Duke Aramis and Ducal Court Obliterated; Feared Permanently Dead

Just when it appeared that the situation for Ashbury was about to improve (see related articles), a dire and dark development occurred.

On the night of July 11th, The Order of the Black Unicorns were hosting an engagement party for His Grace Duke Aramis Llyrr and his betrothed, Princess Lilyth Avacar of the lost kingdom of Icenia. Later on into the festivities, His Grace announced that he had to respond immediately to news that a large army of Deep Trolls was moving toward the Trellheim border in the direction of the capital. Duke Aramis and Dimsdale the Jester rifted out of the tavern to gather the Ducal Court.

As the party later began to wane, Guildmistress Natasha found two soldiers of the famous Ducal Red Phoenix Company in need of resurrection in the Healer’s Guild. They resurrected successfully and were visibly shaken. The soldiers pleaded to be taken immediately to a baron or figure of authority.

Natasha took them to the tavern, where Count Requin Drager was still in attendance at the Black Unicorn party. The soldiers then began to tell their sad news to a crowd of quiet, concerned onlookers.

According to the two soldiers, the Duke and his court members had joined up with The Ducal 1st Lancer regiment in time to meet a regiment of trolls. Soon, word came of a supply caravan being set upon by a small band of raiding trolls. His Grace and the Ducal Court responded immediately, taking with them the Red Phoenix Company.

The distress call turned out to be an ambush and Duke Aramis and the Ducal Court were set upon by three companies of Deep Trolls and a dragon! During the fierce fighting that ensued, the soldiers saw Dame Bodicca crushed beneath a taloned claw of the dragon.

Then in a shaky voice, one soldier told of how the entire Court fell before the dragon and that, just before he was killed, the soldier heard the dragon call upon its massive powers of Obliteration.

An emotional moment followed as the stunned townsfolk absorbed the grave weight of the news and then Count Requin called for a moment of silence for the fallen Ducal Court.

Sir Jonathan Dragonhart rode all the remainder of the night to where His Grace was said to have fallen. Upon his arrival, Sir Jonathan was able to confirm most of the details of the soldiers’ story.

For the first few days, hope blossomed in the hearts of many in Ashbury that Duke Aramis would return. But then scouts recovered the permanently dead body of Sir Edward Valerian, member of the Ducal Court and Lord of Armies, and the people began to fear the worst. Sir Edward had been with His Grace at the time of the ambush.

General Kapazris, commander of the Ducal 1st Lancer Regiment stated, “His Grace should have resurrected and come forth by now…unless he was not able to do so. If Duke Aramis and the Court had been captured, we would have heard either gloating or ransom demands from the Deep Trolls. I do not believe the Duke was captured.”

Count Requin, Warlord of Ashbury and the next highest ranking noble, has assumed command of the Duchy, saying “It is a sad and unfortunate development, but we are still at war. We must hold together and defend the Duchy. His Grace would have wanted you all to do just that. As for the defense of the Duchy, I will bond with the land. Whoever has the Chalice of Sovereignty, I command you to bring it to me.”

The "Lost Kingdom" Returns

On the Friday night of the Duke’s disappearance, a group calling themselves the royal court of the kingdom of Icenia met with His Grace. One by one the members were introduced: King Thrombolis Avacar; his two daughters, Princess Lilyth and Princess Lydia; Sir Captain Ramierez, Protector of Princess Lilyth; and a bizarre jester who rivals Dimsdale in humor and antics.

According to King Thrombolis, he and his court emerged from the Enchanted Mists to make a treaty with Ashbury and entreat its assistance in freeing Icenia from the curse imposed upon it 300 years ago by the mad prophet, Galantri of Galanthia.

King Thrombolis spoke of a need for Duke Aramis to find the Chalice of Sovereignty and bond with the land. It was the only means by which Ashbury could survive against the vast forces of the empires that have invaded. The King spoke of how he and his kingdom was in a similar situation, and that it had survived many generations through such bonding until such time that the Chalice was lost. He had sent his knights forth to quest for the Chalice, but they failed to retrieve it, and this had led to their downfall.

The King’s words were verified when Ashen and Professor Xavier of the Order of the Black Unicorns stepped forward and produced an ancient document recovered from the ruins of an Icenian Healers’ Guild. The document was a Royal Journal of events, and it fully supported King Thrombolis’ tale.

“Bonding” apparently gives the leader of the land the ability to “see” through the lands itself and feel when invading forces and other enemies of the land were present. It is possible that bonding has other properties as well—some rumored that it allows the one bonded to actually call up the land and produce earthquakes and such—but those abilities are unconfirmed. (See accompanying article.)

During the talks, many could not help but notice that Duke Aramis’ ever-present steel discipline seem to falter and he cast admiring eyes at the lovely countenance of Princess Lilyth. Many also noticed that she cast an admiring gaze at His Grace as well.

King Thrombolis must have also taken notice of Duke Aramis’ behavior for he then proposed a political marriage between his daughter, Lilyth and His Grace.

Duke Aramis looked very nervous and asked his Magistrate, Sir Eros, for advice, figuring this was a matter both of law and love. His Grace was indeed smitten with the young Princess, but was obviously unprepared for thoughts of marriage. Sir Eros, with a huge grin, explained to the King that political marriages were a thing of the past in Ashbury, but then commented that by the look in the eyes of both involved that perhaps this marriage would have a “political” bonus.

He was then seen with Baron Agnar, Sir Jonathan and Sir Daniel speaking quietly with His Grace about the situation.

They finally broke apart and His Grace seemed skittish and was actually seen being politely pushed towards the Princess by his grinning nobles.

His Grace called upon his iron will and managed to steady himself to properly propose to the Princess. She accepted with a smile and a cheer went up.

That night, the Order of the Black Unicorns held an engagement party in the Dragon’s Flagon to celebrate the occasion which was attended by both courts.

Barons Radric and Kelial Resign

The tension between His Grace Duke Aramis Llyrr and Baron Radric Helfax, highlighted by the Baron’s challenge of Honor Combat with His Grace, came to a close earlier this month when the mighty Baron of Trellheim apologized and made peace with His Grace.

