Undead Panselore Attacks Ashbury

by Oliver Nirab

Early in the month of Dragon the foul genhorde Pansalore attacked Ashbury city.

As many know, Pansalore is an undead barbarian who was once a follower of Mourna the liche. Mourna was contantly attacking Ashbury and proclaiming herself as duchess, and now Pansalore follows in her footsteps. He now claims to be the rightful duke of Ashbury, and has assigned his chief minions as Ashbury’s "barons." Wherever he goes, he forces Ashbans to bow to him and his minions and defer to them as if they were actually noble beings and not undead monstrosities. To Pansalore’s credit, if an Ashban submits to his will, the foul being generally does not harm them.

Pansalore was last seen during the late days of 602 when, combined with his large force of undead and the disappearance of most of Ashbury’s adventurers, he was able to capture the capital city. Ducal forces led by then-Sirs Frost and Morgasander forced him and his undead out within weeks.

Apparently Pansalore had spent his time building a small keep outside of town and gathering undead for another assault on Ashbury. His undead had located a remote area and had begun assembling a group of buildings. In order to do so, they collected building materials from local construction sites, much to the anger of Milo the foreman. Many of the undead were destroyed as they carried away the wood, and adventurers even had the wood identified in the Mage’s Guild to see if there was anything special about it (there wasn’t).

Then one afternoon Panselore marched on the capital. He was met by the adventurers of Ashbury, led by Baron Talin Gildenlily of Blythedale and Baroness Glenduria Goodberry of the Ash Forest.

Pansalore demanded that the Ashbans submit to his rule as duke and announced that undead were to be treated as full citizens, and that necromancy was legal. He further ordered the adventurers to turn over any nobles present for execution. Baron Talin gave the only response necessary to his demands: "Charge!"

The fierce attack seemed to catch Pansalore off guard, and his undead rapidly fell. With only a handful of undead left, Pansalore retreated to the near empty Dragon’s Flagon to make his stand. Unfortunately, Glorianna Wyndancer was within preparing that night’s feast.

At the sight of the undead coming into the tavern she burst forth from the kitchen casting an Earth Storm. She was quickly overwhelmed and struck down, but not before she had slain four of the undead. Sadly, in spite of several attempts to cast Life spells through a window and several pushes through Pansalore’s forces, Glorianna was forced to resurrect.

Ultimately, Pansalore’s minions were whittled down, and a successful push was made into the tavern. Pansalore and his remaining undead did not last long under the onslaught and were slain. Lord Du’gaul of the Ash Forest and Lord Find’rth T’Varian of Tarzaterranzan led the charge against the undead, with Lord Find’rth felling both Pansalore and the diamond golem known as "The Harvester."

Later in the evening what was described as a spectral gnoll appeared to Osrick and Lauroc DeWyverhaus. It claimed that it knew the whereabouts of Pansalore’s spirit bottle, and was willing to show the Ashbans. The two warily followed the creature deep into the woods where they indeed found a bottle in a Circle of Power, guarded by only four spectral undead. Around the bottle was the keep being built by Panselore.

Lauroc and Osrick immediately went back to town and informed the nobles of the situation. A plan was immediately assembled. The adventurers had two Destroy ritual scrolls at their disposal. The first would be used on the Circle protecting Pansalore’s bottle, at which point the bottle would be brought to town and secured behind a Ward. Once the bottle was safely secured the second Destroy ritual would be used on the bottle itself.

Led by the baronesses, as well as Sir Eros and Lord Jonathan, the Ashbans made their way to the site of the bottle and quickly destroyed the guardian undead.

Lauroc erected a Circle of Power of his own and began the ritual. Unfortunately the magic got away from Lauroc and the ritual failed, though neither he nor those brave enough to stand in the circle with him were harmed by the backlash.

The Black Forest Mercenary Company offered to return to town to procure their Destroy scroll, figuring that Sir Eros’ recently acquired Obliterate scroll could be applied to Pansalore’s bottle so that the expedition was not a total loss. Unfortunately, the Black Forest instead ran headlong into Pansalore, who had at that moment attacked Ashbury again.

Calling for the rest of Ashbury’s forces, the mercenaries bravely held Pansalore’s undead at bay until they arrived. The battle was incredibly difficult, and at one point the Ashbans were almost completely surrounded by the undead.

