Mayhem in the Prelude Hours of the Treaty Talks

Early on the evening of a recent Friday, the scattered remnants of bloodied Ashbury soldiers broken by the armies of the Blackbourne Compact stumbled into the Dragon’s Flagon tavern in search of the nobles. They were followed by weary refugees from the Tower Hills estate.

Panic gripped the common room of the tavern until Duke Aramis called for quiet and order. Then he instructed one of the soldiers to calmly report the current situation.

In a panting voice, the exhausted soldier told all gathered that Requin Drager’s army had launched a second massive attack against the defensive shield of the Ashbury forces in the Tower Hills. This assault overwhelmed the duchy troops and scattered them to the wind and that and entire force of five to six thousand enemy troops was on their way to the capital…with nothing to stop them. It was estimated that they would arrive by midnight.

His Grace immediately called for the preparations for the defense of the capital. Duke Aramis was confused by Requin’s assault, not understanding why the usurper, after last year’s sound thrashing, would try again. His Grace assured everyone that the Watch Stone of Ashbury would rise and destroy the majority of the invading body.

Suddenly, the candles blew out and the tavern was cast into blackness, save for the dancing flames of the hearth. Two of the black spirits that have been sighted across the duchy manifested in the darkness and began their sibilant mockery and bleak predictions. This time, however, they touched random citizens, causing them to phase out and become intangible. They could be seen but not heard.

Apparently, the “phased” adventurers could see our world, but could not affect it and only communicated with each other. Those affected were Sir Daniel Grimsby, Lady Azrael, Sir Daniel Grimsby, Tithraq, William Trafalgar and a Dominick the Gypsy.

In the dark and chaos of the situation, the unconscious form of Shya Corak materialized. Shya Corak was believed to have permanently died months ago, fighting the Geist of Shadowkeep.

Soon after, the phased adventurers were said to have been sucked into an inky void. It is said that they were taken to a terrible, dark place, empty of light and hope, and surrounded by those strange black spirits. No apparent harm was done to them.

By Midnight, His Grace hurried to the center of town and called all of Ashbury’s adventurers to arms. Requin Drager and his armies had arrived.

Duke Aramis ordered Requin to withdraw his forces from Ashbury, but of course the Count refused. His Grace then called upon the powers of Amora Fortannis through his bond with the land. But to everyone’s astonishment, nothing happened!

Requin and his troops laughed mockingly at the Duke’s failed attempt and then asked the Ashbans if they would surrender.

The heroes of Ashbury thundered back a fierce cry of, “No!”, which inspired the Duke to try again to raise the Watch Stone. Straining this time, His Grace was able to call upon the powers of Amora Fortannis and give rise to the Stone. It rose, out of the woods — a tall, flashing crystal structure the size of a large lighthouse. Eldritch lightning and flames leapt from the stone and destroyed the majority of the invading army.

The heroes of Ashbury then engaged the survivors in combat and defeated them.

Though Requin Drager failed to win the capital of the duchy, he has now conquered the Barony of Trellheim. What may happen next is subject to many theories and wonderings.

Treaty Talks Produce Mixed Results

The Treaty Talks hosted by His Grace and Barons Agnar and Jonathan were anything but peaceful and uneventful. (Baron Olin was recuperating from a bad sword cut he had obtained in a battle where no healer was available and had to wait for the wound to heal naturally; Squire Natasha was sent to represent the court of Nordenn.)

The good that came out of it was that Ashbury has managed to established an alliance with one of the new world’s indigenous kingdoms: Cuulannis. The Cuulanni ambassador and her delegation arrived on Friday evening of the treaty gathering and spoke with the Barons. They seemed an amiable group and hope was high for the possibility good relations. The next day, the Ambassador presented herself to Duke Aramis and after only a brief exchange of words and pleasantries, the alliance was made. Apparently, the people of Cuulannis had already made up their mind upon arriving in Ashbury.

The Biata negotiations were met with some confusion due to the secrecy of the race. Elders Xapano and Zandar, representing the Biata Councils of Bloodstone and Hopewell respectively, made reasonable requests and oaths of fealty in return for a treaty granting their estates as freeholds. Duke Aramis spoke with the nobles present and also summoned the Biata adventurer Shya Corak to serve as an advisor. Afterwards, His Grace announced that the requests of the Biata would be accepted upon the condition that they swear a Blood Oath. The Biata Council representatives looked a bit hesitant and disturbed by this. Shya Corak then notified the Duke that a Blood Oath is a very private affair. His Grace nodded his understanding and then asked for a public promise that the Council would meet in private with the Biata for the swearing of the Blood Oath. The Council members agreed.

