A Kingdom is (Re)Born!

This past Halloween, the adventurers of of Ashbury and Icenia, lead by Duke Aramis of Ashbury and Duke Colin of the Icenian duchy of Falkirk, once again attempted the Rite of Royalty that would reveal whether or not Amora Fortannis would recognize Gareth ap Moire as the true and rightful king.

As the mist magically cleared, the Ashbans guarded Gareth ap Moire as they marched on the Mons Regalis, the sacred spot where the potential ruler to be tested places their foot. Baron Agnar and his court of the Ash Forest were leading the way as the spearhead.

Requin’s Maulers blocked the way and harried the adventurers at every turn, just as they did during the previous, failed attempt of late September.

But the adventurers of Ashbury managed to stay together as a cohesive unit as the bloody fighting raged in increasing intensity. Squire Talin of the court of the Ash Forest was heard giving rallying speeches and cries that boosted the morale of her fellows. The Ashbans succeeded in breaking through all opposition and at last reached the lake where the Mons Regalis lay.

Barring the path lay the final hurtle, Count Requin Drager and the remainder of his forces. Before any further combat ensued, the would-be usurper, Count Requin, called for a parlay with His Grace, Duke Aramis. Count Requin made an eloquent speech in which he suggested that the Blackbourne Compact and the Duchy of Ashbury join forces and truly unite and rule the land.

But Duke Aramis was no fool. Count Requin had betrayed Ashbury once before and worked to see its downfall.

His Grace replied, gesturing to the army of Ashbans and Icenians standing ready, “We will unite this land, Count, and we will drive you from it. Return to your lines and prepare for battle!”

Duke Aramis then shouted to his forces, “Are you ready, Ashbury?”

A tremendous roar of determination rose up from the Ashbans and Icenians and His Grace gave the order to charge. The fighting from start to finish was most fierce and mighty blows and deadly magics were exchanged and cast by both armies.

Count Requin and his personal guard fought toe to toe with Baron Agnar and His Graces Duke Colin and Duke Aramis until the usurper called upon the ritual of Spirit Recall and fled the battle.

The people of Ashbury and Icenia had won the day. After the remaining forces of the Blackbourne Compact were defeated, the adventuers assembled on two sides of a path leading to the Mons Regalis.

A silence fell upon the scene as Gareth ap Moire strode to the sacred spot. It seemed as if many held their breath as he placed his foot upon the Mons Regalis. When he did so, the land sang, thus recognizing Gareth ap Moire as rightful king.

A cheer rose up and Duke Aramis was the first to swear fealty to the new king and offer his sword to the service of the new monarch. Then came the oaths of fealty of Duke Colin and Baron Agnar. And just before the march back to Ashbury proper, Mattais, better known as “Rock-boy,” asked to swear fealty to King Gareth. The King smiled at the young adventuer then bent and picked up a stone. He handed the stone to Mattais and said, “Wield this against our foes.”

Now the Duchy of Ashbury and the recently risen ruins of the Duchies of Falkirk and Brittington are a buzz with great activity as the building of a new kingdom begins.

Thus a seed of hope has been planted.

Macabre Minstrel Manages Mischief

This past Halloween, those gathered in the Dragon’s Flagon found themselves suddenly cast into complete darkness. Glowing ghosts appeared from beneath the tables spooking many.  Then an otherworldly voice was heard, reciting a gloomy poem and a ghostly form of a cloaked skeleton rifted into the unlit tavern.

The ghost identified himself as the Minstrel of the Macabre, a member of the strange organization called the Apologue Commorancy, and the recorder and keeper of ghost stories.

He came to Ashbury to retrieve six scrolls, called the Phantasma Papyrus, containing powerful ghost stories that were stolen by the interdemensional fiend, Farve Garvae. In her flight from the Apologue Commoracy to Ashbury, Farve Garvae stumbled and dropped and scattered the Phantasma Papyrus across the capital city.

The Minstrel of the Macabre offered as reward that, for each scroll returned to him, he would answer one question about the past of any of Ashbury’s great enemies.

