Bows and you

Hey archers!
This is just a reminder to what was clarified in the FB thread about bows.

Measuring your bow length so that it falls under the required weapon specs is done so by measuring along the CURVE of the bow, NOT where the string would be and going tip to tip.

Also, while it does say in the rule book that open cell foam tips are optional, the core MUST be sufficiently padded with closed cell foam so that we do not feel the core at all.

As for the opening event, since it is a week away, we will be lenient on the measurements, until May.

Just wanted to bump this thread to remind every archer to measure your bows in accordance with these clarified guidelines. I will have a measuring tape and will be checking bows during Weapons Safety Check at this event.

Thanks for your understanding,

I would just like to ask a question about the reasoning behind measuring it on the curve, because I cut a core that was 4 inches shorter than the maximum, then went through the long process of making a nice latex weapon and since it doesn't actually say in the rule book that a bow is measured on the curve I now have a expensive wall piece that took about a good 12 hours to complete.

I mean shouldn't it be measured for the amount of blockable length it gives you?

Anyone ever tell you that Necromancy is a crime in Acarthia? 'Round these parts that's a hangin' offense. Thread Necromancy is no exception.

As far as the bow question though, I'd leave it to the Weapon Marshall's call.

Official Weapons Marshal response:

Logan-Thomas, I agree with your view of this completely, to be honest. The logic that Alliance should measure along the effective blocking length (or height, viewed in that perspective) makes MUCH more sense to me!

There are many benefits to being part of a national game; one of the drawbacks is needing to agree on common ground for things like this -- The national rule is to measure along the curve, for whatever reason, so our chapter must comply so every chapter has the same weapon regulations. On the bright side, that makes it much easier to pack up the bow in your car and travel to another game without fear of your weapon not passing there.

The best consolation that I can offer is the reminder that the max length for a longbow is 58". Many persons mistake that this weapon type has the same length requirements as a longsword, and thus were saved from the fury of this rule by having made their bows conforming to a shorter measurement in the first place. I hope this was the case for you.

If not, if we can get together at a Sunday weapons practice sometime, or if you want to email me pics of your bow (contact me for the addy), I'm happy to work with you on some suggestions for how it might be altered to fit within 58". Maybe we can just cut a few inches off the ends or something, if your design allows for that.

I'm sorry for your inconvenience; I recognize how really frustrating it is to find a dead thread with important info, and find that too late. It just plain sucks, and I howl with you!

Hello Trace,

Thank you very much for your reply, unfortunately that was not the case. I had made the core 4" shorter than the maximum length (Before curving it) then once everything was finished as I wasn't aware of the curve rule, I was a touch over zealous with the design and the total length along the curve ended up being around 63" along the front curve (56" along the back curve.) Unfortunately the issue is kind of moot at this point, I've decided to stop making weapons for the time being. I'm just a bit tired of putting in effort and then being told that there's an unwritten rules that you or even my local head weapons marshal don't know the rime or reason for the rule. I've scoured the rule book, both the old one and the new 1.3 that came out last month and there is no mention of bows being measured on the curve.

Thank you for the offer, but unfortunately Denver would be a bit of a trek from all the way up in Canada. I think I am just going to drop it though, I mean my character is a Fighter that's played like an Artisan, I'm hoping to Spirit forge soon and just drop all weapon skills. Haha so the point will be even more moot then. But if you could do me a favor love, if you wouldn't mind passing it along to the powers that be that the curve rule should be added into the 2.0 rule book. That would be stellar.

Thank you very much. I am apart of the playtesting, but this matter happened after I submitted my feedback form. It's much appreciated. :)

Once again, Logan-Thomas, I'm sorry for all the inconvenience to you in the whole thing. This thread appears on the Alliance Denver chapter forums, by the way -- You might have found it through a search on the topic from the main boards. You might with to speak with the Weapons Marshal in your local chapter to find out about its standards, and see if that crew can give you some advice about where to take this project now. Your local chapter will always have good resources for you when it comes to physical items that they can see and checkout for themselves.

Take care,

Oh my god... I didn't even see that. I'm so sorry, I thought it was in the general out of game, I totally missed the tab with "Denver." Well, I guess this is why my friends all say "it's a good you're pretty." I apologize and if you'll excuse me I need to go remove my foot from my mouth.

Have a great day

No problem whatsoever, glad that's cleared up all around -- and now you understand why some random person in Colorado was like, "Come to the park and show me your bow." I can imagine that seemed weird. ;)