Just then, trouble arrived in the form of the Emperor of Thessi and his forces. “I can’t believe that I was not invited!,” he taunted.

Prior to his appearance, the young sarr Zameen had been passing out candied eggs to all those gathered to watch or partake in the talks. Apparently the eggs had been specially treated, for when the Thessi Emperor invoked a command, those who had eaten the eggs were bent to his will, save those with the power to resist.

A fight ensued in which the Ashbans were victorious and the Thessi Emperor was taken prisoner and kept unconscious. After moments of deliberation between Baron Agnar, Sir Daniel and Duke Aramis, it was decided that the Emperor be executed upon the field, less he escape through rituals cast upon his spirit should he awake.

Lastly came the delegation from the Amani Council, Lord Gwindor and Lady Glendura. His Grace deferred to Baron Agnar and asked him to conduct the treaty talks. But the Amani Council did not appear to be all of one mind as much disagreement could be seen between the two representatives.

However, before any issues could be resolved, Teril Belayson, the leader of the radical Amani political movement known as F.O.I.L. (Free Our contImnated Land), disrupted the proceedings to voice the opinions of his organization. FOIL believes that the kiergani should be removed from the Forest as not being worthy to be part of the Forest since they are not recognized by the Spirit Tree as are the Amani. His Grace and Teril entered into a duel of words and metaphors, as fierce and spectacular as any sword fight, before Baron Agnar stepped forward and presented Belayson with the symbol of his bond to the Spirit Tree and the Ash Forest itself.

The F.O.I.L. leader looked a bit taken back and seemed about to reply when an angry mob comprised of the more violent and extreme F.O.I.L. members arrived to add further to chaos to the situation. Teril attempted to sway the mob and urged them to lower the arms and return to their homes, but to no avail. “But we are here to do you bidding!” said the leader of the group. “You said you wanted the kiergani removed from the Forest, right?” she said, with much obvious winking.

Finally believing their leader and founder to be under the effects of charm magics, the mob launched an attack. Teril himself aided His Grace and the Ashbans in bringing down the treasonous members, and they were eventually subdued, with His Grace commanded that none be slain. “They are still our people — confused and misled — but our people nonetheless.” Duke Aramis said.

As of this writing, no treaty with the Amani Council has been signed.

Liche's Hoard Auction Interrupted by. . .Liche!

On a sunny but brisk Sunday afternoon, the people of Ashbury gathered in the Liche’s Horde Trading Company building for the second auction to be held by Kazz’d Karr, the dark elf proprietor. The auction began as did the first one, with Kazz’d Karr spirit walking into his circle and then explaining the rules of the auction to the assembly. He then began the auction.

The first item was described as a granite skull that identified as unknown magic. Kazz’d explained that he had owned it for quite some time and had been unable to find out what the magic within it was. He suggested that perhaps some scholar of Ashbury might be able to succeed where he had failed. This is when things took an unforeseen turn.

A figure stepped out of a back room of the headquarters and cast a circle of power. It then quite confidently stated that it knew what the skull did and activated the skull from across the room. Kazz’d dropped the skull and fell to the ground in pain. He crawled into his circle. When he arose, he bore the pale countenance of an undead.

The figure in the circle of power then apparently controlled Kazz’d and gave him several commands. The undead abomination was later identified by Kazz’d as Arantios the liche, from whom Kazz’d had relieved of his horde hundreds of years earlier.

Arantios was not alone, and scores of undead arrived to do his bidding. A hard fought battle ensued. Arantios kept Kazz’d Karr at his side and forced the dark elf to fight against the town. Kazz’d pleaded for the town to dispatch him from his undead form even while throwing powerful magics and gasses into the crowd at the liche’s command.

The battle lasted for quite some time. At one point, a newer adventurer that had been disarmed of his weapon was chased away from the battle by an undead, but Baron Agnar came to his aid and rescued him from certain death.

The liche Arantios threw a seemingly inexhaustible supply of necromancy, while Kazz’d Karr dodged an incredible amount of attacks.

The liche eventually seemed to tire of the battle and spirit recalled away. Kazz’d was soon dropped by several adventurers.

Kazz’d’s undead body crumbled to dust, but he quickly regenerated as a living, breathing dark elf. He apologized to the barons and to the townsolk of Ashbury. Baron Agnar and Calis the half ogre both attempted to return several items that had been taken from Kazz’d before he regenerated, but Kazz’d told them to keep the items for their honesty.

The auction itself was cancelled, as Kazz’d Karr was quite shaken by his brief unlife and regeneration.

