left people alone. The Vansir, aided by some of the adventurers did attack, however.

Much of the adventurers in town were elsewhere when the Jotuns arrived and the attempts to slay them went poorly. Many of the combatants were routed and there were several resurrections, including Lord Jonathan, Rendar, Llewellyn, Kerak, Baldaorm and several others.

The next day, the Vansir were noticed to be weilding a glowing blade with some sort of runes upon the blade.

Hunt for the Golden Hart

A white bearded old man in a black cloak and red head wrap was seen walking about Ashbury City recently. Several adventurers stopped him to inquire as to what he wanted.

The old man revealed he was fey cursed and had to find a Golden Hart to become young again in order to find his wife.

Among those assisting were Guardsmen Strythus Xiloscient, Mori, Keires, Jezzabell and Jego, with the help of Cuar Hyanda, Aria Devonshire, and Wishell From Ashbury.  They all agreed to help the cursed man.

After a long wander through the forest with the help of the tracking ability of Strythus, they came across the stag. Everyone scattered in order to surround it in case it tried to run away. Strythus, having some left over banana bread from the tavern, fed the stag to gain its trust. He started to lead it back on the path they had used to enter the forest. Getting past Jego and Cuar, Strythus told Cuar to hit it with a gas globe. It had no affect on the stag.

The stag ran as the eight ran after it. After three hours and a lot of skills used, Keires and Aria Devonshire finally stopped it with a confine spell. Finding out it had a very thick hide, the elves with swords and bows hit it until it fell unconscious. Aria then checked using her Healing Art ability to determine how much longer it would be unconscious.

After getting it back to the outskirts of town the old man approached and killed the stag. The old man’s curse was lifted, but he had no memory of the group capturing the stag. The old man then ran off looking for the golden hart once again.

Ducal Proclamation

To the Citizens and Visitors to Ashbury,

I am pleased to announce the knighting of my squire, Sir Indorian Silverleaf. He will hold the position of Ducal Wizard and was knighted last Saturday eve in a ceremony held in His Majesty’s castle.

I am also pleased to announce the knighting of Sheriff Harrison Ryat. He shall retain his duties as Sheriff of Ashbury City. Sir Harrison was a knight many years ago under His Majesty and it only seemed proper that he resume his noble duties.

There will be a noble’s court followed by an open forum on Saturday October 4th at noon. It has become quite apparent the adventurers of Ashbuy exist on a different timetable and 10:00 am was much to early.

In addition, anyone with any information regarding the person calling himself Glantri or regarding the cave found outside town filled with a black mist should come forward immediately, either in person or via missive. Withholding information on these issues will be met with severe punishment.

In Service,

Duke Sir Frost Vardik

Magistrate’s Report

      by Sir Eros Clearbrook

Most of the day to day trials I conduct do not grab attention: petty thefts, drunken bar fights, and illegal Euphoria sales don’t make the headlines. Consequently, I rarely write a Magistrate’s Report for the paper unless a prominent citizen like a noble or adventurer is involved.

Recently, I tried the gypsy Sareth who had cast necromancy after being berserked. There was no question he had been berserked as there were many witnesses, and Sareth asked for leniency since his culture did not find necromancy as harmful. This, of course, is no excuse, nor do I believe that Glorianna or Dame Natasha would agree that a gypsy’s culture allows necromancy. Sareth was found guilty and given one death.

Citizens should be warned that the only defenses for the use of necromancy are Enslavement and Vampire control, and both of which need to be proven by the defendant. It is well known that a person who is berserked or dominated cannot be forced into casting necromancy, and will do so only if it is in his or her nature.

We have now seen Sareth’s true nature.

Sage’s Guild Report

by Guildmaster Cedric Fruvous

It is my duty to report that Sareth “The Verse” El’Noray is no longer a member of the Ashbury Sage’s Guild. Though not an active member, Sareth had retained his membership status and was preparing to return to his duties. However, his recent conviction for necromancy has resulted in his immediate expulsion from the Sage’s Guild and we shall not rent our earth spell book to him under any circumstances. We have no tolerance for crime in the Sage’s Guild, and necromancy is the worst crime that there is.

Now on to happier news. The Ashbury Sage’s Guild is pleased to report the promotion of Lauroc DerWyvernhaus to the rank of Guardian. We have also accepted Cuar Hyanda as an apprentice. It is hoped that both are happy in their new positions within the guild and are able to use their studies to aid Ashbury.

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

Lots of gossip this month, so let’s get started!

Mithrauko came to town recently to challenge Cedric to honor combat. It seems that Mithrauko is upset that Cedric calls himself “the purple wizard” since he also wears purple and is a wizard. They seem to agree that Cedric could be called “The Purple Parmedhil” (which means “Book-elf”) instead.

By the way, September 5, 603 is now being hailed as “the Day of the End of the Flame” or “Cedric’s Day” in some circles in celebration of the end of Pentathos’ gaffe.

The Black Forest has been making a real effort to clean up its reputation. They have been doing extraordinary amount of travelling between the mists and taking alot of risks for no rewards, which is not the Black Forest that you and I know. Are they sincere or is this a trick? They have even been seen hanging around with Sir Du’gual and Lord Jonathan of the Ash Forest, although when these two nobles needed assistance from the Black Forest, they were told a price would be required. Anyway, we will see how well the Black Forest’s reputation is upheld when Symerille comes back to town.

Lord Jonathan and Sparticous seem to have the entire city of Ashbury believing they are immortal. Lord Jonathan claims to have resurrected 14 times, and Sparticous claims to have resurrected 10 times. Could they be more than meets the eye?

Sparticous and Paythin spoke with Duke Frost about getting the Black Unicorns ducally sanctioned again, but His Grace seemed rather reluctant since they are the only two active members in the duchy. Sparticous has been acting very nobly since he fought against injustice in the future (or is it will fight?  I hate time travel!). He has not yet tried to squire himself to anyone, but I predict you may see that soon.

Paythin also spoke to His Grace about Baroness Talin’s mace on behalf of Agnar. The Fuke merely responded “I have the word of a noble in good standing of my duchy versus the word of someone who abandoned his lands and people.” Seems this controversy just won’t die no matter how many times the Duke refuses listen to Agnar’s proxied arguments.

It is rumored that Sir Harrison has upped his “Special Forces” of his town guard by two more people, bringing the total to three. These Adventurer Guardsmen will be taking on some of the more powerful elements of organized crime. Said the newly knighted sheriff, “The normal town guard doesn’t have the resources to hunt powerful adversaries that can store themselves in golems or cast necromantic rituals, but the Adventuring caste does. And with my guidance, we will be taking those elements down. Criminals, you have been warned.”

The former fey Silva has been seen running around the city murdering Galanthians ... wait ... why did we dislike him? He is presently wanted for murder of a person race, a Galanthian soldier that allegedly attacked him.

Reports from Corrheim say that Lord Find’rth and his brood have been buddying up to Mishrak and his lizardmen. So green lizards are okay, but red snakes aren’t.

Apparently there was some real grumbling among the adventurers after the battle with the Jotuns. It looks like the Vansir haven’t been pulling their weight when it comes to this threat to the Duchy. The Vansir charged the Jotun lines and were all but demolished, an extraordinary amount of healing and life spells went into trying to keep them alive, but through their own reckless abandon the Vansir suffered many resurrections anyway.

Thank you for all who sent me news this month and I hope you will excuse me if I do not use more than one or two things about yourself.  Don’t hog my column! Anyway, until next time remember:  If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
