Undead Jaded Cabinet Defeated in Fenwyck Keep

Many of Ashbury city's bravest adventurers, including many nobles, gathered on the morning of August 5th to assist Baron Thomas Grey in his attempt to free Fenwyck Keep. The Keep and its immediate surroundings had fallen to the combined forces of the undead group known as the Jaded Cabinet. The Cabinet had used a small army of mercenary orcs to aid them in their quest and had taken over the Keep two weeks earlier.

Baron Thomas had planned to enter the Keep during daylight hours via a secret cave entrance known only by a handful of his most trusted advisors. In the hope of catching the Jaded Cabinet in the daylight hours when they would be at their most vulnerable, he and those who cam to assist arrived at the secret entrance only to discover that it had been Warded.

As they pondered their next move, a hulking corpse dressed as an ancient knight from Baltaria greeted the Baron and his army from behind the Ward. The death knight, later identified as Talbot Fitzhugh of Rotaria, taunted the nobility of Ashbury and ordered that Fenwyck surrender or that he would "march upon Ashbury and lay bloody waste to all in my path."

Baron Thomas never wavered in his resolve to fight the undead monstrosity until the death knight produced his hostage, the Baron's twin sister, Lady Talia, who calls Fenwyck her home.

Taken aback by this surprise, and fearing for his sister's safety, Baron Thomas quickly offered his life in exchange for his beloved sister. There was much discussion and disagreement among his court but Thomas merely stepped forward as the greedy death knight made his trade. Still garbed in her nightclothes, Lady Talia stepped through to the company of her friends, shaken from the ordeal but coherent and unhurt.

Baron Thomas was whisked away into the Keep as the Ward closed behind him. The dejected army moved back to the makeshift encampment in the woods to ponder their next move.

Mercenary orcs continued to attack randomly throughout the day as the heroes planned strategy, and to complicate matters and make them worse, there was evidence that Fenwyck had been betrayed by one of its own citizens.

Many adventurers, including Natasha, Olin, and Modi, searched frantically for other means of entrance to the Keep. Their efforts were frustrated by the orc forces that patrolled the high walls and who poured pots of boiling oil onto any they could reach.

However, Squires Florin and Kelson's actions were not in vain as they were able to follow a trail left by the orcs to an abandoned farm on the outskirts of Fenwyck Hills where many orcs were seen.

Using this information, Duchess Mara led an attack upon the farm which ended with only minor injuries. It was here that a map was discovered giving proof of the treachery against Fenwyck.

Meanwhile, other adventurers, primary among them Hendrick, Finther and Radric, uncovered other evidence that pointed towards Arturius Smeed, Fenwyck's seneschal. After extensive questioning from Baron Justice, Talia, and others, Smeed broke down and confessed to selling out Fenwyck to the Cabinet. Begging for his life, he offered to lead the adventurers of Ashbury past Talbot's traps and into the Keep via another entrance.

After confirming the truth of Smeed's claims, the adventurers gathered quickly to launch the assault. Upon entering, they were met by a vicious orc ambush. The orcs cut a path between their foes and seemed to pour into the Keep's courtyard in endless waves but were eventually were destroyed.

Soon a deadly quiet hung within the Keep's walls. Those present quickly scoured the Keep for other possible ambushes. All of the buildings within the Keep were falling apart or destroyed and many looked uninhabitable. Eventually, after determining that no other ambushes were likely, all proceeded towards the Great Hall.

Once more a Warded entrance greeted those present. Duchess Mara, Baroness Laurelin and Baron Justice pondered their next move as the rest of the hastily gathered army of adventurers looked around warily. Finally, one adventurer realized that he held the key, having obtained it earlier from one of the orcs, and the Ward was opened.

The charge into the Main Hall pushed the orcs within back a bit but they held their ground better than expected. The ringing clash of steel on steel echoed through the wooden structure. The Ashbans cut through the orcs to challenge their leader, an orc warchief identified as Amish MacLeer. Vanquishing him, the heroes poured forward only to discover the horrid sight of Talbot and the rest of his Jaded Cabinet, their putrid and rotting flesh somehow able to withstand the faint light that penetrated through the heavy clouds and into the room.

The adventurers retreated only to be met by a new wave of orcs pouring into the Keep from the rear. Those determined to save Fenwyck and the Baron had fallen into a trap!