Four brave adventurers lost their lives in the fight, including Osrick and Kier. Ultimately though, Pansalore’s minions were defeated and the beast himself was slain. The Harvester was once again dispatched by Lord Find’rth and Pansalore himself was prisoned and then destroyed by Nym of House Ryujima.

The second ritual scroll was retrieved and haste was made to the site of the bottle. Unfortunately, when the adventurers reached the circle, the bottle was gone. Panselore had apparently reformed at his bottle and had removed it and left for parts unknown. The sarr Tithraq scouted about the area, but found nothing.

Though the opportunity to permanently destroy Pansalore’s bottle was missed, citizens of Ashbury can take heart that Pansalore was slain twice during his attacks, bringing the foul creature that much closer to permanent death.

Envoy from Brittington Comes to Ashbury

An official envoy from the Duchy of Brittington arrived in the Dragon’s Flagon recently. Led by Baron Blaek Forderick, the envoy dined at the noble table and met and spoke at length with Baron Talin, Baroness Glenduira, Lord Du’Gaul and Lord Jonathan.

Brittington is situated to the northeast of Ashbury, to the east of the duchy of Falkirk. It consists of four baronies: Dunkalee, Forderick, Romwing, and Widowcroft. The lower reaches of Dunkalee border the northeast corner of Blythedale.

Baron Blaek informed the Ashbans that he was ordered by his liege, Duke Broomis Bouchard, to act as ambassador between the two duchies. In addition to meeting the nobles, he spoke with several townsfolk, and read a bit of Ashbury’s history and customs in the Sage’s Guild. The Baron was also seen to spend some time conversing with Lord Find’rth of Tarzaterranzan.

Baron Blaek also expressed interest in the annual Tournament and stated that he hoped to assemble a team to compete against the Ashbans.

During the Pansalore attacks, he was eager to aid the Ashbans, and fought hard and bravely alongside the other citizens.

Apparently Duke Broomis does not require his nobles to wear a sign of nobility as Duke Frost does. Baron Blaek’s standard is blue and brown with the image of a fox upon it. Ashbans are required to bow before and obey Baron Blaek as they would an Ashbury baron.

Sarr Nobility Visit Ashbury Seeking Aid

Since the return of the adventurers of Ashbury from the future, one of their main goals has been to prevent the further weakening of the sarr nations through civil war which would allow the gnolls to come to power under their leader Gnashtooth.

According to the adventurers, the beginnings of the process already took place when Queen Nikwik of Bobthitet married the outlaw Prince Utclag from Junjeq last year.

To attempt to prevent the further decline and in fighting of the sarr nations, Kuwo Mushtee, Lhasa Skamar and Lord Jonathan Dragonhart Vardik undertook a journey south to warn them of upcoming events and encourage them to unite to face the coming gnoll threat. Several of the sarr monarchs agreed to travel to Ashbury begin talks to that end.

In the early days of Dragon, King Bobtet and Queen Redtet of Ukmutznif, King Ezeghoq of Darclag, and King Zutclag of Junjeq all traveled to Ashbury to begin the talks.

They met with many of Ashbury’s nobles, and spoke at great length with Kuwo and Lhasa, who seem to have become the unofficial ambassadors between the delegations and the duchy.

As some Ashbans may know, King Zutclag’s son Utclag tried to poison him to take control of Junjeq a few years ago. If it weren’t for the efforts spearheaded by Saja and Rasq Darkmoon to find a cure for the poison, the monarch would surely have died. In gratitude, King Zutclag outlawed necromancy and slavery in his kingdom. This made Junjeq the only nation to have had any friendly contact with Ashbury.

The other sarr nations sought similar friendly contact, but were assured that such relations would not be forthcoming as long as slavery and necromancy were allowed in the countries.

King Ezeghoq explained that during his reign he made the raising of the dead strictly illegal in Ukmutznif, and that other necromantic spells were only allowed in cases of last resort. The Ashbans applauded his effort, but explained that Ashbury would not ally with a nation that allowed any necromancy for any reason.

All of the sarr nobles seemed unwilling to work with each other to a great degree, but it was apparent that by presenting them with a copy of the "future history" they were convinced that something had to be done in concert.

Attempts were made to disrupt the delegation however.

On Sunday, word came that several ships had landed in Dockside and a force was marching towards the capital.

The assembled Ashbans marched towards the oncoming attackers. It turned out to be a mixed army of sarr, humans, gnolls and undead. Their leader identified himself as Zuk of Bobthitet, and demanded in the name of Queen Nikwik that King Zutclag be surrendered to him for war crimes. The Ashbans refused, and the mixed forces attacked.