Galanthians Capture Ashbans as Slaves

Several individuals escaping across battle lines from Galanthian held territory have told many of the harsh conditions within Galanthian slave camps. The Galathians apparently lack food, supplies, and basic resources and are harshly putting down attempts to resist among captured Ashbans.

The Galanthians apparently seem to be working with Requin Drager’s “Blackborne Compact” but rumors indicate disputes between these two evil allies. Escapees state that there are rumors of a slave uprising somewhere inside Galanthia in a place called “The Delta.” Most of this information has not been confirmed but sources seem reliable.

Nearly 5,000 Ashbans are said to be held in captivity and many have been dragged south by slave caravans. Their future is unknown but it is unlikely the Duchy can mount an attack to free them.

Various Healers’ Guilds across the Duchy have set up stations where information about lost family members can be shared and obtained. The local group known as the Raven, which was primarily known as a slavery fighting organization, has begun fundraising and recruiting to help free whatever slaves can be freed.

Prophecy Tells of "Awakened Rulers"

Dragons falling from the sky to die with cryptic last words of “The magic is leaving the world.” Livestock showing signs that they are deteoriating. Water supplies becoming tainted. Black spirits prowling the land and driving parts of the populace mad.

Something is happening to Ashbury. . .to the very land of the duchy. Something sinister is seeping into the land’s natural energies. . .something said to have come from a strange place called Amora Dun.

And it all has something to do with yet another prophecy come to light:

The Prophecy of the Awakened Rulers
When the black womb of darkness opens,
an evil primeval shall slip free.
Ancient fingers, foul and twisted,
shall reach for the throat of the world.
And in this terrible, strangling grip
the Light shall begin to die.
Ancient claws, rancorous and vile,
shall dig into the rich veins of Fortannis
and magic shall bleed away from the world
till all is cold and still.
Look to awaken the Goodly King and Queen Whom Sleep
if you seek to stem the tide of blackness!
Awaken the Goodly King and Queen Whom Sleep
for they are the keys to the restoration of magic!
Awaken the Goodly King and Queen Whom Sleep!
In the purity of their heart lies the power of Hope
that shall fortify Amora Fortannis against Evil’s loathsome workings.
Call to the Lady of the Enchanted Mists
A Raid must be made into the Faery Mists
and lead by those of artistic spirit
and protected by those good and brave.
Arrive at Sovereignty
and let the artists read the Ancient Verse.
Only then shall Royalty In Slumber stir
Only then can Life survive

What can it all mean? For answers, the adventurers of Ashbury ventured into the very heart of Amora Fortannis. How did they get there? Sources say by a perilous and strange journey through the Dark Part of the relam of Faerie. What they found in Amora Fortannis is yet unknown as few have been willing to speak of the adventure. The Ashbury Times will pay handsomely for accurate information.

Contest a Small Success!

by Grandmaster Tallbrow Shadyfoot

While I was a little disappointed at the turnout of the contest participants, I was thoroughly impressed with the material presented to me. I will be back again in early May hosting the Second Ducal Sanctioned Miscellaneous Guilds of Ashbury Contest. There will be a different format: all contests will be at 9 bells. However, I will not be running the Trap contest as we are still not finished with the last one! I will be there with more prizes and more fun for all, and good food for me!

This is a list of all of our talented winners (with the exception of the trap contest):

Clothing: Calis the ogre;

Jewelry: Tarquin;

Poetry: Inaque the Blythedale Werewolf;

Smithing: Inaque the Blythedale Werewolf;

Cooking: Perwin;

Art: Shya Corak's beautiful rendition of the Biata Arch;

Performing: Nathan.

Congratulations to all participants! I look forward to seeing you soon. Tell your friends!

Contest Leads to Conflict

Grandmaster Tallbrow’s trap disarming competition on the 17th of Dragon that well into the night is still not completed. Storm and D. Gadlen Chimera competed against Perwin and Tithraq.

Upon arriving at the site of the competition, all were surprised to discover that the site had been booby-trapped, and not by Tallbrow! Seeing an appropriate challenge, and in the spirit of friendly competition, they entered the building individually, clearing the traps.

After they disarming several traps, Storm became the unwitting recipient of an unfortunate boot to the head! A giant hammer that had been affixed to the ceiling came swinging down and precisely hit him. None could discern the tripwire. . .because it was powered by a live operator!

Unbeknown to the competitors, someone had been lying in wait just on the other side of the room, a hobling named McGillycuddy who, years earlier, had lost a similar competition to Tallbrow by just a single point.

The contestants were forced to defend themselves from Tallbrow’s old nemesis. Eventually they were successful, and the contest proceeded!

