Adventurers Aid Synvia, Fight Pirates
On the 5th night in the month of December, adventurers from
Ashbury arrived on Synvia to answer the call for aid from the island’s
residents. Synvia is located just off the coast of the Ash Forest and is noted
for being a home for the various scavenger races, who call themselves
“karobwa.” It is part of the estate of South Point, and is under the
supervision of Baroness Glen. Many scavengers, however, are hoping that it may
soon be a freehold.
Among the adventurers heeding the call were the elves
Jezebel, Ezri and Lentis, the biata Sarina Merik and Sai Vang, Kyrel the dwarf, Rongo the barbarian, Bok the high orc, and
karobwa Grandeurous Delirium and Enko.
When the adventurers arrived, they were greeted with silence.
No karobwa were in sight, and the buildings were empty. A heavy snowfall
covered the land and made travel difficult, but tracking easier.
Shree J’ree, a skunk karobwa, later met them in a small
coastal village on behalf of the Council of Barcorac. She was accompanied by a
rhinoceros advisor named Kralinth, and together they informed the adventurers
that Karobwa were disappearing at an increasing rate, including the entire
village where the adventurers arrived. Before leaving to retire for the night,
Shree informed the adventurers that the rest of the Council would arrive the
next morning.
However, the following morning, Shree arrived alone. None of
the other Council members were anywhere to be seen. After waiting more than an
hour, Shree dispatched several karobwa that arrived with the adventurers to
travel to Barcorac to discover what was detaining the other Council members.
Outside the city, the scouting party encountered several
groups of karobwa fleeing from Vacarrans. The adventurers attacked, and after
these groups were saved from their pursuers, the scouts continued on to
discover Barcorac overrun with Vacarran pirates! Making their way through the
more deserted areas of the city, the adventurers found no sign of surviving
karobwa.
When word of Barcorac’s state reached her, Shree immediately
called for the adventurers to march to Barcorac to liberate the karobwa’s
capital city. They were met at the gates by a concentrated force of Vacarran
pirates, who had no intention of giving up their newly gained city. Shockingly,
several karobwa fought alongside their Vacarran conquerors against Shree and
the adventurers. Later, it was discovered that one of the karobwa was actually
a werewolf, and was commanding infected karobwa to fight.
After the Vacarrans were routed from Barcorac, the
adventurers scoured the city, eventually finding hidden warrens beneath the
city, where various burrowing karobwa make their homes. Many karobwa were still
missing, including the other members of the Council. Search parties were sent out
across the island, guided by a map found on one of the Vacarrans in Barcorac
indicating the location of several pirate hideouts. At each of these locations,
small bands of pirates were found holding karobwa captive.
Although no Council members were recovered, Shree’s advisor
Kralinth was found within a cave. This cave, incidentally, turns out to be the
very one that supposedly held captive the dark fey who controlled the Vacarran
Pirates in the future many adventurers claim to have experienced.
That night, the Vacarrans returned seeking revenge. This time
Captain Lowpeg led them in their assault on the adventurers’ inn. The pirates
laid siege to the inn, where the adventurers struggled to stave off the
incursion. At long last the adventurers pushed back against the waves of
Vacarrans, and gained the upper hand in battle. Lowpeg, in a weakened state on
land, fled with his lieutenant to a nearby bridge that spanned a lake. There he
took the form of a death knight, where only powerful earth magic from Shree and
another karobwa healer succeeded in taking Lowpeg down.
Amidst the dust of Lowpeg’s fallen corpse was a note from
someone named Gorellain. The name must mean something to the karobwa, because
every one spoken to refused to talk about him. This note mentioned a time and
place for a meeting between Gorellain and Lowpeg, some place along the northern
coast of Synvia.
A scouting party combed the northern coastline, searching for
the pirate’s cove. After a lengthy search, they spotted a few pirate guards
standing outside a cavern entrance atop a cliff face that overlooked the ocean.
Another cave opened at the base of that cliff, large enough for a small ship to
sail into. Rather than confront the guards and risk raising an alarm, the group
slipped back unnoticed and reported their finding to the rest of the gathered
adventurers.
