The 2018 update for the Barony of Rivervale will be available for download within the next week. Here's a sneak peek at the capital of Rivervale, one of the largest cities in the entire kingdom - Port Reliance:

Port Reliance
Baronial Estate
Liege: Baron Darius Rivervale
Steward: James Morrison
Primary Economy: Government, Scrolls, Shipbuilding, Industry, Trade

The seat of baronial government, Port Reliance not only controls trade and policy within the barony but of the Corsith River as well. As one of the largest cities in the entire kingdom, and as the twin city of Port Bayenna, these two merchant hubs control the flow of goods into the kingdom. Port Reliance possesses a shallow harbor which can berth only river-going vessels, however, and oceanic ships dock at Port Bayenna. Opportunities for profit abound, and many merchants make Port Reliance their home, and center of business. Port Reliance has cobblestone streets, and is surrounded by a wooden palisade, making it one of the most secure and best developed cities in the duchy. All of the Old Families maintain some stake in Port Reliance, whether a small residence, or some, such as the Blaine Family, with larger commercial holdings in this busy port city.

Not only is Port Reliance the baronial capital, but it also serves to house the seat of the Baronial Mages Guild. Since 413, Guildmistress Leianna Goldenflower has grown the guild to manage local arcane matters, but also function as a school to train students that cannot afford the journey to the Three Spires. Its popularity among students is growing. The nearby Elfir Ramsey Scriptorium steadily grows in notoriety as makers of scrolls, and illuminators of some of the most prized manuscripts in Acarthia.

The Reliant Guard, its City Watch, is renowned for its organization and omnipresence within the city. Many of its guardsmen serve generationally, and thus with tremendous pride in service.

A visitor to Port Reliance would be remiss without seeing the Grand Shipyards, where the pride of the Acarthian Navy, The Cormorant, was constructed out of native Rivervalean wood. Naturally, this area is a hotspot during the Reliance Festival each May. The Blaine Family, which constructed The Cormorant, has significant holdings in Port Reliance and is a prominent local employer here.

Tamarin Beach is also a popular destination in summertime in particular. Its rocky shores make for uncomfortable sunbathing, but the flow of the river is mild here, and its shallow depth leave the water quite warm in summertime. Keys carved from driftwood, or with trinkets from nature found along the river are popular tokens among the denizens of Port Reliance.

Loamsdown Quarter is something of a misnomer as it’s a rather small neighborhood, encompassing nowhere near a whole quarter of the city as a newcomer might imagine. This community of hoblings is growing, attracted by the presence of a presumably friendly hobling baron and lord of the city. Traditions of The Foothills hold sway in Loamsdown Quarter, which causes some friction with fiercely proud Rivervalean locals. Some portions of Rivervale culture are starting to rub off, however, oddly starting first with Rivervale’s dueling culture which is said to be vibrant and frequently used in this area. Loamsdown Quarter hosts some of the most popular taverns and eateries in all of Port Reliance. Spiced hot cheese is a particular local delicacy.

Breweries and brothels are also among favored businesses in this port town. Belle’s is the favorite among the well-to-do here, with a reputation for elegance and discretion. Twelve Aft is a tavern built at the ground level of a great clocktower which was never finished, keeps no time, but which occasionally activates with strange noises and great mystery to local engineers. For the less discerning, and popular among many visiting sailors are the Gates House brothel, Sabrina’s tavern, and the Green Inn.

The capital city of Rivervale has no independent chapter of The Vigilant stationed there, likely owing to the lack of undead in this highly populated area.

Jim Morrison is your steward? With the Lizard King himself you're lucky to have any booze at all there!

The number of easter eggs in this Players Guide is truly staggering. See if you can count which has the most references in Rivervale: Back To The Future, Star Trek, or my cats. :)
