Taris Advises Ashbury to go Back to the Way Station

Taris the Starmage, a known agent of Order, materialized in the middle of the Dragon's Flagon on Saturday, Jan 20th. The Starmage first visited Ashbury at the beginning of November last year when he came to prepare the citizens of Ashbury for the wave of Chaos that was to hit Tyrra.

Upon his return, Taris immediately expressed the need to speak with his "Champions of Order." As none of them were present in either the tavern or Ashbury City, the Starmage spoke with others, primary among them being Squire Gwynne Neumacht. Later upon their arrival, the Duke and the Duchess had a short meeting with Taris as did members of the Barony of the Ash Forest.

Squire Gwynne submitted this report summarizing her meeting:

The Chaos on our plane has grown so strong that it can no longer be closed from this plane. In order to close the rift and halt the advance of Chaos it is now necessary to journey to the Waystation--the center of the Chaos--and reform the broken seals which had contained Chaos.

In this effort, those chosen to accept "aspects" of the elements will still be instrumental, and it is of paramount importance to gather these people together. Taris believes that others besides the "aspects" alone will be necessary to stop Chaos, and that others must journey with the champions to the Waystation. He himself does not know how to reach the Waystation, nor does he know yet how to reform the seals and thus halt the Chaos' progress. He said upon departure that he was going to do research into these problems.

When I suggested that we attempt to find some way to contact the Houses of the Planar Federation--which many Ashbans joined while at the Waystation--Taris said that the Houses have been dissolved or scattered to the winds by the spread of the Chaos.

Taris specifically warned that we not use the Rod of Seven Rifts to attempt to close the Rift, as it is itself an instrument of Chaos. He said that Baron Thomas and Solemn Judgement have the power to close rifts and may be able to aid in both closing the smaller rifts that may crop up or in the larger struggle.

Taris listed many possible effects of the spread of Chaos, adding that even he was unable to predict the whole range of possible repercussions. Among the possible effects was the malfunctioning of rituals and the changes in some spells which have already been noted in Ashbury.

These effects will probably worsen as the Chaos progresses and increases in strength. "Chaotic" creatures such as undead will grow more powerful. The Starmage believes that more rifts directly to the Chaos plane may open as the Chaos progresses, and that spontaneous generation of creatures of Chaos may occur. Creatures of Chaos--perhaps even the Lords of Chaos_may come and "rip the plane into nothingness."

Chillingly, the Chaos is gaining momentum as it increases. Its recent spread appears to be harming Taris himself; he said that he is "not even safe in his own sphere."

As the Chaos increases the defenders of Order may eventually all be destroyed or perverted, and eventually the Balance itself--which apparently holds together the Multiverse--may be destroyed, taking the Multiverse (and its inhabitants) along with it. All that will remain is what Taris called "a swirling void of raw entropy." Although once again Order, Death and Life may emerge out of this void, as indeed occurred at the beginning of our own Multiverse, it would almost certainly be nothing we would recognize.

Interestingly, Taris said that no mortal can embody only one element. Each element has seven levels; a mortal can achieve only the second level of any one element without any harm to him or herself. Taris himself is of the seventh level of Order. Because no mortal can progress higher than the second level, even the mortal followers of Chaos will be destroyed eventually if the spread of the Chaos energy is not stopped, eradicated by a greater dominance of one element than any mortal can tolerate.

Taris gave me a brief history of the Multiverse, which I relate here, in the interests of better understanding of the issues. At first there was only Raw Chaos; out of this emerged the other three Elements: Order, Life, and Death. After the First Elemental War, waged between Chaos and the combined forces of Order, Death and Life, the three new elements succeeded in containing the primeval Chaos in the Multiverse at the place that is now called the Waystation. This was the so-called "Nexus," a place of neutrality where all could meet. However, the influence of Chaos decayed the Nexus until it became what it is today: the seedy "bar" of the Waystation, which many of us experienced last summer.

The Chaos was confined in the four "seals" which we saw broken last summer. Unbeknownst to many, the four Ambassadors known as the Incarnates [The Inquisitor (Order/Vis), the Marauder (Chaos/Entropy), the Celestine (Life/Genesis), and the Nefandus (Death/Nether)] were themselves "living" seals on the imprisoned Chaos, and their destruction by the Lord of Misrule Klaus Von Schreck released it by performing the Ritual of Unbinding using the blood of a fey, which contains trace amounts of the the four pure elements forbidden in the Waystation.