Perwin and Tithraq spent some time trapping the room with binding gasses and wires. After which, Storm and Gadlen went in and attempted to disarm them. They did quite well, but by the time they had finished, it was well past dawn! All agreed to continue the second half of the contest at a later date.

Tournament Rewards are Great

The Sixth Annual Ashbury Tournament will be held on the last weekend of the month and looks to be an exciting event. The competition is open to all, noble and commoner alike, in groups of six.

A team gets one silver noble per team member for every point they receive in the Tournament, and two silvers for every point they receive in the Hunt.

A first place win in one category, worth five points, is thus worth three gold. Even a team coming in 5th place in every event can still earn many gold pieces without having to exert itself.

In addition, the teams win a pocuh full of supplies, as well as possible suits of armor, weapons, or magical items.

Rules for the Tournament are available in a treatise written by Ashbury Times editor Eric Woolcott that is publicly available in most learned libraries and the Sage’s Guild, along with advice on how to win each one.

In general, the competitions are:

Archery: In this competition, one team member competes to get the bulls-eye more than his or her competitors.

Colors: This is the opening ceremony in which the teams present themselves to the Duke, introduce each team member, and show off their bearing, their finest clothing, their banners, and other displays.

Combat: In this, each team presents three fighters against each other team, using padded weapons. This is a round robin competition in which each team will compete against each other team.

Entertainment: Here, the team has approximately five minutes to tell a story, perform a skit, sing a song, or otherwise entertain the audience.

Hero’s Battle: This is a one-on-one battle performed in the same manner as the Combat Tournament.

Hunt: In this competition, the team has to produce a number of items before the other teams — assuming they can figure out what the items are in the first place.

Race: This is an exciting relay race in which four of the team members compete against the other teams.

Riddles: This could include puzzles and other mind games as well as riddles, and all six members should participate.

Spellcaster’s Battle: One spellcaster from each team will meet on the field and the last one standing is the winner. No harming spells or 9th level spells are allowed, and nomagical items, potions, or scrolls are allowed to be used.

The Ducal Wedding: Advice on Deportment for the Common Folk

By Mikhail Blessed, Blessed Bonds Matrimonial Engagements Pty. Ltd.

The impending nuptials of His Grace Aramis Llyrr and Her Royal Highness the Princess Lilyth Avacar will be a time of joyous celebration for the populace of Ashbury, as all loyal citizens are included in the invitation. But just as importantly, this ceremony will fulfill solemn communal and noble obligations, and it is well for all to be aware of the part we play in the proceedings. Herein, then, is some advice culled from the four-century tradition of wedding engagements recorded and performed by the Blessed family.

The public will see the wedding couple primarily at the feast, but important rituals precede as well as post-cede this happy time. As you gather in Ashbury the previous night (14th of the Hawk, 599), know that the Peers of both the Bride and Groom will gather at the Ducal residence to swear oaths of mutual loyalty and to form a new association among themselves. This new partnership will increase bonds already formed within the feudal system of the land, and will elevate to the nobility anyone so chosen to serve. The order will be named that very evening. All citizens should be aware that anyone wearing the tabard of the newly formed order (signified by the combined sword of House Llyrr and the chalice of House Avacar) is worthy of the same respect as Knights and Dames of this duchy. These noble mysteries do not involve our participation, but already the community is directly affected.

On the following day, Saturday the 15th Hawk, the sounding of the horn will signal that the Groom is receiving gifts in the center of town. All loyal citizens and guests who wish to attend the wedding should present themselves and their gifts at this time. An exception is commonly made for entertainers and others, who arrange in advance to present their gifts during the feast that evening. The twain-hour of gift-giving traditionally runs from the eleventh hour forenoon to the first hour post: in the first hour, gifts of Water and Air are brought, while in the second hour are given those of Fire and Earth. Citizens should choose the proper form of their gift before arriving. All should give a gift that is commensurate with their station as well as their goodwill toward the wedding couple.

That evening, the highlight of the wedding ceremony arrives with a grand feast, to be held in the Dragon’s Flagon. A sumptuous and healthy meal will be laid at a buffet for all guests, whilst the wedding party is served at the central table. Citizens who wish to present gifts of entertainment and food should speak with a representative of Blessed Bonds beforehand, to smooth over the schedule. All are encouraged to hear the toasts — at times quite bawdy and rustic! — as well as to participate in contests of skill or display, to the amusement of the general public. The Handmaiden’s Toast is a central feature, as her speech is usually thought to be a mark of her breeding, humor and worth.