Baron Radric had objected to the paladins’ removal of the title of Sir Hanson for gross insubordination and conduct unbecoming a noble, and he had publicly protested. Hanson’s title had already been revoked in Evendarr months earlier for the same reason, and His Grace had at the time supported Sir Hanson and stood up against Evendarr’s actions.

Radric gave his resignation and informed the Duke that the former court of Trellheim planned to attempt to penetrate some of the mists surrounding the Duchy and continue on a long and vast exploratory mission.

It was said that Duke Aramis was visibly saddened by the loss of Radric as the two exchanged fond words and compliments and then embraced. Radric then left with his troops, immediately causing Ashbury’s enemies to take much of Trellheim (see related articles).

Radric thus became the fourth Trellheim Baron in a row to either be removed for committing crimes or to resign after controversy.

A few weeks later, His Grace received a formal letter from Baron Kelial. In the letter, Baron Kelial congratulated the efforts of then-Lords Jonathan Dragonhart and Daniel Grimsby and asked that they be knighted. (His Grace knighted the two immediately thereafter.) He also requested that the two knights be given till the end of the year to decide between them which one would be Kelial’s successor, apparently ignoring his earlier naming of his relative Gilcori as heir.

Kelial also announced that he was stepping down from the Blythedale baronial throne due to personal reasons that inhibited him from fully and properly meeting the responsibilities and duties required of a noble baron.

It is speculated by some Court observers that Lord Kelial’s race change to mystic wood elf had affected his personality, as that race is usually not known to aspire to or desire traditional noble positions.

Since their appointment, both Sir Daniel and Sir Jonathan have taken trips around Blythedale to attend to business left undone by Kelial and to make amends and changes in areas where they believe such should be made. These “good will” trips have been quite successful in the eyes of Blythedale citizens.

What is the Chalice of Sovereignty?

By Professor Ignaitius Flairtongue, Sage and Philosopher, Bardic College

The Duchy of Ashbury rests upon a land that is alive with a destiny-shaping power, sending forth epic summons that vibrate throughout the world and brings to its breast things both breathtaking and horrific. It calls forth the miraculous and perverse. It is a drawing place, a source where great forces and heroes come together to contend for power. Left unchecked, this power is a wild and snarling beast, uncoiling disaster after disaster. It is endowed with special properties that draw mighty forces to its heart to contend.

The land is called “Amora Fortannis,” meaning “Heart of Fate.” We now know that this Amora Fortannis extends into other worlds, for the Lost Kingdom of Icenia had once rested upon Amora Fortannis in this new world and our history and theirs are slowly being woven together.

To understand what the Chalice of Sovereignty really is, we must first discuss the concept of Land-Bonding.

The dragons seek among us those mortals who are worthy of the land bonding. These mortals shall become one with the land and be the stewards of its shaping power. Some will serve the dark while others will seek nobler causes. And these shall be bonded to the One Ruler as strands to the center of the web.

The One Ruler’s Heart shall be the ethics of the land. “The Land and its Ruler shall be one. If the Ruler fails, the land fails” states part of the Dragonheart prophecy.

The land’s essence runs through the blood of its people, their histories shaping and giving form to the land—giving identity to the land—and tended by its noble rulers. Therefore, it is imperative that each ruler bond with his or her respective land and with the One Ruler. With these caretakers set up and overseeing the day to day concerns and problems, the Dragons are free to continue with their grander design.

The secret of the Amora Fortannis Land Bonding is this: Long ago, the Dragons and the Seelie Court of the Fey forged a mystical symbol of Amora Fortannis’ heart: it was a special cup called the “Chalice of Sovereignty”—the symbol of the Rightful Authority.

The Land’s ruler was required to fill the cup with the land’s water and drink from it and thus the bond is made and the powers of Amora Fortannis would be available to the ruler, and the land would thrive.

Once there was an ancient kingdom by the name of Icenia. It was an empire that had ruled for nearly 5000 years before its fall. The empire’s early nobles ruled from within hill forts surrounded by wooden palisades. They were an artistic people, skilled in bronze crafting especially.

A small sect of wise and powerful mages made contact with the dragons of Fortannis. This sect learned that their kingdom sat upon a land with special properties called Amora Fortannis. The dragons were especially concerned with Amora Fortannis for this place would grow to become the heart of paradise. The dragons had been tending to the land as well as contending for their own ideals of paradise.

The sect of mages joined with the dragons for the purpose of destiny shaping and the Order of the Wyrm (identical to the one that came with us from Tyrra) was born, and became the Royal Mage’s Guild.

Over time, The Order helped shape Icenia and guide its rulers to be the most efficient monarchs and matriarchs possible. Icenia’s last land-bonded king was Melagar, a dragonheart of the Cu Draco faction of the Order of the Wyrm. A charismatic man and shrewd leader, Melagar drank from the Chalice of Sovereignty and bonded with the land. Icenia began to blossom and thrive. But corruption eventually rooted itself inside King Melagar and grew. He became a greedy tyrant and squeezed the ancient kingdom for all it was worth. He abused his entrusted bond with Amora Fortannis and failed as a proper Dragonheart.

The special properties of Amora Fortannis, without a proper caretaker, were slowly going out of control. The dragons were alarmed and sent champion forces of the Partisan and Mal Draco to rise up against King Melagar.

Civil war raged for a dozen years.

The king’s armies were slowly defeated and soon the rebellious forces lay siege to his fort. Just when Melagar needed the powers of Amora Fortannis the most, the Chalice failed him and revoked that which it had given the king. The fort’s defenses were breached and the rebels entered.

Melagar climbed to the top of his fort as his foes gave chase. From atop the fort’s highest tower, Melagar hurled the Chalice from the fort. As it struck the ground, the Chalice embedded itself into the earth. Melagar was killed in battle.

Rebels who saw the king toss the Chalice, but did not know what it was, reported seeing a mist suddenly form round the Chalice, till it enveloped the cup and completely hid it from sight. In moments, the mist vanished and there where the Chalice had been now stood a tall tree.

It was the only tree upon the plains for miles around. Thinking the tree belonged to the Fey, the Rebels avoided it.

Icenia, now weakened, fell prey to barbarian and orc hordes that eventually overran the kingdom. It took the Icenians 15 years to clear the kingdom of these invaders. The Order of the Wyrm, aware of the prophecy, which states that the land would eventually be wrested from the hands of barbarians and orcs, melded into the shadows and became a secretive order.