Since the ritual that destroyed the seals involved the blood of the fey--the oldest living beings--Taris believes that the fey may be involved in the reforming of the seals as well, although he is unsure.

As far as the steps those of Ashbury not chosen to be champions may take, Taris said that we must avoid chaotic action and, specifically, the casting of chaotic magic. The most serious kind of chaotic magic is, of course, necromancy, but other spells are largely chaotic in nature; these include Disarm, Shatter, Release, Dispel Magic, Awaken, Unparalyze, and Destroy. Corresponding Orderly magics, which may help to halt the spread of Chaos, are all binding magics and Awaken. The spell Imprison is the epitome of Orderly magic.

In addition to his champions the Starmage would like to speak with any Stone Elves in the area. Stone Elves, he said--and to a lesser degree Drae--embody Order more than other races and so may have a role to play in the upcoming struggle.

When confronted with the potential impossibility of getting some of the "aspects" to cooperate (notably Hamlet), Taris said that we would "make do with what we had." I asked the possible effects if we attempted to halt the Chaos without all of the aspects present; he replied that more research was necessary before he knew for sure.

I hope this brief compilation will help in the struggle against Chaos.

Ashbans who have accepted elemental "aspects" include: Sir Faustus von Neumacht: Eyes of Justice (pure Order); Squire Ivan Drake: Shield of Order (Order and Life); Unrok Garror: Sword of Law (Order and Death); Kheldar: Chaos and Death; Darius: Chaos and Life; Rake the Sarr: pure Chaos; Guildmistress Daphne Green: pure Life; Hamlet: pure Death.

Gathering all of these together shall prove to be a task, as Hamlet is in hiding, Squire Ivan has disappeared (rumors state he is overseas), and Kheldar and Darius of the Brotherhood were last seen entering the Chaos rift.

Winter of Chaos Grips Ashbury

The chaos rift torn open by a powerful elemental in the town square of Ashbury City has remained active since its opening in November, causing a myriad of strange and disturbing effects to plague local citizenry.

The first documented case occurred when the rift began to flash and pulse for a number of hours early in the morning of the last week of December. Energy from the pulses melted snow in the area and caused flooding in a number of homes. After a few hours, the rift calmed, but has repeated this behavior sporadically during the following weeks.

In a nearby stable, horse owners and trainers report that their animals have been thoroughly agitated since the rift's opening, making work around the livery dangerous. Messenger service and travel were both disrupted as a result.

In Dockside, a group of magisterial guards fell prey to the rift's strange energies when they assaulted a thieves' guild safehouse. Three guards lost their lives when they burst into a modest, one story home and were flash frozen into statues of ice. Inside were the bandits they had sought to apprehend, also icebound and unmoving. It is presumed that the rift somehow caused the temperature within the structure to plunge to an unimaginable level. A resident sage predicted that those frozen would probably resurrect if "shattered," but the guard captain would not comment.

A group of merchants newly arrived from Trellheim claimed to be under attack when they passed too close to the rift with a wagon load of weapons. The daggers and knives they specialize in crafting were mysteriously animated by chaotic energy and began to fly about the city streets chopping at innocent passerby. After nearly half an hour of this activity, the blades mysteriously ceased their dance and dropped to the ground. There is an unconfirmed rumor that the merchants dumped the "cursed knives" into the river.

Even those who make their homes outside of town are feeling the effects of the chaos rift. Farmers in Vorak's Peak report that despite the cold weather, swarms of thousands of large, mutant bats with glowing red eyes descended upon their land and attempted to feed upon their livestock. Any animals bitten then contracted a hideous, disfiguring disease that drove them mad and forced owners to kill them.

Scattered reports have also filtered in regarding strange behavior in children, an increase in undead activity, and an accelerated deterioration of some liquids and foodstuffs.

Spellcasters also reported fluctuations in their castings. In Fenmarch, it was reported that for an entire week, the spell Imprison did not work, even when cast from items. In Diron meanwhile, a member of the town guard reported that his magic dagger stopped glowing for an entire day and when Identified, showed no trace of magic whatsoever.