After the Toast, it is allowable to withdraw without giving insult to the host. Few, however, would wish to miss what follows.

After the feast comes the famous escorted trip to the home of the Bride. Guarded vigilantly by the Peers, the Groom must be kept from attempting to carry off his intended too early! Be ready to help (with a cheer of warning) prevent this tragedy brought on by youthful libido! When the wedding party reaches the Bride’s home, the Groomsman gives his speech, usually filled with humor and innuendo. This night is a rare occasion, when citizens may poke a bit of good-natured fun at their liege lords. Once the Groomsman has given the signal, the Bride and Groom are allowed together for a final bid good night and a single kiss. This is good luck for the marriage — but immediately thereafter the couple must be separated, or we risk disaster! The Peers shall draw them apart at once, and citizens should accompany them to lend aid if needed! After this moment, the two are considered married in common eyes.

The next day is the ceremony of Exchange of Rings and Vows, which the nobility regard as the true wedding. Gather at the sound of the horn and be ready to respond and act as instructed by the Celebrant — members of the Blessed Bonds organization will be present to assist you. Here, the community embraces the new couple, gives public acclamation to the relationship that exists between them, and solemnly celebrates the advancement of life, not only for them, but for all loyal beings of good will who benefit from the flowering and maturation of life itself among us.

I urge all citizens to attend the three-day event, which shall surely be engraved in the annals of wedded bliss for all time. An event to remember, and assuredly, a Blessed Bond! Should anyone have further questions regarding gifts, tradition or proper comportment during the Ducal wedding, feel free to direct your query in writing to Mikhail Blessed.

Magistrate's Report: Fighting Evil Without Cessation; Lycanthrope Law Established

by Sir Eros Clearbrook

One of the basic tenets of the Code of Chivalry is “Thou shalt make war against evil without cessation.” His Grace is a perfect embodiment of this part of the Code, and in every way I try to emulate his actions.

I wish to make it clear that the Code does not, and therefore I do not, make any distinction between evil which exists outside of the Duchy’s borders and evil which exists within.

Requin and others of his ilk make war upon all of Ashbury in a more traditional sense, yet they are hardly the only evil that exists within our fine Duchy. We must also fight against evil that takes the form of our fellow citizens.

In some ways, the inner evil is greater: A person who would take the inherent trust we have in our fellow Ashbans and use it to commit robbery, assault, or even murder are in my mind even lower than the enemies of Requin’s army, for they are destroying the very foundation upon which our Duchy is based. They do not attack our trained armies but instead prey upon the unaware innocent. They are an enemy which must be fought as great as any foreign power.

I wish for the criminal element in Ashbury to be aware, if it is not already, that I will continue to uphold the Code and I will fight evil in all its forms without compromise.

In a recent case, a citizen farmer came into town wishing to sell a valuable component he had discovered. He spoke to someone who offered him five silver for it, which the farmer refused, angrily tossing the proffered coins to the ground. The unarmed farmer then walked away and was struck down from behind. His component was stolen from him, and the farmer was then turned over to my office, with the person who took the component claiming that the farmer had stolen from him.

I spoke to both the farmer and the person who took the item, and both agreed on the facts with the exception that the person who took the item claimed that the farmer had stolen the five silver from him and had not given the item as was agreed.

Now, how would you decide a case like this? It seems obvious that if anything was stolen it was the component. It is also obvious that even if the farmer had stolen anything that the “victim” certainly did not have the right to be a judge and decide to have the component turned over to himself as compensation.

Let’s add something to this: The farmer has no criminal record and has a reputation in town of being honest (but arrogant and not very likeable), and the person who claims to be the “victim” has recently been convicted of murder and conspiracy, is known to associate with certain underworld figures, has the reputation in town of being a necromancer, and even wears a chaos symbol prominently on his forehead.

I have rarely had such an easy decision to make — yet because this person is a known and prominent adventurer who travels with a noble court, my decision has been criticized by some who travel with him. They of course would feel completely differently if the roles were reversed.

The farmer was Colin and the adventurer who assaulted him was Calis. Calis was sentenced for thievery, assault, and battery and ordered to pay a ten gold fine, which Baron Agnar agreed to pay.

As to the amount of the fine, as I stated in my Magistrate’s Report of May of 598, "I believe that a criminal’s wealth should be considered in setting a fine. The fine is supposed to hurt." I have been consistent in placing fines based on this principle; a one gold fine may make the difference between starvation and survival to a mere farmer but mean nothing to someone with Calis’ wealth (given his prominent public notices making his desire to purchase ritual components clear; notices which begin with “Looking to be Rich?”).