For a millennium the chalice had remained hidden. Until now, no one had been able to find it.

Galanthians Attack; Information Gained From One

Attacks across the western border of the Ducal Fiefs and southwestern Trellheim have indicated nearly 2,000 Galanthian troops are marauding and pillaging the lands of Trellheim. Attacks seem sporadic but well planned, as the Galanthian troops have laid masterful ambushes and led several dishonorable assaults on barracks. Garrisons between R’Kura and Dover have fallen as the Galanthians are pushing northeastward towards Deathwatch and Battlewoods. Dover Castle struck back, eliminating an entire platoon of Galanthian Swords of Lore, trapping them in the southern portion of the estate as Galanthians attempted to attack the local Healer’s Guild. Punishing them with missile fire and Magic Storms they successfully bottled them and killed them to a man.

Recent attacks in the city of Ashbury itself indicate that the Galanthians also possess some link to the strange mists that are being utilized with a strange alliance with the Lady of the Mists. It seems impossible to believe this kind and wondrous woman would aid a bloodthirsty craven army like the Galanthians who have exited the mists with huge dark black hounds with glowing red eyes.

The hounds fight separately from the Galanthians and themselves seem to possess a keen intelligence and cunning beyond animal intelligence. The creatures have been rumored to be able to resist magic and exude magic affects that bind and even kill.

Ashban adventurers fought several sorties of Galanthians recently, including the arrival of a dark mist attack. Fighting several small forces, the Galanthians were defeated at the hands of talented adventurers of Ashbury.

A lone stranger calling himself Xenex appeared one recent Saturday afternoon during the Galanthian attacks. Xenex bore no sigil, carried no weapon and displayed no aura, and wandered around checking people for bumps and ridges. The slightly unstable man proved to be a wealth of information on Galanthian culture, claiming to be from a city known as “Cradle.” Calling himself a “Hedge Prophet,” Xenex gave mixed prophecies reading the heads of dozens of individuals. Xenex also spoke of a country called Saribdis, a country apparently at war with Galanthian and to their south. He spoke of a great stone elven teacher who was a proponent of enlightened anarchy in the truest sense of the word: a commonwealth devoted to the removal of laws in favor of individual quest for enlightenment. He also spoke of the curses of Galantri, but relatively vaguely.

When asked why he was wandering about, Xenex claimed he wished to see the return of the Lost Kingdom. He spoke of the various factions of Galanthian succinctly, mentioning the Devora, a group dedicated to the interpretations of the ancient works of Galantri. These Devora also seem to maintain great symbols in which criminals are brought forth to determine guilt or innocence in crimes.

He informed people that Galanthia was made up of dozens of city states assembled under the banner of the emperor, each city being controlled by a “High Prophet” and dedicated to specific duties such as agriculture or mining. Xenex was not detained or killed while speaking to the citizens and nobles.

Perhaps the most frightening experience was a well laid ambush in the early afternoon of Sunday, July 12th. A farmer approached Baron Agnar and Count Requin and told of some Galanthians that he had observed that had scared off his cow, Alicia. The Warlord dispatched Nihilius and Inoquay to investigate.

Traveling silently down a road deep within the forest, they approached a small building and discovered a single Galanthian moving behind the building and observed another Galanthian lying down as “bait.” The Galanthian, clearly surprised at their presence, turned to face the two scouts and is rumored to have offered his hand in friendship before his sigil ignited as a paralyzing burst nearly struck Nihilius. Moving back to report, the scouts quickly outdistanced the Galanthians.

Later the Galanthians, watching for hidden scouts, called out an ultimatum, stating to send forth a party or they would kill six captives.

A group came forward which included Squire Azura, Inoquay, Ragnar, Nihilius, and Ulrich. They pressed forward questioning while the speaker for the Galanthians backed up. Just down the road, Sir Du’Gaul and Natasha waited to back up the adventurers if things went afoul. Two more Galanthians approached as the speaker screamed out and two hidden Swords of Lore leaped out of the dense underbrush to attack the group.

Nihilius was captured and dragged back and was believed to be Enslaved. Screams of ambush echoed as the battle was joined and the rest of the adventurers present arrived. Nihilius was struck down early in the fight defending his new master.

As the town pressed down the road they encounter traps hidden in the underbrush and dozens of Galanthians hiding within the farmer’s house. Black sigiled Galanthians hurled Deaths, while red tattooed Galanthians punished and incapacitated the Ashbans with Imprisons, Webs, and Paralysis spells. If not for the aid of a powerful yak scavenger healer, it is doubtful the casualties would have been so light.

Even within the farm house traps had been set, blowing up Rune and some treasure placed as bait.

Overwhelming the Galanthians after nearly 20 minutes of heated battle, no apparent captives were evident. Had the town not appeared in the nick of time, it is likely several customers would have appeared at the Healer’s Guild.

Trellheim Falls!

With the departure of Baron Radric and five hundred of his crack troops, and the disappearance of the Ducal Court, disheartened and harried Trellheim is a wasteland.

The estates of Suvina, Bristol, Kurash, Roderick’s Rest, Bretton, Dor-lith and Raquantri are now solidly in the hands of Galanthia. A regiment of Trellheim regulars and remnants of local Garrisons are fighting a solid defense in the estates of Battlewoods and Deathwatch, holding back the Galanthians in ferocious night fighting. Three Ducal Regiments have been dispatched and pulled from Trollsgate to send reinforcements to the beleaguered Trellheim legions fighting in western Trellheim.

Baron Radric’s adopted daughter and heir is leading a spirited resistance from the estate of Hafhym and Cinder, having been driven back from northwestern trellhiem by powerful ogres led by several elves.

Dur Namarie has clear intentions of taking Forestheart, having already occupied Bartleby, Wilmarth, Gunther’s Knee, R’kura and Dark-wood. The garrison in Capulus has disappeared without a trace, and enemy forces have been seen fighting there against an unknown force. While Capulus still stands outside of enemy hands, it is not apparent who is fighting against Dur Namarie.

Fighting within the Tower Hills is a complete swirling battle of chaos where the Sunless Empire clearly possesses the upper hand. Several regiments of trolls have attacked neighboring estates of Alegas, Linydel, Quathos, Wellspring, and Queensboro.