He explained that the danger of retrieving the scrolls lie in the fact that the scrolls possess the side-effect of drawing its possessor into their ghost stories. The stories must be played out in order to escape and retain possession of the scrolls. To give the adventurers an example of this, he placed them in a minor ghost story called “The Macabre Ball of Gothra Moor.”

When the Minstrel spoke the words “Once upon a time,” the adventurers found themselves in a town called Quiet Hollow, a grim place whose chief commerce centered around the funeral trade. They were the invited guests of the ball’s hostess, Quiet Hollow’s chief socialite, Gothra Moor, proprietor of the town’s only funeral home, Moor Funerals.

There the adventurers were given masks and told, “Wear them, they may save your lives” — and indeed this was true, as the Minstrel later explained. The masks, for the duration of Halloween, held the power to “edit” one bad outcome for the possessors.

Throughout the gathering reports came in that some of the scrolls were found, pulling the finders into terrifying stories.

And at the end of the gathering, two scrolls were returned to the Minstrel of the Macabre. What happened to the others is unknown at this time.

Icenian Vampire Attacks Town

On Sunday afternoon of October 31, 599, a young girl ran into town. She was very frightenend and claimed that many undead were coming out of the woods. Baron Agnar marshalled the town’s forces and headed out to investigate the disturbance.  Sure enough, just outside of town, a large force of undead was assembled.

With the able leadership of Baron Agnar, the town crushed the first group of undead.  Traveling a bit farther away from town, Ashbury’s finest encountered a second group that was also dispatched. Baron Agnar did an admirable job of keeping the town together and organized.

Then, upon a hill, appeared a third force of undead. A cloaked figure could be seen pacing back and forth in front of this group. This figure issued commands to the undead standing with it. The command also seemed to control a recently returned Icenian knight, Sir Madric of Corrheim (see accompanying article). The knight, who had been battling with the town against the undead, turned upon the town, firing a handful of gasses at those closest. The quick thinking Squire Rasq Darkmoon threw a flurry of spells, ending in Sir Madric being imprisoned.

The figure that had been leading the undead later dispelled the imprison, leaving Sir Madric to return to the fray. The figure turned out to be Tyranos, a vampire that often travels with the Freejyn horde. Baron Agnar eventually took down this foe of Ashbury. Sir Madric was again imprisoned, this time by Squire Talin Gildenlily.

A stake of woe and several other methods were tried to dispatch the vampire Tyranos, but none of them seemed to affect him. After five minutes, the vampire dissipated into the air. There was then much debate on what to do with the imprisoned Sir Madric. It was then that Nektet the sarr spoke up in Sir Madric’s behalf. He explained that Madric had been cursed by vampires long ago and now seven of them were able to control him. Baron Agnar told the cursed knight they would let down the imprison, but if he tried anything, he would be beaten down. Sir Madric immediately dropped his sword and gas globe once the imprison was dropped. Baron Agnar informed Sir Madric that this issue would be reported to the Duke and the King, but no further action was taken at that time.

The Story of Sir Madric

As told to the Ashbury Times by Sir Madric himself

Long ago, around 1000 years or so ago, I served Icenia as a knight in the barony of Corrheim.  I was sent to investigate a place of learning and research in our lands, The Academy of the Dawn. There had been rumors of missing people and strange happenings. With my squires, I went to investigate. Upon arriving, I questioned the Dean, Dartos Lochaber. Under intense scrutiny, his stories and alibis quickly collapsed. The academy was searched and secret dungeons and chambers were found as well as evidence of foul and dark rituals. The dean and his six professors were arrested, tried and sentenced to permanent death by obliteration. The Academy was burnt to the ground and its name expunged from the records of history. The execution day came, and all seven were obliterated.

Amazingly enough, all seven reformed, permanently dead. Their bodies were buried deep in an unmarked grave and their names stricken from history as well.