The adventurers arrived at the pirate’s hidden base just in
time to witness a pirate vessel dock within the cave. Surprised at the presence
of intruders, the pirates attempted to drive the adventurers out. The ensuing
battle was chaotic, as Vacarrans shifted between living and undead forms as
they crossed back and forth across the waterline. Captain Lowpeg was present
again as he led his forces against the Ashbans. In the middle of the battle,
another ship entered the cove. Out of it stepped an elven man, who would later
be identified as Gorellain, and a wolf woman recognized as the werewolf the
adventurers defeated in Barcorac the day before.
The elf had heated words for Gorellain, who then ordered some
of his men to begin transporting karobwa from his vessel to Gorellain’s. As the
Ashban adventurers surged forward, Lowpeg was slain and his followers panicked.
They cut lines and began to sail away, as did Gorellain and the werewolf in their
own ship. A third, smaller ship was also within the cove, and the adventurers
used it to persue the enemy. Faced with the decision of which ship to chase,
they sought to take on Gorellain who seemed to be the mastermind behind the
karobwa abductions.
The small, oar-powered boat quickly caught the larger ship in
the still waters near the coast. When the adventurers boarded Gorellain’s ship,
they found many karobwa locked in a pen on the deck. Gorellain tried to bargain
for his escape, freely offering the prisoners in exchange for his freedom. The
Ashbans would have none of that, however, and overwhelmed the elven mage and
slew him and the werewolf. Other karobwa were also recovered from within the
pirate’s cove, which the adventurers had not the time to search in their
pursuit of Gorellain.
Among those karobwa, three Council members were rescued:
Gregorin, a bear in charge of defense, Scholalric, a fox in charge of scouting,
and Kylie, a raccoon in charge of food.
Now, apparently before the other Council members were
recovered, Shree offered both of the recovered ships to the Ashbury adventurers
as a reward for all their work. Well, this caused quite a stir among the rest
of the Synvian Council, who felt the ships would be better put to use in
recovering from the Vacarran attacks. Many of the Ashban adventurers felt they
had the right to those ships, while the karobwa saw this is nothing but greed.
In the end, both parties settled by allowing the adventurers
of Ashbury sell the ship to the karobwa Council for a small fraction of what it
is worth.
(See accompanying article by Enko for more details and a
different view of the trip to Synvia.)
Ashban Adventurers Help Synvian Korobwa
By Enko Queeko
I returned to Synvia late in the season, in search for my
Mom. I lost her and the rest of my relatives when many people were swallowed by
the black mist and brought to the future. I also came to find wisdom.
Finding her wasn’t difficult, but as I wandered the island
looking for wise men I discovered that many of my people, the karobwa, were
missing. In fact, one day I came upon an entire village that stood completely
empty.
I was not aware that the Council had sent word to Ashbury for
aid, so it came as a surprise to me when I met some of the strongest and surely
the bravest adventurers of Ashbury in an inn in an unnamed village. Broc, orc
of the Laughing Skull clan, Kyril Flamebeard of Dwareneggar, Rongo the
barbarian, and Erzi, an elven archer. Two karobwa brothers, Grandeur and
Narcissus, also came to help, in addition to many who were traveling through
the mists: The elves Jezebel and
Grail, and the hobling Sirus. Finding herself stranded on Synvia after her
people were driven from their Isle, was the Child of Camulous Katyreena, who
also helped my people. There were also two biata, a barbarian, and some others
whose names unfortunately I do not remember.
Broc, Kyril, and Rongo had visited this very village when
they were trapped in the horrible future at the request of then-Emperor Glantri
along with many other adventurers.
It seemed that many of us arrived on Friday night too late to
help the poor villagers who lived and worked in the small village that we found
ourselves in. A penguin healer was resurrecting in the circle by himself and he
was the only korobwa around. He explained that he had been dominated and forced
to heal karobwa as they were being taken captive by human-type people. Though
his hand glowed with aura, he stated he had used many of his spells healing
karobwa. Many of us questioned why
if people were taking slaves that they would kill a powerful healer instead of
taking him captive, and also how the karobwa managed to resurrect himself in a
circle, but we had more pressing problems to deal with and the penguin seemed
nice.