The Jaded Cabinet attacked the front flank as the orcs harried the rear. Many brave fighters discovered their weapons had no affect against the evil undead and the necromantic magic that held their corpses together in the daytime. As rain began to fall through the holes in the ceiling, making fighting even more dangerous, adventurers who could cast Enchanted Blades and use other magical means were called to the front lines, among them Sir Eridan, Sir Konrad, Squire Jaret, Lord Hanson, Maldeev, Raymox, Naerfin, and Morlox, as well as many of Ashbury's bravest adventuring groups such as the Shield of Vandemor, the Wolf Pack, and the Harvest Moon.

The situation took a turn for the worst as Baron Justice accidentally triggered a trap at the door which set off a Berserk gas. The already hurt Ashbans found themselves fighting each other while simultaneously trying to defend against the attacks of the Jaded Cabinet. Those affected by the gas were quickly dropped and healed and brought back into the battle, so this did not alter the battle's course to any great degree.

Meanwhile, the orcs attacking from behind were pushed back enough so that the Ward could once again be raised. This did not sit well with Guildmistress Isabella Nault, a biata, who immediately put a Circle of Power around herself to protect herself from the celestial magics. A fierce argument ensued between her and Baroness Laurelin_the Baroness had raised another Circle to protect the dead forms of Mason, Quentin, and her squire Algar. There were no more Life spells available and Isabella refused to lower her Circle to save any of the dying. Eventually she was convinced to do so and used her remaining Life spell to bring back Algar.

As the adventurers of Ashbury held back and tried to tend to their wounded, the undead paced about gleefully. Then, with new found strength and resolve, the adventurers charged the undead and after a violent struggle were able to defeat them. The Jaded Cabinet was defeated, but not destroyed, as their bottles were nowhere to be found.

Baron Thomas was found in a basement cell and released, restoring Fenwyck to its rightful rule. He thanked those who had freed his barony of this evil and vowed that he would find the bottles of the Cabinet and put an end to their aggression forever.

Duchess Announces Changes in Nobles' Tournament

The annual Nobles' Tournament, which will be held from Sept. 1- 4, will prove to be festive time in Ashbury, with all of the Baronial courts and the Ducal Household participating. However, it will be slightly different according to the wishes of Her Grace.

"We will be trying out new events and eliminating others in an effort to keep the Tournament fresh and exciting," she said. "For this year, the Hero's combat and the Riddles competition will not be held. A new event featuring the opening of a sealed box will be added." Magic will not be allowed during that event.

In other changes, the Duchess also announced that the restriction that a member of a noble court who previously participated in the Commoner's Tournament the same year may not participate has been permanently rescinded. She also stated that the use of ninth level spells during the Caster's competition is disallowed.

Given the toll that the wars this year have taken on the armor and uniforms of the Courts, more emphasis will be placed on presentation than on costume during the Colors competition. This event will be used as a forum to present the nobles and squires of each Court to the population, so that all may know them. The Duke and Duchess expects each noble team to have all its your squires who are in town that weekend to be present for this even if they are not participating on the Tournament team.

The prizes for the Tournament have been increased dramatically as well. The Duchy has been fortunate in obtaining a very valuable item to be used as the prize for the Tournament: a bracer bearing the Ducal crest and carrying the Rituals Protection Aura +4, Cloak vs. Command, and Cloak vs. Necromancy.

The shield that was the previous year's prize will be given as second prize. These items will be used by the winning teams in the service of the Duchy for one year, until the following Tournament.

The third, fourth, and fifth place teams will receive 75, 50, and 25 levels of scrolls and potions respectively. The monetary compensation will be increased by fifty percent.

The Tournament schedule is: Saturday: Noon - Colors, Hunt list released; 4 pm - Spellcaster's Battle, Traps. Sunday: Noon - Archery, Race. 8 pm - Entertainment. Monday: Noon - Combat; Hunt ends.

Ducal Proclamation about the Tournament

We are very proud of the fact that despite the tremendous upheaval in Ashbury in the past four months, we are still going forward with our plans for a Tournament.

Many nobles have been perplexed with the dilemma that due to the tremendous surge of trauma befallen on the Duchy: The war with the forces of Fangthorn and Gera, the kidnapping of Camilla and Ta'wane, the abduction of Brianna, etc.--the atmosphere of darkness and hopelessness eliminates the aura of happiness and conscientious spirit that is needed for a successful tourney.