The fighting was difficult, as more and more reinforcements marched in from Dockside, but in the end the army was soundly defeated.

A sarr had been captured for questioning, but when Zuk realized the fight was lost, he offered to trade himself if the Ashbans would release his soldier. The soldier was released and the general was taken into custody.

Though no official treaties were signed or alliances made with the sarr nations, the first step of diplomacy to bring peace to the war ravaged region has been made.

"People shouldn’t expect an immediate result," says Regent Kirsten of the Bardic College. "These sorts of diplomatic resolutions take time. Especially when there are such cultural differences between the nations involved. Not to mention the bad blood of decades of war."

Petitioners Want Necromancy to be Legal

Should necromancy be made legal? Of course not, say the majority of Ashbans (and all of the nobility). However, should talking about making necromancy legal be illegal?

A group of supporters for legalizing necromancy recently attempted to circulate a petition for their cause. They went to speak to Their Excellencies Baronesses Talin and Glen, but their words didn’t get very far before they were attacked by Lord Jonathan and others.

The three petitioners were immediately brought to Sir Eros, who questioned Lord Jonathan about his actions. Both Lord Jonathan and Baroness Talin insisted that the three were guilty of at least conspiracy to commit necromancy, but Sir Eros disagreed.

"It is not yet illegal to merely advocate unpopular opinions," he stated. He obviously disliked the three petitioners and advised them strongly that they should get out of town and never advocate necromancy again. He then allowed them to leave. The three however returned a few days later and reported that they had been killed and forced to resurrect. They led Sir Eros and the courts of the Ash Forest and Blythedale to the Black Forest home, where the three identified Redcloud as the person who killed them.

Under questioning, the elf Redcloud stated that the three had advocated the use of necromancy so he took them down.

Sir Eros was obviously upset, and pointed out that Redcloud had no right to dispense justice, and that he considered this murder.

However, the Baronesses then took him aside and spoke to him privately and apparently pointed out that Redcloud had done nothing more than they had done earlier. Sir Eros disagreed, saying that the Baronesses had immediately turned the three over to him for a trial, which Redcloud had not done.

Eventually, Sir Eros fined Redcloud and warned him never to do that again. He did not look too happy with that decision and has been heard to say that his leniency in the matter was a mistake he now regrets.

There was then a long debate over what to do with the three petitioners. They mentioned that they were part of a larger group trying to make necromancy legal but that they personally have never cast necromancy themselves. An investigation into this group has begun.

Sir Eros stated that as long as he had a say in the matter, he would never make holding an opinion into an illegal act. "I do not want to censor the people of Ashbury," he stated. "I understand that many of the adventurers of Ashbury have already lived through a period where that was the case," he said, referring to the "future timeline."

He also pointed out that there was no law against stupidity, adding that trying to convince elven nobles to make necromancy legal is about as stupid as you can get.

Crix Appears in Ashbury

The strange black cloud known only as the Crix has appeared in Ashbury again.

It had been in Galanthia as recently as last month, but for reasons unknown it has returned to Ashbury and attacked the capital city.

The adventurers of Ashbury attempted to fight the cloud. Lieutenant Glantri of the Windwalkers was able to hold the Crix back for a time until he and others were absorbed by the cloud and forced to resurrect.

Upon resurrecting Glantri found, to his apparent surprise, that a small stone was spirit linked to him. Cedric Fruvous performed a Lore ritual upon him and determined that indeed it was one of the Rhi-Artan stones.

The following day Baron Morgasander held a gathering in the Dragon’s Flagon to discuss the tactics of the Crix, and to give advice on how to effectively fight it. He warned those who were not combatants to flee from the cloud at all costs.

It was soon after that Baron Morgasander named Glantri as his squire for his heroic deeds.

As is well known, Baron Morgasander leads the force known as the Windwalkers, who are dedicated to fighting the Crix. Anyone wishing to join should speak with him or Squire Glantri.

10th Annual Ducal Tournament to be Held

The Tenth Annual Ashbury Tournament will be held on the last weekend of the month and looks to be an exciting event. The competition is open to all, noble and commoner alike, in groups of six.

A team gets one silver noble per team member for every point they receive in the Tournament, so it is clear that a winning team can turn quite a tidy profit.