A second prominent case I recently dealt with involved two citizens who had become infected with a werewolves’ curse and had brutally killed other citizens while transformed. This one was much more difficult to decide.

The law clearly states that if someone is claiming in their defense that the criminal actions they had performed were done under duress such as through an Enslavement or Charm, this would not be a defense unless it was clearly shown that the enslavement or charm had taken place (through reliable witnesses). One’s mere word that one has been enslaved cannot be allowed as it would be like giving free reign for any criminal to commit any act desired and use a fake “enslavement” as a defense.

Lycanthropy, though similar, does not fall into this legal exception because it is perfectly obvious when one becomes a werebeing; it is not something you can lie about.

However, I do not wish to set a precedent that you will not be responsible for your actions while under a lycanthrope’s curse. If you know you are under such a curse, you must make every available effort to protect the citizens of Ashbury.

Inaque and Nihilus recently changed and claimed that they were controlled to commit murders in the town. Four were killed as a result of their actions, and only one received a Life spell. They were apologetic for their actions and showed remorse. I spoke with the other nobles who were present in the city at the time of the trial, and most felt that since the two did not have the requisite intent needed for a murder charge that they should be charge with manslaughter. Although I had reservations about this — the victims need to know that their attackers will face an appropriate penalty — I agreed that the circumstances in this particular case warranted that finding.

Both were fined ten gold, and were ordered to provide services to their victims for the next six months. Inaque’s Squire title was removed, and his Barony (Blythedale) was held responsible for being aware of his condition but not taking the proper precautions and were appropriately fined as well.

Because there was no previous law concerning a known lycanthrope, I will not enforce an ex post facto judgment. However, for the future, the following rules and restrictions will apply:

Anyone who is currently under such a curse must immediately:

1. Register with Guildmistress Natasha of your condition;

2. Make every possible arrangement to protect Ashbury’s citizens by sleeping behind wards, never being alone or with those who cannot stop you if you transform unexpectedly, and otherwise taking whatever steps can be taken to prevent any harm to others while in were form;

3. Place finding a cure as your top priority.

Any infected person who does not take these steps will be found guilty of murder and not manslaughter if anyone is killed as a result of their transformation. Murder has a mandatory sentence of one death for each victim.

I have heard rumors that some of those infected are using the infection as a way to learn more about lycanthropy and how it works. As of now, this will not be tolerated. You are jeopardizing the lives of your friends, as the actions of Inaque and Nihilus have shown. If it is clear that you are not making every effort to rid yourself of this curse, it will be assumed that you intend to keep the curse, and you will be completely and absolutely responsible for any harm you may cause while in lycanthrope form, whether controlled or not.

Letters

People of Ashbury,

We are beset at all sides in our effort make this new world our home. There are so many enemies it seems we would have no hope to defeating them, but hope we do have and in abundance.

Let me tell you of what I saw on a recent weekend. I saw the usurper Requin come and face us once more, and yet saw again the destruction of his forces at the hands of the Duke and the Watchstone, after our courage and valor inspired him so. I saw many of our enemies come and try to destroy our negotiations only to be yet again sent back to where they came from. Also I saw people who individually would be weak come together to form the strongest shield against evil.

The forces of Amora Dun are powerful, but only because they feed from our fear, sense of loss, and despair; but Amora Fortannis is stronger, as it represents our courage, valor and hope in our hearts.

We are a land of great heroes in the past, from Duke Oliver Songbringer to simple people who pick up pitchforks and knives in the defense of our land.

I wish to remind you of those who have fallen in the defense of these lands: Duke Bryan Nordenn, my first true liege; and squire Kador of Blythedale, whom I remember vividly reciting the Code of Chivalry in the battle which claimed him. There were Ta’wané Varados and Selina Vardik, and the golden gryphons who sacrificed their lives so that another evil would not come to pass. I also remember a dear friend, Findrago, whose bright smile used to remind that no matter what the odds were, we had the better hand that was dealt.

I find it hard that with such inspiration in our past that we could ever think that we would be defeated by anyone. So, people of Ashbury, keep courage in your hearts for we current heroes of Ashbury stand ready to defend you against all evils. Remember to keep courage and hope in your hearts, and that the most valorous people of any world are the people of Ashbury.

Loyalty to the Duke

Service to the People

Baron Jonathan Dragonhart

I would really like to know what justice really is? Please let me know cause I am very confused.

One of my closest friends and Sir Eros’ personal “pot to piss on,” (Calis) was convicted of assaulting a farmer who stole from him. Calis was charged a 10 gold fine.