Several weeks later I was called upon to investigate strange happenings in one of the outer estates of Corrheim. Children had been disappearing. Some were never seen again. Some were found, ill and sickly and not remembering what had happened. I set out with my squires to investigate. One night, while staying in a small, country tavern, we were set upon by vampires. My squires were killed and I was taken captive.

Captive was I to remain for many years. I was cursed to be both living and vampire, so I would outlive my human lifespan. The Lochaber Clan did this so they could torture me.

Ironically, my escape from the clutches of the vile beings came about because of Glantri’s curse. As I was still half human, the curse affected me, while not affecting the vampires. While cursed, they were no longer able to control me and I fled, though I rememember very little of my time spent cursed. Once the curse was lifted, I made my way to Ashbury. I never thought they would have found me so quickly. I have enlisted the aid of some local adventurers. I seek to destroy any and all vampires and find a cure for my condition.

King Gareth's Presence Heals Land

Almost immediately after successfully performing the Rite of Royalty, King Gareth ap Moire embarked on a goodwill tour of the Duchy to rally support for the recently restored Icenians. His Majesty spoke well of the heroic efforts of Guildmistress Natasha, who has been, for the past month and half, working to find shelter and food for the many Icenians as they rebuild their lives.

Thousands of Ashbans flocked along the avenues of the King’s passage, crowding to see the very symbol of hope for the future. His Grace Duke Aramis Llyrr said that the morale of the people is at the highest it has ever been since the Duchy was plunged into this new world.

Duke Aramis also reports, via his land-bond, that the invasion of Amora Fortannis by it's dark counterpart, Amora Dun, has slowed somewhat and that the land is healing. The harvests will be late this year but plentiful and farmers no longer fear famine as they did earlier in 599. The tainting of water sources and supplies has also ceased.

His Grace also bids the people of Ashbury to sing the high praises of the heroes of Ashbury, for they have struck a blow for Justice and won a great victory for all living things.

In other good news, when His Royal Majesty successfully performed the Rite of Royalty, the Freejyn Horde retreated further along the Plains of Rage, away from the Duchies of Falkirk and Brittington, which are currently under restoration.

This came from the report of Squire Malfalin, of the Court of Blythdale, who leads a special unit of the barony’s troops in a hit and run campaign against the Freejyn. Squire Malfalin reported that the Horde hadn’t troubled the rebuilding of Falkirk or Brittington, but instead watched from afar.
The Horde has been camped on what was part of the Plains of Rage just north of the Barony of Nordenn and now is the Duchy of Falkirk. As if spooked by the “Awakened Ruler” legend, the Freejyn pulled back their massive numbers (which is estimated around 100,000 bloodthirsty fiends) further west on the Plains of Rage.

What this means now is that the infamous, nightmarish terrain no longer surrounds the duchy on three sides, but exists now only on our west and northwestern borders.

Dominick, Conspirators Guilty of Necromancy

Dominick the gypsy was recently found guilty of necromancy and sentenced to death. He had apparently cast the necromantic spells while fighting against some crazed barbarians.

Among those who had adventured with him were fellow gypsy Kheritana and Squire Aldric Harrington. Dominick apparently convinced them, as his friends, to not report the incident. Further, it was reported that the two threatened others who were aware to not report the crime either.

“If you do not report a crime — especially a crime as serious as necromancy — then you are guilty of Conspiracy,” Sir Eros told a group of squires gathered to consider the fate of the two conspirators. The Squires, which included Brynn, Malfalin, and Talin, decided that the punishment for the crime would be a death.

Squire Aldric immediately had his squire-ship revoked and was removed from his membership in the Healer’s Guild. “Let this be a lesson to all Guild members, that such actions are not taken lightly in the least,” said Guildmistress Natasha. “Perservere as true children of the Earth, and the Earth will protect you.  Forsake the Earth, and find yourself in need.”

All resurrected.

Town Guard Appreciated

The Ashbury Town Guard has seen their fortunes improved lately with good feelings from the common folk. The tasks they perform may not seem like much to the seasoned adventurer, but the Town Guard, in their concern and willingness to help, have shown the people of Ashbury that their hearts truly lie with the protection and service of the people.

