Consent Policy and the Cloven Fruit Game

For those unfamiliar with it, the Cloven Fruit is a common Acarthian flirting game often played at parties, and nearly always played at the Masquerade ball. It interacts heavily with our game’s consent negotiation, so in preparation for the October game, here is our quick rundown of how the game works, and how to stay in compliance with Alliance Denver’s consent negotiations while playing!

The most important thing to remember is the difference between IN GAME knowledge and consent and OUT OF GAME knowledge and consent.

When playing Cloven fruit, an actual literal fruit with a number of cloves (the spice) stuck into it is distributed around the party. If another person hands you the fruit, they are asking you for a kiss. If you refuse to take the fruit, you are refusing the kiss entirely, and they must offer it to someone else. If you accept the fruit, you should remove one clove, and the manner of removal dictates the kiss that your character has chosen to allow.

You may remove the clove with a hand, and then touch a spot on your body with it (such as the back of a hand, or your cheek). This constitutes IN GAME permission to kiss that spot.

If you remove the clove with your mouth, and it remains visible between your closed lips, this constitutes IN GAME permission for a closed-mouth kiss.

If you remove the clove with your mouth and hide or swallow it, this indicates IN GAME permission for a deep, open-mouthed kiss.

Once the kiss has been resolved, the receiving character (who chose the location for the kiss) now has custody of the fruit, and can choose another person to hand it to.

IN GAME consent means that one character allows another character to take the action. This could mean simulation roleplay, it could mean physical roleplay, or it could mean agreeing between yourselves that the action took place without any actual roleplay at all. IN GAME consent does NOT indicate that the player has simultaneously granted OUT OF GAME consent; if the character wishes to be kissed, but the player does not, negotiate verbal or simulation roleplay to resolve the action.

OUT OF GAME consent means that you the player are comfortable with the other player taking the physical action. If you give your OUT OF GAME consent for a kiss, that means that the player may kiss you. This does NOT indicate that they have your IN GAME permission, and they might still find themself in trouble with your character.

OUT OF GAME, it is important to negotiate the romantic roleplay of handing someone the fruit, as well as the physical roleplay of resolving the kiss. If you request permission to offer the fruit and it is declined, this plays out as though the thought simply never crossed your mind. No hard feelings, because no offer was made, and no rejection was received.

For simplicity and flow of roleplay, please remember that OOG physical and romantic roleplay negotiations may be made in advance at any point. Please feel free to negotiate comfort levels and consent with people you feel likely to want to exchange the fruit with ahead of time, but if you find yourself drawn to a mysterious masked stranger you have not previously negotiated with, do not neglect to request BOTH forms of consent!

Thank you very much,
Trace