We put our heads together to try to come up with a reason why
anyone would want to take karobwa captive. We don’t make good slaves, we are
obstinate and many of us take a long time to learn what other races deem
“simple” tasks; we also don’t live very long or work very well together. We
don’t make good food, because we usually resurrect after you eat us.
In the midst of our discussions, the dock nearby the village
was a flurry of activity. Many
karobwa scouts had spotted a ship headed our way. As it grew closer and closer in the snowy, cold darkness, we
could see that it was definitely a Vicarran pirate ship, and there was more bad
news, because to the north a second ship was docking. We spoke with the karobwa
scouts and decided that we would defend this side, and let them go and defend
the other.
The pirates came off of their ship and I watched from the
darkness nearby. I watched as flesh grew over the bones of the pirates who long
ago were cursed to be undead when they are over water. When they approached we
asked them what they were doing here, what they knew about the missing karobwa,
and if they wanted to be rid of their curse.
We had many misadventures trying to find out what had
happened to the karobwa. We found few of them, as in the end, it seemed to us
that someone was employing the evil Vicarran pirates to capture them. In the
end, it was an old Synvian enemy, the elf who betrayed us, who was the culprit.
We captured two ships, one which I kept now called the
“Children’s Song,” and the other which was argued for a long time over by the
council and the gathered adventurers. Some of the adventurers wanted to bring
the boat back to dockside and sell it, some wanted to give it to the karobwa.
Both groups were so caught up in what they thought that the other group was
saying and doing that they could scarcely see eye to eye at all.
A few members of the Council were stuck on the idea that the
adventurers were greedy from their previous experience with them, and the
adventurers would take what one council member said and think that the entire
population of Synvia felt that way. It was a mess, and quite possibly the most
difficult fight during the whole of the few days that the adventurers were
there.
I came seeking my family, and I came seeking wisdom. I found
my family, and I found that wisdom isn’t something that can easily be measured.
Those who are wise are sometimes not, and sometimes those who seem least wise
have inside them a gem of insight that lets them see more clearly than an
eagle.
Thank
you for reading my words.
Death Toll Rises in Bloodstone
Bloodstone
has been the target of the attacks of the recently returned Freejyn Horde,
which some are now calling the Plane or Elemental Touched, for quite some time.
His Excellency Baron Morgasander has ordered that one of the phalanxes of
Nordenn take up semi-permanent residence there. This action has bolstered
relations with the Council, however, some of the people of Bloodstone seem none
too pleased.
“Not
only do we have to worry about these Plane Touched creatures appearing, but the
very sanctity of our homes are violated by the presence of all these lesser
races. We should withdraw underground,” said Balfonst Torak, a local resident
when asked about the current situation. “Now go, and leave me in peace,” he
added.
The
attacks are seem completely random.
The Plane Touched appear out of nowhere from every direction and begin a
merciless slaughter, kicking down doors and slaughtering people in their sleep
on some occasions. Even the
defenseless are not safe; as recently as midwinter a school was burned to the
ground with the children and teachers still in it.
What
is behind these attacks? A
creature calling itself “The One.”
Described as a majestic being with grey skin and elemental markings, who
wields a magic sword which some say is in a gryphon motif.
Hopewell
has sent militia to assist in the battle, as so far only Bloodstone and Ashbury
city have been attacked. In the late fall, an emissary from Thessi claimed that
their homeland has been attacked as well.
Sir
Jonathan Dragonhart was seen in Bloodstone assisting where he could, as well as
Squire Glorianna Wyndancer.
Nordenn’s
forces claim that the forces that they are encountering are dwindling slightly,
and that the Plane Touched are suffering casualties as well. Perhaps the reason the forces are
dwindling is due to permanent deaths amongst the horde. The army has only met with marginal
success in being in the right place at the right time for the attacks.
Duke Aids Moorgrave
His Grace, the honorable Duke Frost’s visits to Moorgrave
have been doing some good for the necromantically burdened country. Many
powerful necromancers have turned themselves in to be spirit forged to
celestial casters.
Necromancy has not yet been made illegal in Moorgrave but
public opinion seems to be changing. Sir Indorian of the Ducal Court has been accompanying Duke
Frost, bringing both the knowledge of a celestial caster and the
anti-necromancy philosophy of an elf to Moorgrave. People there seem to be
listening and some promise and hope is being seen.
