Overkill to the extreme regarding your slippery slope, seriously... It makes no difference.. Crosses existed before Christianity, Crescent Moons before Islam, Stars before Judaism, and Lightning before Nazis. You can go to extremes to push religious dogma into it if you wish, but there isn't any...

One of the Major issues that come up with in these types of discussion is this, everything associated with Myth or Fantasy comes directly from religious histories.... Elves, Dwarves, lets talk to the Teutonic People or the Classic Norse Believers... Or the Fae... like the Celts... Or how about...

A caveat on that, I have often taken those 2-3 second bursts of OOG to determine what a spell would do to my character, or tell what my character's spell would do to other people... but these should be short and concise bits of information that puts your right back into IG the moment the point...

OOG: David asked my permission to use my name and likeness for this conversation, which I also was able to read over prior to submission. In the future, it is better to coordinate it so it comes up naturally rather then as a story like this. I suggest the same for anyone else doing this...