In a vicious attack credited to the thinking of Ingregavor, Count Requin’s assistant, Commander Roxlin Cavnor of the 12th Niman Heavy Horse (Requin’s Maulers) crushed two short regiments of troll regulars in the estate of Derek’s Forge, turning the trolls back and resurrecting over 60% of them. The Tower Hills Citadel still stands, the Black Eagle of Radric still flying in its glory in defiance of the constant trolls attacks against its walls. All seems quiet in Trollsgate, as many troops have been relocated with the apparent removal of several Troll Regiments from the area, allocated to obviously weaker targets.

Several attacks against the estates of the Ashbury have been easily repulsed by Ducal troops, led by Sir Ivan Drake.

In Eastern Trellheim, Baron Olin has moved a number of troops into the estates of Descante, Rodyn, Oliver and Fellsworth. Refugees are pouring into the capital city and into the estates of Stormwood, Dover, Blackborne, and Nantes.

While attacks still rage across Trellheim, the battle looks bleak, without a leader to rise to the front and take charge of the regiments left in disarray with the Duke’s passing may be overrun and potentially destroyed.

Elven Attacks Abate in City

Since the tragedy of Entholm on May 28, there have been no direct assualts in the capital city by the elves of Dur Namarie upon Ashbury. The elf known as Herukan Mithrauko and his ogre troops have not been seen within the borders of our fair city for some time.

The tree he claims to have left as a gift, however, still remains within the capital city. His Grace Duke Aramis Lyrr had stationed quite a few of his soldiers about this tree who keep it under constant watch. None of the "wooden elves" have come from the tree since the afternoon of May 25th, nor has the tree exhibited its power of sleep since that time.

Unfortunately, whatever magic keeps all races except elves from approaching the tree has grown in strength. Where once it repelled non-elves to a distance of ten feet or so, it now repels them over twenty feet. The guards stationed there have reported that it has been a gradual increase, as none of them noticed it at first, but eventually they realized they could not come as close as in the past.

All efforts to identify the tree, to change it back, or to destroy it have failed. Scholars highly schooled in both earth and celestial magics have had no luck in figuring out what this tree is or what has been done to it.

The fact that only elves can approach it has of course limited the number of scholars who can study it firsthand.

It is hoped that perhaps The Chosen will decide to aid in identifying this tree, as they have the most knowledge of spirit trees.

However, just when it seemed that the Tree would not cause any future problems, on the night of Friday, July 10, a creature came from the “spirit tree” and walked about town, most of his face covered by a cloth and his head cloaked in a hood. Upon closer inspection by many townspeople, a skeletal visage could be seen inside the hood. The creature seemed to be looking for something or someone. It would not speak to anyone.

The intrepid Healers’ Guildmistress Natasha threw several undead destroying spells on it, but they had no effect. When a greater undead in the area tried to control it, it merely stated “Mind your own business.” It was later established that this creature was a bone golem and not an undead.

It continued to ignore most everyone and walk about the town, even going into people’s homes. The creature evidently questioned some of the townsfolk about the whereabouts of mystic wood elves. These townsfolk ran about trying to warn Rune and Azura, the only two in the central town at the time. The creature eventually found them in their unwarded home and deathed them both, Rune still half asleep. The creature then walked out and back into town, where it was attacked by a large group of townspeople. No weapons seemed to harm it and it ripped out of even a Confine spell. While in a Web, it was given a killing blow with an enchanted blade by Sir Jonathan Dragonhart, and even this had no effect. The creature seemed most displeased when Calis hit it with several Lightning Storms, as it then paralyzed him and Guildmistress Natasha. It then asked the assembled crowd, “Are you finished? If you’re not, I will kill you all and not just the mystic wood elves.” Sir Jonathan advised leaving it alone for now, as no one seemed to have the answer to destroying it. The creature soon after went back into the tree.

Heroes Retrieve Chalice of Sovereignty

It was a bright, warm afternoon when Duke Aramis Llyrr called the adventurers and nobles of Ashbury to Gwendolyn's Field. They stood in preparation for their journey through the Enchanted Mists to the resting place of the Chalice of Sovereignty.

Lady Azreal and Baron Agnar brought the Vessel of Vapors forward. The Vessel was a gift from the Lady of the Mists as a sign of her compact with Ashbury. This tiny cauldron, when filled with water, sends out a summoning call to the Enchanted Mists. The adventurers stood in a circle as the Vessel of Vapors was filled with water. At first, nothing happened, but then a mist began to form nearby. Duke Aramis led the way into the mists.

The adventurers emerged on a high mountain plain. Before them stood a sharp rise in the land. At its summit rose a solitary, thin tree. As they drew close, an undead abomination appeared hurling fiery threats and warnings down the hill upon which it stood. It identified itself as King Melagar, the last Land-Bonded king of Icenia who had fallen from grace.

As King Melagar hurled down his threats, Baron Agnar and Duke Aramis started forward, leading the adventurers. But then all were taken by surprise when the King called out a summons and an undead army suddenly rose out of the earth of the hill.

The adventurers halted and regrouped.

King Melagar shouted down more threats and then asked if the Ashbans were ready to turn around and return to their homes.

Duke Aramis answered, simply “No,” and turned his back on the king to address the adventurers. The undead spellcasters began to hurl down dark bursts of necromantic magic.

His Grace called for a rogue squad to be formed to manoeuver behind the undead. The squad, made up mostly of the Ducal Rangers, Professor Xavier , and a few other adventurers, got into position. The mystic wood elf Rune, made a risky climb up the hill toward the tree believed to hold the Chalice. That’s when the Ashbans readied themselves and charged the hill. The battle was joined!

It was a fierce fight, with victory swinging back and forth towards each side. The Black Unicorns and the Court of the Ash Forest made heroic efforts against the undead. Rune searched the tree and dug around it, desperately seeking the magic artifact, but found nothing.

The Ashbury Healer’s Guild members did a remarkable job, keeping the adventurers alive and dragging away those magically imprisoned to safety.

Finally, the Ashbans triumphed and when the last undead warrior crumbled to dust, they gathered around the tree. Heads were put together to find a solution and many things were attempted to find the Chalice. Grog the half-orc even climbed to the highest branches.