This rampant chaos prompted a number of citizens from Connor and Safehaven to hold an impromptu gathering on one landowner's ranch to discuss the matter. The mood was one of anger and frustration. There were cries of outrage at the inability of the nobles to close the rift and many questions raised as to why the formidable ranks of Ashbury's adventuring community had not worked to stem the tide of chaos that was washing across the region. Although the tone of the crowd had grown threatening by meeting's end, a trio of well spoken merchants kept the gathering civil.

Things have not been as well received in Forestheart or Tower Hills, where commoners complained about their liege lords' inability to deal with the problem. Although most of the nobles of Ashbury are attempting to do all they can to close the rift, many commoners do not see their efforts.

In the Tower Hills, an effigy of Baron Justice was burned and rioting broke out, but some attribute this not as much to displeasure about the rift as displeasure with Baron Justice. The dissident's leader claims that the Baron has not done enough to rebuild the Tower Hills after its many fights with the trolls.

Although things have calmed somewhat for now, it is unclear how much longer the situation will be tolerable. This may be as tough an enemy as Ashbury has ever faced.

Ashbury to Celebrate Centennial

February has always been a month of festive holidays for the Kingdom and a special time for the people of Ashbury, doubly so this month because our fair duchy is celebrating its one hundredth year as a fiefdom of Evendarr.

The holidays begin on the second day of the month, known as Goblin Day. An old children's tale claims that on this day, a goblin will rise from its winter slumber and poke its head outside the cave it is sleeping in. If it sees its shadow, the rest of the winter will be severe and it will go back to sleep. If it does not, the people of the land have a mild winter to look forward to, although the goblin is supposed to wake up his fellows so they can return to their normal routine. In Ashbury, all eyes are turned toward the goblin caves located to the northwest of the city in the hope of glimpsing the elusive spring goblin.

On February 15th, King and Queen's Day is celebrated. This year's holiday also promises to be special with the ascension to power of our new, yet old king. This day is normally set aside to honor the kings and queens who once ruled Evendarr, but King Mykel comes to the throne from two hundred years in the past! Crowds have already begun to migrate to Evendarr City to catch a glimpse of our new monarch. The celebration promises to be a big one.

In Ashbury, however, February 25th will be the most important holiday of the year for noble and commoner alike. This year's Ashbury Day will be its one hundredth, and citizens will be hard pressed to go anywhere at all in the duchy without finding a celebration going on this day.

With a history as rich as Ashbury's, there is certainly cause to rejoice. Over three hundred years ago, the Barony of Blythedale was formed as a part of the Duchy of Rotaria through the efforts of King Ulson Endarr III. More than a hundred years later, the town of Ashbury sprung up on the banks of the Ash River. Population by Rotarian settlers and victory over the trolls of Fangthorn in the years that followed gave birth in 496 to the Duchy of Ashbury. During the next century, Ashbury suffered in wars with the Northmen barbarians, the undead of Mourna, and the return of Fangthorn's armies. But it also prospered and became home to the Royal Bardic College, Midnight Guildhall, and some of the most beautiful estates in the entire kingdom.

This year's celebration is sure to be a grand event, so make sure you're in the capital as the two days of festivities begins on Saturday, February 24th. You'll be sorry if you miss this one!

Snow Queen "Punishes" Ashbury With Record Snow

Because of attacks upon her minion Jack Frost by Ashbury citizens, The Winter Snow Queen exacted revenge by dumping more than two feet of snow on the capital and the surrounding areas early last month.

The Snow Queen herself was seen in the area of Nantes, and with Jack by her side, chided some local farmers, telling them to blame their leaders for allowing "poor Jack" to be constantly assaulted.

The snow caused more than 20 deaths in the region, the most serious of which was in Nymphwood, where nine citizens died when a building collapsed from the weight of the snow. Other casualties occurred in Kiri-Ashton, Wellspring, Rodyn, and Deathwatch.

Magistrate's Report: Caleb Hand Found Guilty of Murder; to be Executed

by Lord Magistrate Sir Faustus von Neumacht

Just as last year, the New Year holiday brought with it a rash of crimes. However the most significant case I tried was that of Squire Caleb Hand, Court Healer of Trellheim. Details of the crime were related in the August 595 Magistrate's Report. Caleb stood accused of killing five dark elves early one morning in July. The dark elves had attacked Lady Talia and Squire Florin as part of some bizarre Fey game played upon Tyrra. Caleb had a motive for the attack, was documented to have been present just minutes before, and was seen by both Squire Florin and the dark elf Tika (who had a perfect resurrection) killing the dark elves, in spite of his denials.