Meanwhile, while Duke Frost was visiting Moorgrave, in
Glenrake, an unkown assassin penetrated the defenses of the Duke of Glenrake’s
castle and assassinated the powerful undead. It is said the assassin snuck in
through the highest tower. This tower is left lightly defended as it was
supposed to be unreachable.
“It’s as if
the assassin almost fell from the sky,” said one guard.
News From Around
Tar’Navarria
Ash Forest
The creature known as Sil Galad has been on the prowl
throughout the winter season. It has been seen in all three baronies, the
contested lands once known as Trellheim, and in the Ducal Fiefs. It has been
followed by the creatures of darkness and what have now been identified as
elven pantherghasts. There have been several reports of the creature and
pantherghasts crumbling to dust on their own, and the darkness creatures soon
left the area each time this happened. Baroness Glen has sent her court into
the Ash Forest to meet with the people.
Mishrak Fens
Usually the Mishrak Fens are quiet this time of year, as the
lizardmen that live there hybernate deep underneath the frozen ground. This
year seems to be an exception, as Ducal Scouts report sighting much activity in
the Fens. Night time battles between trolls and unknown forces have been
witnessed from a distance. However, the trolls’ opposition was seen to be using
flaming weapons that lit up the night. Fires have also been seen glowing in the
depths of the Fens, both during the night and during the day.
Trollsgate
Recent reports from the Court of King Kelanor III indicate
that he is unhappy with the small size of his country. Trollsgate was formerly
part of Trellheim, but was granted sovereign status by the beloved Duke Aramis
Llyrr. It is rumored that the dwarves of Trollsgate have been preparing a vast
store of armor and weapons and have been training even more diligently than
usual in military matters.
Imladar
The cold
weather actually seems to be bringing a respite for the elves of Imladar in
their besieged capital city of Alocandros. The ogre armies of Dur Namarie,
despite their rigid discipline, are not well suited to winter maneuvers and
spend most of their time huddling around their fires waiting for the spring
thaw. It is even rumoured that Arakan Mithrauko leaves the army for the winter
months to spend time back home, away from the rigors and bitter cold of camp
life. The grey cloaked forces that had been attacking supply caravans of the
Dur Namarie have even been so bold as to attack outlying camps and pickets,
seemingly unaffected by the bitter, winter weather.
Letters
To the Courageous Adventurers,
My thanks to all those that aided the Island of Synvia in its
time of need. Though often overlooked, this island is indeed an integral part
of the Duchy of Ashbury, bringing color and culture most welcomed to our lands.
Thank you one and all to those that travelled there through
storms and pirates to help protect our Korabwa citizens while I was away.
Duke Sir Frost Vardik
To The Esteemed and Honorable Populace of Ashbury,
Long has my house traveled the surface lands and Ashbury in
particular, longer than many of the self styled “adventurers” that frequent the
lands. We have seen individuals and groups come and go. Throughout this time we
have treated with Ashbans and other surface dwellers fairly and honorably. We
have in return been treated with much honor and respect by most, and most
notably by the nobles of Ashbury and Icenia.
I have not written a letter to this periodical in quite some
time, as for the most part the people of Ashbury have treated us courteously.
But perhaps it is time again to put quill to parchment. For those that do not
understand the Dark Elven race, we prize two things above all else, our honor
and our privacy. We do not pry into the affairs of others nor do we gossip and
spread confidential knowledge. I personally know of many issues that I’m sure
some of you would not want spread throughout the lands, but I do not discuss
them like an old woman at market.
We have friendly and peaceful relations with Ashbury and
Icenia. I hold respect for your King and your Duke and many others.
I am a proponent of bringing greater aid to your lands from
mine and am in a position to make this a reality. Your lands our beset on many
sides by many enemies and I am sure this aid would not be unappreciated.
I am not a humorless dark elf nor am I without the
understanding that other cultures differ from ours. But words and apologies are
only worth as much as the sincerity behind them and the actions that follow
them. I have been subject to worthless apologies and words of late.
May the darkness hold only allies,
Lord Find’rth T’Varian
House Ryujima of the Dark Elven Nation of Tarzaterranzan
Greetings, one and all!