On Sunday, two members of Blythedale committed murder. They made three people resurrect and personally killed me but I later received a life spell from the one and only Natasha. (Thank you Natasha.)

These murderers only received the same fine as Calis. What’s up with that? Murder and assault are the same thing? That’s what is seems like to me.

Not only this outrage but when Calis “committed this crime” Sir Eros was there and ready to do something in a flash, like he sensed something. But on Saturday night during the poker game, the hobling bandit Luvo Piper was seen in the tavern and Eros did absolutely nothing about it. I know if a noble lets a known thief go he will lose his title. Is this different for Sir Eros? I really don’t think so. Maybe he was afraid of the hobling, but no matter what he was feeling or if he had to change his shorts or not he still has an obligation to you and to me he is not living up to his word to you. I know if Calis was one of the wolves who “could not control themselves” he would have received three deaths. The main reason that Calis was convicted for the assault was because he was convicted once before. I thought once the crime was paid then that is it. Now it’s like Calis is still paying for a past crime which he did not commit.

He also said that another reason was that Calis had a chaos mark on his head and therefor could not be trusted. I think now I am going to bear one as well and I feel that everyone would to protest on Sir Eros’ bias against a mark on your head. Next thing you know he won’t like Calis cause of the bumps on the back of his head.

Duke Armis Llyrr, I feel that you should appoint a new person as your magistrate for he is not doing his job well enough. He tends to go back on his word. And I quote “You are responsible for your actions no matter what kind of control you are under.” That was told to Luigie when him and Robert Oakwood and the criminals were talking. Luigie came a victim of an amnesia and Robert said that Luigie did nothing. Sir Eros still granted him a death for that.

So now people are being “controlled” or so they say, by the moon killing people and only receiving the same sentence as some one who commits assault.

Ask around, ask the people of Ashbury and ask yourself should we have a magistrate like the one that Sir Eros is?

If I have committed a crime by saying the above the I will gladly pay the fine, which will be the same as making three people resurrect according to Sir Eros.

Gilwing,

Master Smith Champion of Kelanor the youngest

of the court of the Ash Forest

News From Around the Duchy

College: Down-on-his-luck archeologist Professor Arlow Cremdigger struck it big a few months back when he was the first to enter an Icenian ruin and find an ancient document. He attempted to sell it to the Bardic College but was not given the price he asked for. Whether the Professor will sell the Icenian document to the college remains to be seen. In what may be related news, many priceless artifacts have been stolen from the College vaults and laboratories, but there are yet no suspects as to the theft.

Dover: All Galanthian forces have retreated from their lines, drawing back into adjoining estates. The bloody stalemate in this estate has ceased. Estate forces report having had Galanthian soldiers first aid Ashbans on the battle field, and refusing to kill our troops. Commanders and officers are baffled by these actions. Several captured Garrison troops were released unharmed, also with no explanation. Reports in Southwestern Trellheim indicate that attacks by Galanthians have ceased, but tensions remain poised as if waiting for something to occur.

Entholm: A large force of ogres led by several elves once again invaded Entholm and resurrected a large portion of the estate’s population. There were a few permanent deaths. Many of the victims, before being put to the sword, were told by the elves that the Duke could have prevented this, but he would not agree to a cessation of hostilities and insisted on continuing his war.

Floris: Cattle within this estate have been found wandering about. The fences and corrals that had been keeping them in were found completely destroyed. Ranchers have been working frantically to round up the cattle and repair the fences and corrals.

Queensboro: Icenian sightings appear to be on the rise across the duchy. One adventurer of Blackthorn recently reported stumbling on an entire city crawling with cursed Icenians beneath the surface of this small town in Trellheim. How they survive is not known, but they could become very dangerous if they appear on the surface in any great number.

Wildwood: Dozens of strange blue humanoids thought to be cursed Icenians attacked with a rabid ferocity a passing trade caravan. Attacking and dragging three horses into a nearby cave, they ripped the screaming creatures apart and fed on them with a mindless hunger.

Zalinarik’s Keep: A large dragon with red and gold scales was sighted above the estate. It is surmised the dragon visited the keep of the great Dragon Mage himself. No further sightings of the dragon have occurred, but the giant Myranius Fruth was also seen in the vicinity of Zalinarik’s tree fortification. Paired with recent word that the Dragon Mage is apparently crippled from a battle with Morganna decades ago, Zalinarik seems to be marshalling forces or gathering allies.

The fifth month of the year is named the Hawk, after the creature known as the Avatar of the Air. This central month of spring denotes new life, rapid movement, the beginning of long journeys and the release of winter’s grip at last.