Recently, when a young boy fell down a well in a small hamlet outside the town proper, the Guard came immediately to his aid. The boy was saved by the Dark Elf Merrick, who bravely scaled the treacherous walls of the well to retrieve him, much to the relief of his terrified parents.

On Herrick’s Farm at the border of the city, members of the Guard assisted Solomon Herrick in the retrieval of some of his livestock, which escaped their enclosure after the fence was destroyed by marauding goblins.  “It would have taken me hours to do it myself.” Solomon said.

“Many a noble could learn a lesson from the Guard’s exemplary behavior,” he added, although without naming any names.

Sage's Guild Report

Truly many things have happened in our Guild over the past few months. Information has been pouring in on many topics.

We ran many interviews for potential new members of the Guild. However, only two people were accepted. We welcome with open arms Candalis an, a gypsy with the most honorable intentions, and Gregor Quill, a human of great archeological skills.

If you are associated with, working for, answerable to, or doing business with criminal elements, don’t waste your time and ours applying to join this Guild. Attempts to harass us or threaten us will also bar you from even using our services and will prevent you from stepping foot inside.

Please also be considerate during interviews and meetings. If you were being interviewed, you would not like it if someone kept butting in and disturbing you. So when we say “Make an appointment” we are merely trying to accommodate everyone and be fair to all.

The members of the Sage’s Guild are all honorable and honest citizens who seek information the way others seek treasure. If you ever need our help, please do not hesitate to ask.

I would like to now take some time to explain a few situations that people have been discussing.
Several months ago, the biata of these lands were on the verge of annihilation. We fought a secret and somewhat deadly war. Some of us have been permanently scarred by this, and have been unable to participate in defending the citizens of Ashbury as we once did. This has been a very stressful time and to all those involved in assisting in this, I thank you from the depths of my heart.

Guildmistress Zatarina Norvick

Letters and Postings

Addressing Parduc Negrie

While I do not consider your words treasonous I must address them. How dare you!

I am Baron Jonathan Lornlyn Dragonheart and I have served under some of the finest nobility this Duchy has had to offer. I have been with this lands servant as its Sheriff, Magistrate, Squire, Knight, and now Baron. These past ten years I have fought beside some of its greatest defenders, and you come to our lands and in the space of a month presume to judge, my court and the citizens of Ashbury.

If it was not for the fact that I did not wish to see anymore bloodshed spilled on that field I would have cut you down where you stood. Many times I have died for my land and my beliefs.  I have had friends who have passed on fighting beside me, and even witnessed them go against impossible odds.

You have no idea as to the indomitable spirit which is Ashbury. Many times we have risen from the ashes and we shall again, mark my words. You may leave Ashbury, Parduc, but trust me you will hear of our glorious victory in the end.

Baron Jonathan Lornlyn Dragonheart

Calis,

We were told by the nobles that you turned on Ashbury and all its people. We were told that if we even so much as talked to you, we would be obliterated for treason. I believed this at first.  When I heard of your deeds and how you joined Requin I was disgusted. But now I question all of that. Are you truly a villain, or actually a hero?

When myself and four others went to investigate a cave, we met many creatures along the way. At one point we faced three viscous bone golems. I watched as Squire Sparktet was taken down by the creatures, then Ragnar, then I too fell in battle. I could feel my spirit about to leave my body when suddenly my lungs filled with air. Though I was still disoriented from the effects of the life spell, what I saw was something I will never forget. I saw the remains of the bone golems, and I saw a large figure granting Ragnar the gift of life. Then I watched as that large figure turned around, and it was you, Calis.

I owe you my life, Calis. And though to speak to you would mean I would be obliterated, I feel that I need the answer to the question that has haunted me everyday since this occurred — Why?