Might I take a moment of your time and introduce myself? I am
Captain Lockjaw Jane of the Bawdy Maiden, at your service. I come to you by way
of the high seas as a merchant sailor of the highest class: transporting and
delivering fine ales, wines, liquors and other bubbly brew to any such place as
the sea might have access. Regrettably, circumstances are such that I find
myself shipless, crewless and, moreover worse yet than that for a seafaring
woman such as myself, I find myself landlocked in a place I’ve not been since I
was a wee-little thing with naught but scraggly whiskers for a beard.
So I open myself to your kindness and hospitality. I have
been privy to many a coin-worthy tale of land-bound adventurers and I do look
forward to making all of your acquaintances. If any would so enjoy, I wear
eleven coins myself and offer up the tale each one in exchange for your good
company and a shared jug of ale.
Regards,
Capt. Lockjaw Jane
Sue D’onym,
Normally, I am a big fan of your column, “A Little Birdie
Told Me.” I find myself laughing at many of the silly, libelous remarks that
you make about people. You claim that you get your information from actual
sources so it isn’t like you just make this stuff up. You claim that you
actually consider the sources before you print anything to prevent a bunch of
liars from feeding you nonsense that no one will even believe.
In the December edition, I couldn’t help noticing some
exaggeration and assumptions that you made that were outright libelous and
incorrect, no matter who your sources are.
I love to read what you say about the Black Forest every
edition! That always gets me laughing! I especially enjoyed the last issue when
you threw in that extra liane, “They have been helping ... free of charge.”
What a hoot! You are a marvel at comical words!
However, I was upset when you said, “(Black Forest’s) good
will was offset by the knowledge that they have sworn allegiance to a vampire
in Moria by the name of Kymber Dion. And not a single one of them are vampire
charmed to her!” I leaned back in my chair, and for the first time reading your
article about BF, I did not laugh at it. Sue D’onym, you don’t know what
happened there. Whoever your sources are, they’re wrong.
First of all, your use of “they” is an unfair assumption.
Only one member of BF swore allegiance to her and that person is no longer a
part of BF because of this. Others were indeed Vampire charmed and/or
enslaved to her. You can ask many to prove this. These charmed and enslaved
ones attacked their friends, other members of BF. I know for fact, that all of
BF hate Kymber and want to see her permanently dead for what she did to some of
them. Why even his excellency, Baron Morgasander, knows the details and ordered
BF to correct the problems with their friend or else. BF complied; that person
was cured of vampirism and was summarily removed from BF.
Sue D’onym, I will continue to be a supporter of your column,
despite the errors made here. In the future, if you want dirt on the very
comical BF team, I would be more than happy to tell you anything you need or
want to know about them for I am one who hates lies based on assumptions and
false leads. Come visit me in the Flagon in Ashbury sometime, and I’ll tell you
what Luigi, Perwin, and Gilwing whisper while asleep sometimes! You’ll split
your sides!
In search of
truth with nothing to hide,
Derrek Dreamweaver (senior-most member who
wears the original Mud and Blood of Black Forest)
Mahir Muhtadi Haytham Hasim U’day Rasul of the Desert Long:
Thank you very much for your letter (as printed in the
previous Ashbury Times). Although I was a little surprised to see a
personal letter to me printed in a public paper, I appreciate your efforts to
communicate to me in a public forum regarding these matters which are so
important to you.
You write “Where were you, O great hunter, when the citizens
of this town fought tirelessly to make sure the town is safe for the innocent
this gathering?” I am glad you have asked this question, as it brings up an
important point and some questions I also have for you.
To answer simply, instead of staying and fighting hoards of
fae-touched undead chaos nightmare elemental mutant gnollnaga dragonlichlings
that swarm around Ashbury city every single year at this time due to
unstoppable cosmic forces, I was traveling in a boat to my home land. I
returned to my home land to swear fealty to the land of my Kings and Queens
while standing there in person. Two moons ago, I was commanded to return home
“as soon as possible” by the direct order of those Kings and Queens. By being
imbued with this title in this proper way, I will be better able to bring an
agreement to the Three Kingdoms and Icenia. My primary purpose in Ashbury is to
write this agreement with the nobles of Icenia.