Finally, Rune suggested a Remove Curse spell. Ta’Wané the gypsy cast the spell and the tree slowly transformed into a mist, which quickly dispersed and then stood the sacred Chalice of Sovereignty.

All stood back and called for His Grace to take the Chalice. The Duke took up the Chalice and led the adventurers back into the mist and to Ashbury proper.

Then water was poured into the Chalice and His Grace drank from the cup. Duke Aramis looked at everyone and said, “Nothing’s happening” and then promptly fainted.

The adventurers formed a protective ring around the Duke until he woke. When His Grace did awake, he was visibly weak and mumbling a string of senseless images. Baron Agnar later figured that His Grace was seeing many parts of Ashbury all at once. His Grace was then escorted to a carriage that took him to his manor house here in the capital.

Battle Against Thessi Continues with Some Setbacks

A Report from the Field

by Ferlen Vorick

This article was written under orders from Elder Brendan who was ordered by Elder Zandar to keep the citizens of Ashbury informed of all activities concerning the battle against Thessi. For those unaware of what we are dealing with, please consult previous editions of the Ashbury Times for details.

Towards the early part of June when Elder Brendan of the North sent his troops from Barrowdowns according to orders from Baron Olin, the prophecy of the Ritual Massacre began with the destruction of the Bloodstone in Safehaven. To this date, the Elders Samuel, Nar, and Thorn Merik, and High Elder Brac Nor have permanently died. Anyone who knows information concerning their stones please contact a Council Elder or Elder Brendan. It is essential for them to rest in peace.

This has caused riots in the places where biata are plentiful. However, Elders Zandar and Xapano’s actions have helped to bring these down quickly and to settle matters greatly. The only noble who has shown any interest in the well being of the biata has been Sir Jonathan.

This has caused a large exodus from Safehaven and other places where biata are plentiful to Hopewell, Hrin Merik, Grimsby and Grey-stone, where the biata are welcome and protected. Many blame Kelial, who apparently lost all interest in protecting biata when he changed to a mystic wood elf. His statue in Hopewell was recently destroyed to no public objection.

On the bright side, Sir Jonathan is doing everything he can to solve the problems, and the riots and bad feelings have started to abate. This has renewed energy across Blythedale especially.

The magistrates of Hopewell and Bloodstone who had but recently been sentencing large numbers of wild elves and others have been removed when it was determined that they had been Thessi agents, and Sir Jonathan is working with Zandar to appoint a biata magistrate who is above reproach.

Recently Brendan’s top General captured a captain in the Ducal army who had been a Thessi agent. She was brought to the capital city for questioning, and Baron Agnar took command of the situation which distressed the General, as the Baron’s wife is known among the biata for being insane. The General made a comment about this and was ordered by the Baron to leave. The prisoner was then executed, which led the General to comment that the insanity must be catching, as the Captain would surely resurrect and continue her battle against Ashbury.

Later that night, some Thessi agents had apparently captured some citizens and removed their memories. One, a caster named Nathan Westwind, was brought into the Dragon’s Flagon to meet with Elder Zandar who was able to restore the man’s memory. Nathan and his companions knelt before the Elder and offered their thanks and asked what they could do to repay him, and Zandar merely smiled and stated that he may call upon them in the future.

Later, as Xapano arrived, people commented that both Elders seemed to be constantly smiling and friendly. This is because not only are they truly friendly people, but they were attempting to show that biata are not all secretive and solemn. This has led many to see that perhaps the change in the Biata Councils has not been so bad. Many biata are very thankful for this and hopeful that much of the distrust and suspicion of their race can be a thing of the past.

The final and best news is that Thorn Vardik has escaped from his capture by the Thessi and, once it is determined that he is free from any Enslavement or mind-altering instructions, he will be presented to the Count so that he may give his information about our enemy.

Trolls Continue Their Attacks; Send Missive

Because you puny races are so stupid that you need to write things down to remember them, I am here to make sure you never forget this stupendous battle. I want all you puny ones, who will soon forever leave our lands, to read and remember.

As I sit here, using the blood of one of your farmers (tasty fellow) for ink, I remember the night so well, I almost feel like I am back there. I was sitting on a hill, doing one last preparation of my spells, when I looked out onto the horizon. There, in the distance, came the perfectly timed march of the 4th Troll Platoon of the Fatal Maces. Their weapons, held straight, and bodies firm, they marched towards the town they would conquer.

Then a loud noise disturbed my observations. When I turned to spy the disturbance, I saw a group of noisy group of lesser creatures stomping through the hills in disarray, making a pitiful attempt to ambush the troll army. The 4th Troll Platoon was outnumbered at least four to one, but they felt no fear. Instead, they bravely formed a battle line and faced off against the horde of pitiful creatures.

The commander of the troll forces demanded the surrender of the town. A man, claiming to lead the weakling’s forces, parlayed with him. This man claimed he was the Warlord of Ashbury, and said the weaklings would never surrender. And thus, the frailty of these creatures were proven again, as continued conversation between these leaders proved that the true leader of the Ashbury forces was too scared to stand on the field of battle.

Then, the troll commander, always leading by example, started the battle with a wave of spells. The battle was fierce and the human lines were broken multiple times. But even a fox can be killed if attacked by enough rabbits. Yet, while, the 4th Troll Platoon did finally fall, I did see, though the thick of the battle, the troll commander cast an Imprison on the so-called Warlord of Ashbury. No matter who was standing at the end, there can be no doubt that the trolls were the true victors of that skirmish.

Even then, the battle was not over yet. The 7th Troll Platoon then took the field, and I could clearly see the looks of fear and dismay on the faces of the Ashbury defenders, already weakened by the previous fighting. The 7th Troll Platoon fought no less skillfully than the 4th Platoon, and once again bodies of our puny foes littered the field. Despite having a numerical advantage, the lack of skill possessed by the puny defenders once again caused them to be in almost constant retreat.

After about 10 minutes of fierce fighting, Grull the brave leader of my platoon, the 2nd Troll Platoon, ordered us upon the field. But even as we reached the field, I witnessed, with sorrow, the destruction of the remainder of the 7th Troll Platoon. Avenging my fellow trolls, I savagely ripped into their ranks, raining spell upon spell on the assorted weakling races. Fighting with spells, and a hill troll named Drog defending me, I felled at least a dozen enemies, striking two of them with death spells. The humans fought like a group of dissidents in disarray, running to the scene of a small skirmish after it was already over, while we fought like a pack of wolves, vicious and cunning. If our numbers had been greater, they would have fallen that very night.