Trust us, we are doing much to correct this tournament so that this positive feelings will usher in greater unity and happiness for every citizen of the Duchy.

We are happy to hear that for the most part, our Barons are still gathering their teams in any regards to recognize and participate in this time honored tradition. We have done much to make this event a memorable one for Ashbury.

Due to the request by the King for the Ducal Coat of Arms to hang in the Hall of Duchies in Evendarr--a new prize will be offered to the winning team. This item will most likely have two differing cloaks, one versus command and the other verses necromancy. It will also have a significant protection aura on it, to further herald the champions of the Duchy.

We are reaching deep into our personal family coffers to demonstrate how much we care and honor our nobles for bringing a little happiness and levity to the Duchy during the time of darkness associated personally for our family as a result of the nefarious Truxton. Despite our personal tragedy, we hope that all of our nobles participate.

For colors, we personally understand the financial strains associated with this. Colors demonstrates team unity, honor, and discipline. This is not a fashion show but a presentation of honor. Feel free to be creative in your presentation by using musical instruments or through the giving of small gifts to the Duchy (the Shield of Vendamor won the Colors tournament for presenting us with the Bottle of Avar Lychus).

You are all loved and valued by the Ducal House for you duty. Please participate, as it means so much to us personally.

As much as we regret ending this proclamation on a stern note, we will do so: Those Baronies that choose to dishonor the Duke and Duchess by not participating will fall into "Disfavor." Disfavored baronies will find that they will lose authority and trading privileges and are less likely to have their squires vigorously tested. Such is a small price in comparison for a violation of the Code of Chivalry. Thou shall scrupulously preform thy noble duties be they not contrary to the laws of the land.

In this case we stand firm that it is a duty to compete in the Tournament in demonstration to the people that our traditions are both important and invaluable. We shall cheer you all on, and look forward to judging your abilities and teams.

In the name of our Family, Duchy, and Kingdom let this proclamation be carried throughout the Duchy in the name of its liege lords: Mara Tirane and Bryan Nordenn. Our word is law.

Mara Nicosia Vila Tirane

Lord of the Four Peoples

Bryan Islevarr Nordenn

Servant of the Four Peoples

Fist Reportedly in Disarray

Reports indicate that the Ashbury branch of the criminal organization known as the Fist is suffering severely due to the recent loss of their commander, a biata called Father Acromar.

Father Acromar was captured and incarcerated recently when Squire Wilhelm Neumacht lured him into a trap on the outskirts of Ashbury City. He has been sentenced to at least one Obliteration which has not yet been carried out.

It is believed that Acromar's control and influence within Fist ranks was considerable, possibly integral, as indicated by Partridge estate Sheriff Ian Elderman. Sheriff Ian was in town recently to present a report to Baron Bretton Nordenn, but was called away suddenly due to the Gerakari threat. Before leaving, however, he confirmed a number of rumors regarding troubles suffered by the Fist.

In Port Frederick, a guerilla war continues as two rivals battle each other for control of what is considered to be a large stockpile of Fist resources hidden somewhere in the city. In Wildwood, notorious Fist strongarm Lucas Aber-Shrike was assassinated by a hail of crossbow fire. When he ressurrected in a secret circle of power in the town's sewer, he was slain again, after which his enemies fled. After rising a second time (presumably because the circle was no longer hostile), Lucas found a full contingent of adventurers and town guardsmen awaiting him at his "secret" street level exit, the result of an anonymous tip to the local Magistrate.

A poorly coordinated attempt to burn down the Guildhouse of Merchants in Dover led to the capture of more than a dozen tattooed Fist members. This victory also netted information about their headquarters and a secret smuggling operation that was going on between Jared and Denthor.

These incidents would seem to point to a time of troubles for or possibly an end to the Fist in Ashbury. Sherriff Ian said, "We're going to be hitting them while they're down."

Magistrate's Report

by Lord Magistrate Faustus Neumacht

Given the thankful lack of criminal activity in Ashbury of late, this space will be used to display one Her Grace's recent proclamations, on the exercise of authority in the Royal Guilds. The drafting of the document was a cooperative effort over several months between myself, Sorceress Shalizar, Daphne Green, Isabella, the Duchess, and the Duke.