Of course, when I am in Ashbury, I do what I can to help with
all the problems, so many that I realize I’ve quite lost track. I helped with
the Gnoll Prophecy problem. Your brother Ieukamariyn might have something to
say about that. You might ask him about it.
Now, here are my questions for you. Where were you, O great
hunter, when the citizens of this town fought tirelessly to make sure the town
was safe for the innocent during the times of those problems? Furthermore, what
do you do to stop those problems at their root? How well do you understand the
cause and solution to those problems?
You next write, “Probably making infinitesimal speeches and
trying to make yourself feel like the proud warrior you think you are.” In
fact, I have never made a speech at all in my entire life. I have written, and
will continue to write, letters such as this one. I have also written essays. I
have transcribed some books. I have made a lot of music. You can find all of
those things at the Sage’s guild and the tavern in Ashbury. But, I have never
made a speech.
Then, you write, “It’s funny how supposed necromancers are
vanquishing undead and defeating those who cast the foul magic.” I do not find
this funny. I believe that something may be funny to one being, but not funny
to another, at the same time. To you, this may be funny. When members of your
family call upon chaos, it is not funny to me at all. It rips my heart into
pieces. It turns my eyes to salt. You are not “supposed necromancers.” Your
family contains actual necromancers. If you go up to your brother and ask “is
it wrong to call upon chaos to cause mortal wounds?” He will say, “no, not at
all, that is perfectly acceptable battle magic.” This is necromancy. The fact
that he will quickly add “but we do not tolerate the creation of undead” is
irrelevant.
Imagine stirring dung into your food and eating it claiming
“there’s some food in there, so it’s edible.” Once the dung is added, the food
is made irrelevant. To say “I and my ancestors have always mixed dung with our
food, it is our way of life and I stand against any who oppose it,” does not
make the dung go away. To say “Only some of my brothers and sisters are allowed
to do the dung mixing,” also matters little. To say “We drink nice clean
water,” is good, but doesn’t change the fact about the dung. To say “Dung is
natural, there’s nothing wrong with eating it,” is clearly wrong. To say “Some
dung is dung, and some dung is food,” is also plainly an error.
Then you write, “Next time you decide that your words would
be in the best interest of the ones who are listening, make sure you are
prepared to face the consequences.” Please rest assured that I am completely
ready to accept the consequences of absolutely anything that I write. Also, if
I did not think a thing was interesting, I would not write about it.
This brings me to your final statement. “The pride will be
waiting.” Waiting for what? Is this some kind of a threat? If it is, please get
in line. I would prefer it if you could make your “Oasi Pride” problem come
after the “Gnoll Prophecy” problem, but I understand that by making yourself a
problem, you free yourself from responsibility to behave in an orderly fashion
with others. All I know of “the pride” is what your brother Muhktar wrote in
his last letter (although I do not think he knows how to write, so this may not
be exactly his words).
“The Pride is to defend all of our kind. The pride is to make
us all, strong as a people again. All Gorbe, all animal kin. To be of the Rage
and the Hunt together, and have no fear of hurting others who do not know or
misunderstand your and our ways. Blade and claw, spell and globe, mind life and
spirit, all this to defend all of us, and all of you. To be strong as one, To
be hunters as one, To be a Pride. Where in this do you find fault Kuwo?”
Actually, upon reading this the first time, I was tempted to
reply with a very short letter as follows.
“I find fault with this at exactly the point where your
brothers and sisters call upon chaos to cause wounds in the living.”
If your pride accepts calling on chaos for any reason, if
your pride uses a public forum to call me a self-righteous coward for not
spending every moment of my life in Ashbury, if your pride waits for me — hunts
me — because of what I write, and if in response all I do is write a letter
such as this, trying very hard to convince you and your pride to stop stirring
dung into your food, who is wiser? I have sacrificed a carefree life of music,
travel, and learning to nourish hope and life for all innocent beings on three
continents. You write self-righteous little jabs at me as if your help and my
absence in Ashbury on last moon makes you and your family somehow objectively
and wholly better then I and my kingdoms. You publish this in the newspaper as
if your letter will make this “fact” clear to all once and finally. Who do you
think is fooled? What do you seek to gain?
I am Lord Kuwo Mushtee.