Perwin

Astrological Forecast

by Solemn Judgement

The remaining portion of Autumn brings us through the time of Earth: men harvest crops, wars conclude and all manner of plans begun in Spring now see resolution. From the Fire Ant’s crises of war and Convergence, a new Order emerges, and we would do well to contemplate it. From that contemplation, we mortal beings can make plans for the long Winter months ahead. Like the Lion, we take thought to marshal our wealth now; and next month, just as the Raccoon, we gather and store those resources to weather the bleak weeks of snow and ice ahead.

As this Scales year concludes, it seems likely that a great trend in the realm of Justice has taken another turn of the wheel. After several setbacks, His Grace the Duke together with the assembled nobility were able to bring stability to the newly-reborn kingdom of Icenia, heralding the coronation of a new king with the start of the Lion, as is only proper. The Shadow-Twin and his dangerous doubling effect have at last faded from the horizon, leaving the two most lordly of planets, Jupiter and Saturn to preside over the night sky, second in brightness only to the Moon (and much the more constant). Across the zodiac, there is a sense of this new Order coming into being, and the sundry elements which have flown through the lives of beings in recent months now move to one side or the other of a great divide, created by this emerging state as it destroys all others in favor of itself.

We must look well to the lessons of this past year, now that the King comes with Jupiter and the new Order is announced. From now through the end of the Raccoon, we must be especially careful to realize the effects of this state, the more so in a Scales year even than in most, as it portends justice in itself, and so increases the impact of these events. It may not be too much to say that Ashbury as a polity and society has at last found a home — or rather, created one from the elements of this curious plane of Amora-Fortannis in which we find ourselves.

Take a careful accounting of your own resources, like the Raccoon looking curiously over its own hoarde before storing it against the Winter. It cannot be overemphasized that the need is to prepare; for next year, 600 in the common calendar, is a year of the Arbalest, portending change and unrest, and if perhaps a time for potential profit, then certes not unaccompanied by danger.

I hope to disclose more of that year anon, closer to the time in question when mayhap the stars will be clearer to my poor mind. But this much suffices: e’en from this distance of time, I see stirrings of a year as powerful in its own right at this past one has been — and not completed yet.

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

The noble courts are all aflutter with the latest scandals and I can’t wait to get started!

Blythedale Squire Malfalin, in the name of Baron Jonathan, kicked Aldric and Kheritana off of the Baronial Court because, I have been told, he did not want it to suffer the same reputation as the Ash Forest.

The sad part of that is that Baron Agnar has a lot of respect from the people, but his Court seems determined to see that he never gets as much as he should.

Squire Sparky sure hasn’t been very helpful in that regard. He recently published a letter from Calis in which the treasonous villain claimed that the Ashbury Times had “misquoted him”— this despite the fact that the Times had merely reprinted word for word a flyer Calis had posted around town over three weeks earlier.  Sir Eros looked like he was ready to have the Squire executed right there. “You are acting as the mouthpiece for his treason and therefore you are guilty too!” the Magistrate said. His Grace Duke Aramis stepped in and said that while it showed a lack of poor judgment it did not rise to the level of treason.

Later, Sparky, Perwin and some others claim that Calis magically appeared to save them  when they were all about to die in some battle outside of town. Amazingly, after arriving just in the nick of time, he managed to escape. Good thing he wasn’t needed again, hm? And if you believe that story, I have a bridge in Taija’s Ferry that you might be interested in...

The Baron meanwhile has been seen to enjoy sparring with and roughing up his squires quite a bit lately. How many other barons do you know that roll around on the ground and play? Must be his age. Speaking of age, he has been overheard calling “The Good Squire” Talin Gildenlily his “Nana” and “Gramma.” Last I checked, it was not nice to make fun of a lady’s age, especially a lady with a weapon!

Saja received several offers from both the Ash Forest and Blythedale to join their courts. Baron Jonathan even offered him a captain’s position in his army. “I found that very funny,” he said. “Imagine a 13 year old sarr with no military experience trying to lead troops into battle!”

Out of room already? But there is so much more! Oh well, I will have to save some for the next issue. Until then, remember — If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
