Never LARPed before, so I'm not savvy on all the rules. I was thinking of making some "plate" armor out EVA foam, would this only yield me one point per armor location, or would the aesthetics of heavy plate armor yield more?

Based on the rulebook, your armor wouldn't count as armor, as materials trump appearance as far as base points are concerned.