A first place win in one category, worth five points, is thus worth three gold. There are nine competitions, so a team could conceivably earn 27 gold nobles. Even a team coming in 5th place in every event can still earn four and a half gold pieces without having to exert itself.

In addition, the teams win a pouch full of supplies, as well as possible suits of armor, weapons, or magical items. In previous years, magical swords have even be provided as prizes.

King Gareth apMoire has announced that he intends to attend and help judge the competition, and the entire duchy is hoping that nothing in his schedule will prevent this. Duke Frost Vardik will be sure to want to present the best of Ashbury to his liege.

Duchess Dara will also once again be choosing a "champion" at the conclusion of the Tournament. "It will be someone who is not necessarily a winner of every event," said Her Grace, "but someone who is fair, honorable, and who shows themselves well during the competition." The winner will have the title of Duchess’ Champion until the next tournament and will have the honor of wearing a favor from Her Grace.

It is rumored that a delegation from the duchy of Brittington will be competing, and there are also reports that travelers from the mists will also be in competition.

Last year’s winners Nordenn, led by Baron Morgasander, is expected to once again enter. Glantri was named Duchess’ Champion, and is sure to try to once again gain that honor.

A team known as The Uncommon Commoners, led by Roger Cartwright, managed to come in second place while coming almost last in every combat competition.

In third place last year was the barony of the Ash Forest, in a team led by Baroness Glen. It is assumed that she will once again host a team, especially since she now has nobles on her court.

The Tournament is open to everyone, citizen or visitor alike, and is always a time of great celebration and revelry. The first competition is on Saturday morning and the final competition is late on Sunday afternoon, so those who must travel may still participate.

As usual, Sir Eros will be overseeing the Tournament.

Rules for the Tournament are available in a treatise written by former Ashbury Times editor Eric Woolcott. The article is publicly available in most learned libraries and the Sage’s Guild, along with advice on how to win each one.

There are nine competitions in total which seek to test all sorts of skills, including teamwork. Since the scores are generated per each competition, it is entirely possible to win the Tournament without ever winning any of the individual contests. The Tournament was designed this way in order to encourage teamwork and cooperation. A well rounded team will always do much better than one that excels in only one or two areas.

Archery: In this competition, one team member competes to get the bulls-eye more than his or her competitors.

Colors: This is the opening ceremony in which the teams present themselves to the Duke, introduce each team member, and show off their bearing, their finest clothing, their banners, and other displays.

Combat: In this, each team presents three fighters who compete against another team using padded weapons. This is a round robin competition in which each team will compete against each other team at least once.

Entertainment: Here, the team has approximately five minutes to tell a story, perform a skit, sing a song, or otherwise entertain the audience.

Hero’s Battle: This is a one-on-one battle performed in the same manner as the Combat Tournament.

Hunt: In this competition, the team has to produce a number of items before the other teams — assuming they can figure out what the items are in the first place.

Race: This is an exciting relay race in which four of the team members compete against the other teams.

Riddles: This could include puzzles and other mind games as well as riddles, and all six members should participate.

Spellcaster’s Battle: One spellcaster from each team will meet on the field and the last one standing is the winner. No harming spells or 9th level spells are allowed, and no magical items, potions, or scrolls are allowed to be used once the competition begins.

Faces Seen Underwater

Many sailors have recently told wild stories of sea monsters and hearing sounds of battle while navigating the tip of South Point. Recently sailors have been stating that they can see faces under the water looking up at them as they pass by. One sailor described them as hideous monsters and vowed never to return to the sea. The stories on what these faces look like are conflicting. Most describe the monsters as ten-foot tall howl bear creatures with large tentacles. It is said that these creatures have pulled sailors into the deep but this report cannot be confirmed or denied.

Gnolls Encountered in Ash Forest

Recent reports of gnolls being seen in the outlying areas surrounding the Ash Forest maybe based on gnoll hunting parties being more active during the spring months. Recently however, on a routine patrol, a small brigade of the Phoenix Guard encountered a large gnoll encampment . Lieutenant Forsythe Sandres commanded the forces into battle against the gnolls once he deemed their position advantageous, and after brief fighting the gnolls were driven off, although few were actually forced to resurrect during the battle. They tried to track the gnolls through the outlying areas of the Forest, but with little success. The aid of Amani Rangers has now been enlisted, and it is hoped that the gnoll swill soon be found.