The dark elven leader Gazrith (who styles himself Duke Baylor of the Fey) was found guilty of two counts of Necromancy (one against Lady Talia, one against the Gerakari) and one count of Murder against Lady Talia (who was subsequently Lifed). He remains wanted to serve four outstanding executions.

Of his retainers, Velverin, Erif, and another were sentenced to execution, which was considered administered as they were slain by Caleb in the course of their crime. However, given that the fifth dark elf, Tika, played no role in the attack, was not warned of it by her new leader Gazrith, and actually recoiled in fear and surprise during the incident, I decided leniency was in order.

Tika was found guilty only of Conspiracy charges for failing to try to stop the crimes, or immediately fleeing to report them. Her fine was waived given that she had been murdered with the rest.

Though Caleb's solicitors, Lord Hanson and Morlox put up an excellent defense of their client, the facts pointing to his guilt remained, and I had no choice but to convict Caleb. I did consider the fact that he was intervening in a crime scene, and killed four criminals I would have executed anyway--but the fifth bystander, whom I judge largely innocent, and in no case deserving of death, was indiscriminately slaughtered with the rest.

I reluctantly accept that in some cases, a Magistrate cannot be present or accessible to try cases, and occasionally criminals will be killed in the act of their crimes. Individuals involved must report such actions of last resort to the Magistrate with jurisdiction. In Caleb's case, I judge that he both concealed his involvement in the slayings, and was mistaken in killing all the dark elves in order to remove the witnesses. I mandated that Caleb pay each of the dark elves two gold, as even criminals deserve to know that they died as a result of justice, rather than having the reasons for their deaths concealed. I also ruled that Squire Caleb Hand will be executed.

This execution is for the murder of Tika, who was largely innocent and did not deserve to die. Yet in the course of his vigilante furor, Caleb mistakenly killed her as well. While I may acknowledge that in rare occasions extra-judicial punishments must be imposed in the course of fighting criminals, those involved will be held absolutely accountable for their actions. As in this case, such people must bear full responsibility for any error or overzealousness.

I know well that this has been a controversial case, but a civilized society such as ours, administered by the rule of law and governed by the tenets of Order can tolerate no other outcome--even when the culprit is a respected healer on a noble court. As this case illustrates, the law applies to all, high and low, and in this matter, justice has at last been done.

There were numerous other trials conducted recently. I dispatched a group of adventurers to capture the gypsy Kavia Barisano, who stood accused of kidnapping children in order to transform them into members of her race. The adventurers discovered that Kavia had taken the children from abusive, unfit parents, and the children genuinely wished to stay with her and become gypsies. Given the evidence presented, I showed leniency, sentencing Kavia to work at the Havenwood Orphanage for the next year and to take care of the children.

In other cases, a bard who was trying to summon the Fire Elemental Lord Ignatius to burn Ashbury was executed.

The gypsy Istvan was convicted of assault for waylaying a (different) student from the Bardic College. Since the gypsy had good intentions and was sternly rebuked by the other gypsies in town, he was fined only 3 gold.

Narc McEwan was found guilty of Assault for casting spells upon Smith the dwarf. The two had an argument about trolls, but fortunately they were reconciled after this regrettable incident. Also some drunken sailors of rival ships who were constantly fighting each other and disturbing the party were locked away for the night.

A new band in Ashbury, consisting of Kendall McKleod, Bryan McGregor, Erih McClean, and Rowen McLyr foiled a counterfeiting ring in Dockside. As this incident occurred outside my jurisdiction, the case was transferred to the capable Magistrate of Dockside. Still, I awarded the band five gold from Ashbury's legal fine fund for their exemplary actions.

A search for the gypsy Alexei, who was recently kidnapped from the tavern, is currently underway--information leading to his recovery will be greatly rewarded. The hunt also continues for Hamlet, the Betrayer of Ashbury and reason for the continued existence of the Chaos rift.

I hope the havoc that this Chaos rift has wreaked has convinced the citizenry that elemental Chaos is an evil force--a cancer that needs to be destroyed. Surely the necromantic abominations which spew from the rift must convince even the "Chaos apologists" and extreme adherents of "balance" and noninterference that this is true. I continue to have no doubt that the accursed rift, which is responsible for everything from the fluctuations in magic to our recent unnatural weather, will be closed, and that the perfection of Order shall triumph over the raw corruption of Chaos.