Eventually our numbers were whittled down. Grull, Drog, two others, and myself were the only left standing from the 2nd Troll Platoon. Grull ordered a tactical retreat. We responded with alacrity, and carefully moved off the battlefield. Yet despite the fact that we were only five and they had at least ten times that many, they showed their cowardice one again by failing to pursue.

Once we had escaped the field of battle, Grull sent a scout to spy out the Ashbury forces (if they even deserve that term). The scout reported that their ineffective leaders had made yet another tactical error. Rather than pulling from the field and taking a count of the wounded and dead, they were stupidly milling around, having conversations about the battle, or trying to find comrades that they had been separated from. With such idiotic leadership and such a lack of battle savvy, our brilliant leader Grull, decided to take the reserves and mount one more assault.

Having stupidly assumed we were defeated, our puny opponents were taken completely by surprise. Their forces were in disarray and unprepared for any kind of assault, and we decimated their front line in seconds. Once again, we shredded through their lines, killing all in our path. But eventually, our spell casters, including myself, began to run low on spells. Slowly, the weak defenders started weaning away our forces. Though I can proudly say it required six of their forces to slay Drog, and he took two of them down in the process.

Taking stock of our remaining forces, Grull once again ordered a strategic retreat. And again, our opponents cowardly refused to pursue. Our numbers were diminished, but our spirits were high. We had made a statement and gauged the strength of our foes. I do not doubt that when we return, the weak races of Ashbury will run and hide rather than face our power and ferocity. And do not doubt it, we will return. The Fatal Maces will place the heads of your leaders on pikes, and all of you on the wheel of discipline.

The Undoer Walks Among Us!

P.S. Eric: If you do not put this in your paper, I will eat you.

Mysterious Murders

A number of mysterious murders have taken place recently around the Duchy.

The Magistrate of Wellspring was found murdered recently and permanently dead. Her horse was found wandering into town and in the saddle bag, all of her possessions were intact. The only clue seems to be a small statue of a black bird that was found in the bag which friends of the Magistrate state was not hers.

The Sheriff of this town was also found dead with his throat slashed and clutching a bloody white rose, but he was able to resurrect. He stated he had been attacked from behind and did not know his attacker and denied any knowledge of the rose.

In Crystal Falls, a farming couple who had been searching for their lost children for years and who had received help from some of the nobles were also found permanently dead.

News From Around the Duchy

Barrowdowns: The guardians around the Gryphon Arch have reported that the trapped Kiergani spirits have begun becoming more powerful and have started to attack some of the guards. In addition, more Thessi-Enslaved guards were uncovered recently and were quickly removed and dealt with.

Diron: Fire Elementals have burned some buildings to the ground in this part of Ashbury city. So far they have just been attacking small shacks and abandoned buildings and no casualties have been reported. All the while, they were heard saying, “Bring us Tiriflorn or more shall burn!”

Dor-Lith: The very rich Stormholm family of Trellheim is missing. They had been part of the mass exodus from Trellheim that began as Baron Radric left and the Galanthians and others moved in. Some of the family had been seen going back to help assist others who were attempting to escape. Some of thier servants were able to take the family’s most prized possessions and artifacts, which have been turned over to the Bardic College for safe keeping until the family is recovered.

Dragonhart: News of the Duke’s permanent death and the resignation of Kelial as Baron of Blythdale has made the Sons of the Dragon rise in open revolt in the beleaguered estate of Dragonhart. Riots have broken out throughout the area. The Sons of the Dragon is a violent organization of fanatical supporters of former Duke Alaric Dragonhart’s return to power. Alaric Dragonheart was removed from the ducal throne of Ashbury for his willful use of necromancy. The Sons of the Dragon are a mob of people who have become mutated from their foolish experiments with Choas. They have, in the past, made several assassination attempts on Duke Aramis’ life as well as previously attempting to kill Duchess Mara and Duke Bryan.

Entholm: Humans have destroyed many elven run businesses in the area in retaliation for the elven attack a few months ago. Relationships between the two races, which had been strained historically but were improving recently, have deteriorated once again.

Hopewell: Sir Jonathan has traveled to this place to meet with biata council members Zandar and Xapano in an attempt to resolve some of the problems that the biata have had with previous leaders of Blythedale. On the agenda is the possibility of making mind-altering abilities a criminal offense.

Letters

Editor’s Note: This letter was sent to the Ashbury times previous to the disappearance of Duke Aramis.

Dear People of Ashbury,

It does my heart good to know that I face the trials and tribulations of this new land with a strong and proud people fighting at my side. Upon first finding that I was indeed destined to remain in these lands much longer than expected, I faced this with much trepidation.

I did not know how a duchy that I viewed as weak and misguided could ever hope to tackle the myriad of enemies which now face us. I was greatly wrong in my opinion, and now realize that Ashbury breeds a brave and hearty population, quite capable of dealing with the forces that threaten the duchy and Evendarr herself. I am proud to stand at the side of Ashbury and her people, so that we may end the threats to her borders.

Your Grace, Duke Aramis, I know you may not regard my words with much respect, but I admire the way in which you have rallied your nobles and your people in these times of trouble. I will continue to aid you and the duchy in her fight against the evils that loom over us. I only hope that you will come to accept me as an ally and not an adversary. I follow the Code as closely as any noble, and will continue to do so. Ashbury shall not fall while breath remains within my body.

Sir Frost Vardik

Good People of Ashbury,

My father and I have discussed the recent disappearance of the Ducal Court at great length and I am sending 50 of The Royal Army’s scouts to help locate the bodies, be they dead or alive.

We would also like to offer our assistance in any way that we can.

The troops have been deployed and have already begun searching.

Duke Aramis Llyrr is a great and powerful leader and a man with a heart more pure than the first fallen flakes of snow. It pains me that I may never see his gentle face or hold his tender hand again. Knowledge of his whereabouts is of great importance to me. . .to us.

