A blood curtling scream comes from an alley near the marketplace of Calanhelm. Several members of the town watch move in to investigate. One member comes running out of the alley and spills his breakfast along the cobblestones.
Gaining the attention of a nearby Home Guard Sergeant, the man makes his way into the alley. He moves through the crowd of people into a scene of horror almost beyond imagining. Blood and entrails are scattered on the ground and nearly 10 feet up an adjacent wall. The remnants of a frilly dress can be seen amongst the carnage. The most disturbing thing is the doll. A small child's toy lying in the pool of organs and blood.
A town watchman turns to see the Home Guard Sergeant and asks "a girl? a young girl?". "Used to be." the Guardsman replies coldly. "looks like a beast tore her asunder. Claws and teeth by what remains. Looks like her heart is missing. I'll assume the lead on this investigation. Go to the Garrison and inform the Commander of this. Then check with the Earth Weavers to see if a spirit has appeared in their Circle this morning. Lastly, go to the Conclave-Penta and ask them for a Ritualist that can help with this investigation."
The Sergeant rubs the stuble on his chin. What kind of animal is loose on the streets of Calanhelm that could do this? Almost as an afterthought he turns to another watchman. "Start interviewing any witnesses. Someone may have seen something last night. The moon was full, and the clouds absent. Someone living nearby may have seen the murderer."