Unfortunately to many, the Hawk also means an increase in Chaos (which peaks in the upcoming month of the Serpent). The Hawk is a strong and fearless flier, able to stay aloft all day with little effort: his vision is unequaled among animals and he is strong in defence of his nest. The storms of spring are a hardship to many, but the Hawk is able to endure them. He is a loner and values his privacy.

The ascendant celestial sign during this month is the mysterious Shadow-Twin, which should be visible to those who watch carefully near the middle of the third week. A humanoid-shaped constellation near the horizon will dim just enough to reveal another pattern of stars behind it in startlingly similar form. The meaning of the Shadow Twin is as difficult to define as its stars are to see; generally, they signal that this month of movement, change and unexpected danger often have the characteristic of a kind of doubling, or perhaps a second generation in the lives of those it influences. As the gamblers say, “double or nothing” — but unlike the throw of the dice, the result of the Shadow-Twin’s influence, for good or ill, is not seen until much later. Or perhaps too late.

Watch the signs carefully during the coming month, for it will take a Hawk’s vision to spot the Shadow-Twin.

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

Tired of appointing squires only to see them convicted later, Baron Agnar appointed his newest squire after the squire had been convicted. The newest squire in Ashbury is the forgetful sailor named William Trafalgar (unless he changed his name again). Thankfully the Baron seems to have control over this one. During the treaty negotiations, Teril Belayson made a comment about Duke Aramis and Baron Agnar that obviously didn’t sit well with the new squire because he stepped out of the receiving line with sword drawn and gas globes ready. A quick look and a nod of the Baron’s head were all it took to send William back to the line. It is a shame the Baron wasn’t there when Robert Oakwood needed a look and a nod. All in all, I’d keep an eye on this new squire, because odds are, he’s keeping an eye on you.

Teril is upset not only by being interrupted in his racist debate with His Grace by his “followers” but also because he was not able to respond to Baron Agnar’s proof of his acceptance by the Tree. “That has nothing to do with the fact that he is a kiergani, but that he is Baron,” said Teril later. “If an ogre were Baron, it would be able to make the same claim.”

Meanwhile, the Baron gets the “Most Rolled Eyes in Disbelief” award from the commoners of Ashbury when, while talking to Sir Eros about Calis’ latest arrest, defended Calis’ actions by saying “Everybody does it. This sort of thing happens all the time.”

Speaking of William again, both he and Luigi were the last two competitors in the big Poker Tournament sponsored by the Raven. At one exciting point in the three cards hidden poker game, William tried to unnerve his opponent by never turning over his cards and betting anyway. Luigi ended up putting all the rest of his chips down, so William smiled and began turning over his cards. A two. A five. “Well, if this is a four,” he said, “I have a straight.” He turned it over. It was a four! Fortunately for Luigi however, he had a better straight so the game continued until he finally won!

During the Performance Competition, Sir Daniel was seen chatting and smiling over a bottle of wine with none other than the AMC’s own Mistress of Merchant Safety, Alanna DeNeve. One of the many gentlemen she quietly snubbed that eve said that he overheard the two discussing marriage. . . Let’s hope that they were talking about the Duke's wedding, for Sir Daniel's sake! At the same time, town “idiot” Nathan Westwind was attempting to gain Miss DeNeve’s favor as well! Seems that he grew homesick when he heard her Dockside accent and even joined the knight in escorting Alanna out of town. Perhaps now he will stop staring at Squire Talin and go after a woman with feelings.

The feathers are flying in town once again! Lady Dara Vardik came into town with a bundle and a mission one weekend: to race change Baron Jonathan. The Baron graciously declined but offered to buy the scroll from the disappointed Red Lady, who was heard saying ”Would you offer to buy the bricks from a bricklayer and build a keep yourself?” After speaking with several people, including Zatarina and Lady Dara’s friend, Shya Corak, the Baron agreed to let Lady Dara cast the ritual. Sir Frost, on the other hand, groaned like an impatient child, saying “Are you going to make me stay in a Circle for an hour again?!?”

A hobling fellow by the name of Lord Roldo has been establishing a presence in Ashbury city for the past six months or so. He says he is a noble from a land called “Home” and told any who wished to listen about how proud he was the day he bought his title. “You mean you didn’t earn it?” asked Squire Xavier. “Of course I earned it!” he answered. “I earned every copper I used to buy that position!” Home’s Code of Chivalry differs slightly from the one we are all used to, specifically with tenets like “Thou Shalt be Faithful to Thy Word Once Given in a Signed and Notarized Document.”

Well, that’s all the gossip for this month. Remember — If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