With sadness in my heart,

Princess Lilyth of Icenia

Heir to the Throne of Icenia

Supreme Cutter of the World Throat

Rider of the Violent Wind

Dedicant of the Red Rage

Lord Commander, Freejyn Horde

People of the Lost Kingdom Returned Known As Ashbury,

On behalf of the people of Cuulannis, I send you greetings and sympathy for the loss of your leader. My General, Chalcid su Tentakis, has spoke of Duke Aramis has a strong and honorable man. We are very sorry for your loss.

The Prophecy of Icenia’s return is happening. We Cuulanni will lend you whatever aid you may need for we have long awaited the fulfillment of this prophecy. Be warned though that our hated enemies, the Galanthians, will do all in their power to stop the Prophecy from occurring and Galantri's curse broken.

Though there are portents that speak of ill times ahead for all, stand firm.

May the stars guide you well,

Queen Velvia su Dulakis

Prime Celestial Prophet of the Realm

Empire of Cuulannis

Attention, all good people of Ashbury:

Now is the time when we must pull together like we never have before. Danger crouches at all borders and desperation begins to gnaw at our uncertain minds. Now is the time we must band together and fight for the common cause, the right, the good, our freedom.

I was enheartened by the aptivity of the people who worked with me as healers during the Troll battle. It is encouraging to see that some will selflessly step up to join in the servitude of the many.

It is my belief that all Healers working as a force to protect the safety of all of the people of Ashbury is much more effective than individuals staying with a small group. If the people as a whole are not protected, then bit by bit they will fall and all will be lost.

Hereby I would like to propose the following. Of course, the Guild would like to gain more members to make it strong, but there are some that do not solely walk the path of the Healer. These people I am calling to, to ask that they join up with those on the Path to protect the many. I wish to organize a battalion of Healers to protect the town as a whole during combat.

This group will be dedicated solely to mending the injured and fallen, to watch over the people as well as one another.

This is very serious responsibility, and not to be taken lightly. Those who are truly interested and committed to supporting those who fight are welcome. Those who are not members of the Ashbury Healer’s Guild will be considered Healer’s Guild Auxiliary.

Those that wish to pledge themselves to the lives of every person in this Duchy, to pledge themselves to the protection of Life and freedom, send missive to the Healers Guild. All who worked by my side I would welcome with open arms. Anyone who wishes to be trained in the arts of Healing may seek me out personally for lessons. I look forward to seeing where the heart of Ashbury lies.

Guildmistress Natasha Roskaya

To the good people of Ashbury:

Recently vicious rumors of me “bad-mouthing” certain people and groups have been spreading like wildfire. I would first like to say that to those who started these rumors, if you think I don’t know who you are then you are even a greater idiot than I am. Secondly, I would like to offer my deepest apologies to the Black Unicorns. Not once have I even thought a negative thing to towards your original members. I have adventured with you in the past and have even come to be fast friends with a few of your most respected members. As for your many initiates . . .well. . .only time will truly tell.

Also, to the Nobility of Ashbury, I understand that there have been allegations that I have spoken rudely of and even offensively toward your titles. To this, I must admit I have only recently moved to this area of Ashbury and I’m afraid that I’m not used to your form of governing. I was raised in a place where the only law was to survive and Nobility of that area would sooner spit in your face than ever help you. It will take some time for me to adjust to this new lifestyle of bowing to those I have never seen nor spoken to, but I will do my best to abide by your laws and respect your leaders.

And finally, to the Gypsy Ta’Wané, I would rather mate with a thousand trolls then ever apologize to you. If you want me to say I’m sorry . . .I can always lie to your face if you’d wish. But it matters not, because even as you read these words, your taint is being removed from me. Believe me when I say to you that this will never happen again, though, because if you ever hex me again with your foul touch I will incinerate your being in self defense. I may be an idiot, but at least I am not an ignorant fool who believes every word she hears from the first pretty or ugly face who sinks low enough to speak to her.

Nathan Westwind

Hey all you Gaje! Bonatifca!

In August, I will be returning to Ashbury (I have to get away from Jaret’s screaming kid) to take over rule of the Duchy since Duke Aramis is gone. . .but no one has to kneel or do all that silly Gaje stuff! My first rule will be mandatory party every night and a huge casino be made called Findrago’s Castle.

Anyway. . .see you all!

Findrago Malreaver

Healer's Guild Report

I would like to welcome four new members to the Guild:

Initiate Celosia, no other affiliation

Initiate Candalis, no other affiliation

Initiate Katyana, no other affiliation

Initiate Patrick Darkhaaze, Barony of Nordenn

Many Guild members have been issued tasks to research Resurrection preferences for the different races. Please assist them in any way you see fit if they come to you with questions. Anyone having opposition to their actions please seek me out at the Guild.

The Guild is pleased to announce that due to its economic health, all potions and elixirs purchased from the Guild will be available at half of the previous cost. This would mean that a Cure Light Wounds potion (equivalent to the first level spell Cure Light Wounds), which was once two silver nobles to purchase, will now be only one silver noble.

Guild members receive a discount, provided they do not abuse this policy.

The Guild also has decided to do away with the previous tenet of charging one gold for Resurrection. As long as the Guild has the funds available to purchase stock for sale to the people of Ashbury and support its members, all Resurrections will be without charge.

Please keep in mind, however, that the Guild operates primarily on the donations of good people, a great many of which have been very generous to the Guild in past months. A few copper here and there make a difference, which can then be reflected in the Guild's ability to lower prices and further help the people of Ashbury.

Necromantic items, potions, components, and Formal magic scrolls are purchased by the Guild for disposal. All potions are purchased at double the value, ritual components are purchased at the market rate, Formal magic scrolls are purchased at the cost of five gold per level of a Permanent scroll, one gold per level of a Temporary or Single-use scroll. Necromantic magic items will be priced dependent upon the effect and duration of the enchantment. Turn your illegal item into cash!

The Guild is seeking Formal magic components and scrolls for the following Rituals: Destroy Magic (rock salt & lime), Mark (perfect pearl), Investiture (bug in amber) and Enchant. Please see the Guildmistress if you wish to sell any of these items, or others you think the Guild may be interested in.

The Guild is currently offering thirty gold crowns to anyone who wishes to sell the Primary for Investiture. The Guild offers many services, including: Resurrection, spell ink sales, instruction in Earth magic and the healing arts, potion and elixir sale and trade, Ritual component and scroll sale and trade, Ritual casting, Ritual component identification, research in matters of Earth magic.