Letter to the Editor

People of Ashbury,

I would like to thank you all for your assistance in the battle against the tainted minions of my son, Utclag, and his wife, Nikwik. Without your help they would not have been vanquished. The graciousness of all the people of Ashbury, not just their nobles, was shown in your acceptance of my fellow sovereigns, regardless of the degradations that they permit to occur in their lands. Though my feelings of gratitude extend to all the gathered peoples of Ashbury, they must fall upon some individuals in greater amounts than upon others. Kuwo Mushtee and Lhasa Skamar both of you are welcome in my lands and have my gratitude henceforth.

 Zutclag

 King of Junjeq

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D'Onym

And now for the latest News They Don’t Want You To Know!

It’s springtime once again, and as the season dictates, it seems that love is in the air! Well, it was, literally, when both Her Excellency Baron Talin and her court member Daralassia were pelted with Love poisons by a gypsy in “love golem” form. While the Baroness escaped unharmed, poor Daralassia has been seen sighing and pining away for the very assailant who charmed her. Her long-time companion, Rori, must be infuriated!

Other lovey sightings include Aria, who was seen snuggling closely in the cold with Cuar, the young kiergani, as well as Iqmoks and Behrhen.

It seems that the cold snap didn’t serve to chill spring fevers, save a few. No wedding bells will be ringing for Lord Jonathan Dragonhart and his on-again-off-again fiance, Kheritanna. Seems that she has decided to “study her family ways” and has left on a journey. If the pattern holds, expect the two to announce their engagement again in three years.

It seems that Baron Morgasander couldn’t care less that Glantri became (or is it “will become”?) a terrible despot in the future? He squired the fellow recently. The choice to do so in front of all the adventurers who spent a year in a life and death struggle against him probably wasn’t the brightest political move.

Glorianna, who is not only a great cook (who donates most of her profits to local orphanages) but also an accomplished ritual caster, had an interesting time recently. She recently spent hours doing a number of rituals for Sparticous. Then, on the final ritual which would make the item permanent, there was a backlash! Fortunately, the backlash was advantageous! I’m sure many more will be knocking on her door now asking for ritual castings.

Speaking of Glorianna, it seems that she and Shya (both members of the court of Nordenn) aren’t making many friends with the other noble courts. For some reason, Baronesses Glen and Talin have a problem with the Black Forest Mercenary Group hanging around the noble quarters and being the “personal guests” of Nordenn. And here I thought that with all new barons the noble courts of Ashbury would get along.

Speaking of the BFMC, during the fight with Pansolore when the Black Forest was ambushed and the town came running to help, Talin lost her the magic mace which has a been a topic of debate about the ownship thereof. It was BFMC member Paythin Allderin that found and returned the mace to Talin. He was overheard saying later to someone “We will get the mace back in the honorable way and show the nobles that we are above the expectation that they have put on us.” Some have said that Paythin wishes to eventually become a squire and follow the path of nobility, but others say that as long as he associates with the Black Forest, that is unlikely to happen.

And speaking of the “Mud and Blood” it seems that some members of Glory Road have joined up, giving the BFMC a new attitude. The BFMC is doing its best to clean up its image and it is hoped that these new additions will serve that end. But then what shall I write about?

Gilwing, meanwhile, proved his worth once again as a master gambler when he easily routed both fellow BFMC member Drak and Lord Jonathan in a high stakes poker tournament sponsored by the Duke. The game started late one night, was interuppted by the attack against Panselore, and picked up again afterwards, ending around 5 in the morning. Gilwing came out of it with about 30 gold, a ritual scroll, and a magic item.

Lauric may be in trouble; it seems the Mastermind was able to break into the Healer’s Guild and steal a necromantic ritual scroll. Wait a minute—a necromantic scroll in the Healer’s Guild? Oh, I am sure it was just there to be destroyed ... right?

Dark elf Jaquari was overheard talking to Sir Eros about the issue of bowing. Apparently the dark elves don’t feel that they should have to bow in the same manner as every other commoner in Ashbury and want special treatment. Could this be a sticking point in the possible treaty between the two nations?

Kuwo is miffed at the nobles of Ashbury by their seeming uninterest in stopping the gnolls. I’m sure the nobility will disagree with Kuwo’s assessment, but then again everyone has their own priorities now, don’t they?

That’s all the room I have this month! I appreciate everyone who submitted information to me. If you didn’t see your name here (or your enemies’ names) it is probably because you didn’t write to me. See you next month and until then, remember—if you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