News From Around the Duchy

Ector: A celebration in honor of Sir Pineas fesatured a performance by the renouned Evendarrian performer Lucinda Moore. The reclusive singer was lured to the town because she supposedly owed someone there a favor.

Safehaven: Another attack by the vicious tiger sarr and their allies occured in this section of Ashbury city. They avoided anyone in armor and with weapons, and after causing a number of deaths to commoners, scattered and could not be captured.

Stormwood: A number of humans were taken by surprise when a pantherghast appeared in the farmer's market. The pantherghast was quickly destroyed by the citizens of this primarily human area. The caster was not found, and his or her motives are a mystery.

Taija's Ferry: A rumble ensued in this small town when a group of drunken Nimani border guards began insulting local citizens. The troublemakers were caught and brought to justice and exiled to Niman.

Wilmarth: A thunderous explosion of flame in the Guildhall of Pugilists at Corleonis is suspected to be the work of Voltan troublemaker Lotar. Five people were killed in the attack, but baronial authorities seemed confident that Lotar would soon be caught. Lotar escaped Ashbury City on the evening of the New Year after attempting a mass murder which involved a powerful explosive trap he planted in the Dragon's Flagon tavern.

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D'Onym

Not much room this month, and hardly anybody wrote to me (boo hoo), so this will be short:

Bodin (a/k/a "Cabin Boy") from the Harvest Moon is acting like a rat jumping from a sinking ship. He has been seen around town looking for a new job with new adventurers.

Smith the Smith has been heard grumbling (well, when hasn't he been heard grumbling?) that the various guilds are killing business for the solo merchant. Better not say that too loud, Smithie, you know how touchy some of these guilds can be!

Freya the wild elf has been spending a lot of time lately in the Dragon's Flagon going goo-goo eyed over some new gypsy, but which one? I'll never tell! (OK, here's a hint: she's female.)

Stories have trickled in from the University of Blackstone that Killian Drake, who has been studying there since November, has racked up almost enough demerits to get himself expelled. Something to do with a lab fire and interruption of ritual magic. . .

Till next time, remember--if you can't say something nice about someone, come sit by me.

Letter to the Editor

The Good People of Ashbury:

Your political leaders have inadvertently caused you some horrible financial difficulties as well as numerous health hazards. Because of some discrediting remarks and two assaults upon my person, I decline the Duke's invitation to attend his "closing" party.

You see, my goodwill return to your political boundaries would cause health problems of my own.

Your newly knighted Lord Faustus Neumacht arranged for my murder by Galoran and Modi in broad daylight. They were fined 8 gold for killing me. That coupled with the Duke's Proclamation made my return improbable.

Don't believe the publicity. It is obvious who is guilty of treason. Those who were publicly thanked by the Denizens of the Chaos Rift are the acknowledged criminals. One should note that the Duke acted upon those self-proclaimed Servants of Chaos' words without allowing me to defend myself against their accusations.

I have been convicted of Treason in my absence for not being at a ritual that I could not attend because I was resurrecting during it. The ones who Chaos thanked for "making his victory complete" were, like Galoran and Modi, fined 8 gold for their treasonous behavior. It seems that you can pay for the privilege of murdering a dwarf for only 8 gold!

The public should note that the ritual was originally scheduled for the night before and that I was promptly there in attendance, prepared to participate.

The next day I resurrecting remembering nothing during a time when all others who died remembered their deaths. I found out that I had been convicted in my absence.

I have taken this time to present my version because a "Hang-'em-high" monkey trial will not allow me a chance to defend myself. I shall not be tried for treason again when I can live comfortably in my homeland, away from such injustice.

However, I do not wish to leave you with such a difficult dilemma. I have made an offer to your leaders for my services in closing the rift. I suggest you urge your political leaders to take this offer. The consequences of the rift will grow and Ashbury will suffer the negative effects.

Hamlet

THE STARMAGE has warned us that the casting of "lesser" Chaos magics, which include the spells Disarm, Shatter, Release, Destroy, Charm, Unparalyze, and Dispel Magic, may increase the Chaos pouring through the rift, and should be avoided.