Recently, a group of Guild members consisting of Initiate Candalis, Initiate Drakonios, Initiate Calis, and Initiate BrightHawk were dispatched to Zalinarik's Keep to assist his followers with a task. An Order elemental led the group to a cave thought to be the lair of one of Morgann’s minions. The group was successful in routing the monster, destroying the lair, and crushing all of the lesser undead that were wandering inside. They were rewarded by Zalinarik with the information necessary to create the Talon Scroll spell Elemental Shield in a studyable battle magic form. This spell will be available at the Guild for study and transfer at the regular cost of two copper per level of spell.

Lastly, I have heard (through the proverbial grapevine) that there are people who have opposition to how the Guild is run. Since none of them have had the presence of mind to come and speak to me in person, understandably I cannot adapt the Guild's practices to accomodate their preferences.

The Guild is a Guild that serves the people, and no better way can it serve the people than if the people get involved. If anyone has a comment, complaint, or suggestion, simply speak to me directly at the Guild and I would be more than happy to discuss it with them. Rumor-spreading does not a stronger organization make, or a stronger people make. It disenheartens me to see some that would rather whisper falsehoods from the shadows than make their concerns known and actually put a purpose to their words. In any case, it is true that the Guild does not always have an attendant. There is a simple reason for this—I am but one person. One person needs to eat, to sleep, and to be present elsewhere when the situation arises. I will make no excuses for my absences, since I am secure that my actions are none but all I can do to support the people of the duchy.

The most effective answer, of course, is that more people get Invested in the Guild's Permanent circle. Which means you, the people, need be more involved. Join the Guild —work for the people and become a servant and protector like other stalwart members. Once a member has proven their ability, trust, and competence, they are Invested in the circle. Would you wish for any other type of person to be in control of such a thing? As well, this Investment requires components, and now scrolls, of which I have few. Those who complain to the sky and do nothing to change, you should be the ones to take note. If you find these items, I would expect you to be the first on the Guild’s doorstep offering them for sale or donation. Speak not words of discontent for no reason—make a move to change what it is that you do not approve of. This is all I have to say on this matter.

Guildmistress Natasha Roskaya

Mage's Guild Report

As I’m sure many of you are aware, there has been much confusion as to who is running the Mage’s Guild these days. We have decided that for the benefit of the Guild and its members that Se’tare Kismet Bandar shall be taking on the primary role as Guildmistress. Guildmaster Nikias and Guildmistress Tabitha will be assisting her as needed. They will still hold their titles within our guild, but will not be there on a regular basis. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to speak with any of us.

The Ashbury Mage’s Guild is pleased to announce the following Apprentices to the Guild:

D. Gadlen Chimeron

Nihilius

Rune

So’je

We would also like to congratulate Faelynn on his advancing to Guildsman. He has exceeded in his guild tasks and we are proud to have him as a member.

The other members of the Guild, in good standing are:

Sir Du’Gaul Darkfire

Rasq DarkMoon

Nafud

Nathan Westwind

If your name is not on the list, it is probably because you missed the last Guild meeting or because you have not been in touch with the Guild since the recent changing of Guildmistresses. Please contact the Guild so that we may update our records.

Fire Elementals were recently seen at the Guild, looking for Royal Guildmaster Tiriflorn. Anyone wishing to share information on this matter may do so either by correspondence or in person.

May the Moon and stars guide you,

Guildmistress Kismet

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

Looks like after all his posturing, Johnny Falcon just couldn’t take the competition and withdrew from the Gypsy Toy contest. . . leaving the field clear for Inoque (who had already scored higher than any other before him, beating even Rasq’s long-held record) to win. The outside judges were Rasq, holder of the “title” two consecutive years, and Zatarina, onetime founder of this contest.

Of course, the only gypsy in town at the time of judging was Ta’Wané. . .wonder where Natasha disappears to every time there are Gypsy doings happening in town? Ta’Wané finally took the plunge and joined a team officially. . . giving her oath of fealty—and an unforgettable bow—to Duke Aramis. The Order of the Black Unicorn even made a special sash for this “never a tabard” gypsy.

Nate Westwind took the plunge too. . . into idiocy. Just ask him and he’ll tell you he’s an idiot!

And speaking of taking the plunge, there was love at first sight for the Duke, or so they say. Me, I wonder. The phrase “from the minute I looked in her eyes” just makes me worry. . .

Sir Daniel was overheard ordering Squire Azura to go back to the Black Unicorn’s home and then later on apologizing for giving the order. Hmmm—is it possible that she wears the pants in this relationship?

Looks like Natasha may be giving up on Sir Ivan and falling into the arms of Guildmistress Tabitha. The two have been seen alone together many times.

Baron Olin, Sir Jonathan, Sir Du’Gaul, and Sir Zachary are four of Ashbury’s most handsome noble bachelors. Ladies, grab ‘em while you can. Good looks, Nobility, money . . .they top the “Most Eligible Bachelors” list. Grog the half orc has also proven himself quite the ladies man. Personally, I don’t go well with green.

Sir Jonathan by the way is practically grovelling before the Biata Councils while Sir Daniel is hardly on speaking terms with them. Could it be because Zandar called then-Baron Kelial a “goat scavenger”?

Some crazy Galanthian Phrenologist named Xenex was looking at Ator’s head and the following conversation was overheard:

Xenex: You will be a great chief someday and recover a great blade for your people.

Ator: Do you see anything else?

Xenex: The earth will open and smash you into little bits (walks away).

Speaking of prophecies, Lady Azrael has apparently been affected by a strangely changed version of the Blakeney Curse, which gives a vision of the future to those of the Blakeney family line. She warned Duke Aramis that a dragon might be after him and try to kill him. The Duke disregarded her warning and within half a day he and his entire court had been Obliterated by a dragon.

FOIL leader Teril Belayson was seen attempting to place a sign upon the so-called “Spirit Tree” that was placed in town by Mithrauko but was stopped by the Duke’s guards. It is rumored that the racist Amani is attempting to forge an alliance with the Dur Namarie, who apparently share many of Teril’s ideas about racial superiority.

That’s all for this month. Keep sending me your gossip to keep my column interesting. Until next time, remember—If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