All involved suggested changes, and all agreed to the final version below before Her Grace signed it. I have found few areas of law where there has been so much misunderstanding in the past as this--hopefully, the following statement will at last clarify matters.

Ducal Proclamation #142 / 595:

Jurisdictional Clarifications on the Royal Guilds

142.1: On this day, July 14, 595, Her Grace, Duchess Mara Nicosia Vila Tirane of Ashbury decrees the following stipulations concerning executive and legal jurisdiction in the Ashbury Mages' Guild and Ashbury Healers' Guilds. These two extensions of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, both under Royal Charter, are hereafter referred to as the Royal Guilds.

142.2: The Royal Guilds and their membership are subject to all the laws of the Duchy of Ashbury. Crimes committed on their grounds, even within the Permanent Circles of these institutions, shall be liable to legal prosecution.

142.3: Should one of the Royal Guilds have a wanted criminal or suspect in custody, the Guild shall yield such an individual as soon as possible to any noble of Ashbury who has the authority to dispense justice in the estate of Ashbury. Such individuals are the the Duchess, the Duke, Royal Knights, Ducal Knights, and the Lord Magistrate. In accordance with the Royal Charter of the Healers' Guild, no executions shall be carried out within its Permanent Circle.

142.4: Nobles who are members within the Royal Guilds shall relinquish their executive powers and privileges while on duty within the said institutions. While on duty, they may not issue orders to other Guild members; the hierarchy of the Royal Guild shall take precedence. Membership by nobles in these institutions is contingent upon their understanding and acceptance of this limitation.

142.5: The Royal Guilds' mandate to remain neutral with regard to political concerns shall be honored. To this end, no noble of Ashbury shall give orders that affect Guild practices or actions to the Guildmaster/Guildmistress, or to a Senior Guildsman temporarily in charge of the Guild (e.g. ordering the Circle to be lowered, ordering a ritual to be cast, forbidding a resurrection, etc.), nor shall a noble order a lesser member of a Royal Guild to circumvent the Guildmaster's/Guildmistress' authority. Likewise, the Guildmaster/Guildmistress shall not issue orders to Guild members contrary to the orders of nobles of the Kingdom of Evendarr or against the laws of the Duchy of Ashbury. The Guildmaster/Guildmistress shall remain subject to noble orders in matters not dealing with Royal Guild affairs, and shall remain liable to criminal prosecution as a commoner.

142.6: The nobility shall not order the release of internal Guild records or information. Nonetheless, the Duke and Duchess reserve the sovereign right to intervene and exercise executive power or demand such information should it be in the interest of the safety of the Duchy. However, even in such extreme cases, the integrity, membership, and internal structure of the Royal Guilds shall not be compromised or altered, given their Royal sanction.

News From Around the Duchy

Blackbourne: A series of disturbing attacks by strange bandits in black masks have left many citizens nervous and upset and wary. So far the bandits' only aim seems to be terrorization of the townsfolk, as robberies and lootings have been kept to a minimal.

Dockside: The mysterious and somewhat mad rampage of an elemental creature drew the attention of the Town Guard, who upon arriving at a theives' guild safehouse found a group of criminals in varying stages of incapacitation. Descriptions of the elemental beast varied from teller to teller, but each agreed that he crackled with some form of elemental energy and that he seemed interested in only one thing: the location of missing tavern keeper Camilla Zatar. Autorities are investigating.

Gryphonwatch: Sir Thyren's prolonged absence and negligence of this town has resulted in numerous public disturbances, most recently involving an effigy of the Paladin being burned in the public square. The Duchess has taken over management of the estate and has made some improvements, but anti-noble feelings run high.

Manchester: Large amounts of beer were consumed in this estate, owned by the Lord Magistrate, when a celebration in his honor unveiled a small bust molded out of recycled Neumacht ale bottles. Commoners are anxious for Faustus' return to the estate to see it "before someone drops it."

Tilomon: This area of the Ash Forest has seen a number of attacks by obviously diseased dryads, their leaves and skin having rotting black patches. The dryads seemed to emerge from the trees around them and begin to throw necromancy. These attacks have occurred around the kingdom but seem to have been concentrated in this forest just over the Ash River from the city.

Letter to the Editor

Editor:

"The law is no longer the safest shield. Our new shield is the ancient Code of Man, and we must uphold its ideals with a vengeance."

With this Creed the Archives of the Shield of Vendamor begin, and so by this Creed we, the warriors of the Shield of Vendamor, do live our lives. Before I begin, let me explain that I take this space to help to explain some of the ways of the Shield as per request of the Duchess, so that all may know us more and fear us less. . .

The Shield of Vendamor began some forty years ago in the hills of Jennith, Niman under the guidance of Regent Paul Treyad, a former Knight of Niman who came to oppose the ways of his oppressive liege and truly started the Shield the day he took the Brutish Lord's life. From that day forth, Regent Treyad commanded a new order that would come to be known as the Shield of Vendamor, and he led his men into battle against all things unjust for as long as his spirit was intact on this Plane.

The Shield came to Ashbury in the spring of 594 at the request of myself, Deven Du'Leges, the sixth and current Regent. I sent my most trusted friend and wedge brother, then Commander Unrok Garror, into this place to begin to recruit new men into our ways for I began to realize that Niman was no longer suitable to be our home. After Unrok came back and reported that things here were to his liking, I moved the Shield to Ashbury and here we shall stay. Ashbury has proved to be a fine home for myself and my men, and I have grown to feel as if I truly belong here.

Why does it seem like I am often at odds with the powers that be in Ashbury? Why do I often state that I have "no regard for the laws of Ashbury," as the Ashbury Times puts it? Of central importance to the Initiates of the Shield is the idea that men who are truly just and incorruptibly noble need no law to live by--they are guided by a higher set of principles that do not need to be set to paper to be truly understood. If a man is noble in his heart and in his spirit, why does he need to be reminded of the things that are required of him by written laws that can be corrupted and manipulated?

The Shield of Vendamor believes that the natural laws of justice and freedom should be the highest laws in the land, and that all should be allowed to pursue life as they see fit. It is the purpose of the Shield to lay watch over all that is within our sight to observe for violations of the Code of Man, and it is our duty to extinguish forever the baneful spirits that hinder these freedoms. The Shield's ultimate purpose is to Educate all within this place that those that oppress and those that destroy and those that corrupt will ultimately meet their demise. We shall not rest until all of the Brutish lie forever still. I will not allow it.

If our ways seem strange to some of you, understand that the ancestral home of the Shield is a much different place than this Duchy where we all now live. I want all of you to appreciate the benefits of living in a place where the Nobility really seem to care about the conditions of those that inhabit their lands, as it is not so in much of the world. And if the ways of my men and I seem harsh to some, it is because that we have discovered that the only way to defeat our foes is to become one with the ancient warrior that lies in the heart of each of us.

Feel free to approach me with any questions that you have concerning what I have said here. I must tell you now that many of the questions that I have posed are only truly answered once you have joined our bond and worn the fur of a wedge for a time.

Deven Du'Leges

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D'Onym

August always seems a little quiet (maybe it's that heat, maybe it's the fact that so many people went to Blythedale recently to fight the Jaded Cabinet), but I apologize for not having as much interesting gossip for you this month.

The grapevine says that big changes are going down at the Mages' Guild. Members have been grumbling that Unrok has been getting more of Shalizar's time than they have lately, so Shalizar has removed all her invested members and plans on giving every one of her mages some undivided attention. Lucky them! Unrok is trying to win her attention back though. . .he was seen down on one knee in front of her in the tavern.

Speaking of the Shield, reading the letter from Deven explains a lot--I can't help noticing that only men can be "guided by higher principles." This automatically excludes the Duchess, the Baroness, the leaders of the major guilds in town, and 50% of the population, including yours truly! I say!

Where has Dingo been lately? According to Hamlet the dwarf, he skipped town because he owed a lot of money to people. Hamlet and the rest of his companions on the Harvest Moon meanwhile are miffed that Sir Konrad stood them up when they invited him to a party aboard their ship. "He said he'd be there but he never showed up," said the disappointed dwarf.

Baroness Laurelin now has two different statues of herself, presents from her happy citizens, erected at various estates, but do you see her bragging? Well, maybe a little. By the way, there's no truth to the rumor that Sir Kelial's statute erected to him in Hopewell is actually a giant bird bath.

Natasha recently stole Galoran's camouflage face and tried to be "Subterfuge gypsy" but those damned bells kept giving her away.

Remember, in order to have a full column of interesting News They Don't Want You To Know, I need your help! Until next time, remember--If you can't say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
