DARKON

hey have you guys seen this yet?

I got it when it first came out on DVD
was neat and helped me stick with trying to get into Allaince

FW

I just rented it and so far I like it. I loved seeing dark elves actually speaking another language...so far my favorite line is...

"are you gonna fight me fair? or you gonna fight like an elf?"

i nearly spewed juice out my nose!

I forgot about the dark elves in the beginning. That was the coolest part. The burning the castle was okay too.

BUT overall the movie does little to help the hobby. It portrays the typical "loser nerd in mom's basement" stereotype. The single mom/ex stripper living in mom's basement does not make the rest of us look good.

I recently talked to Shane McComber about monster camp and how it seemed to also concentrate on the stereotypes pervasive in society about geeks, nerds and gamers. He brought up the point that people who are more traditionally successful didn't want to be in the movie for fear of it affecting their career. I can understand that. And it's sad. It's okay to run around in funny clothes all weekend chasing a little white ball with a stick, but don't dress up funny and chase your friends with a stick or you are labelled.

Such is our lot.

it also made me look like a bad father through creative editting of conversations... After all, the only reason my daughter was asking me to get off the computer and saying I was playing too much WoW was because she wanted to play!

I am only partially through it but I did realize how blessed we are to have alliance and cool story writers and we're not just out there playing for bits of fake land on a fake map...i mean our adventures are actually quite awesome. not that i've been on one yet since this will be my first time PCing this year but from the NPC side of things.....way better than battling for a hex on a map

oh and the comment "i decide what hits i take" i was like OH HECK NO I HIT YOU...YOU"RE HIT!!! heheheheh

the people intrested in larping and roleplaying watch it and say wow cool I want to do that the people not intrested in it watch and say what jerks
nothing will change that all the movie will do is people that are inclinde to do larping anyway will be more intrested in it.
Im not a drinker and watching drinking movies makes me think wow what lousers with no life and killing themselves with poison
so watching the drinkijng movies never convinces me to want to drink same same

the map of the kingdoms and people trying to take over lands and the castle they built for the days event was very nice
the dark elves were cool and the prices they paid for stuff the massive ammont of gold they had compared to the few coppers I will have was a bit sad :)

I'm in the few coppers boat along with you dear!! this is my first PC event...hehehehe luckly i'm the tavern keeper so i get to eat and i'm pretty sure i have a place to sleep....not like i get to go shopping hehehe

I have to disagree completely. The media tries to persuade people every day what is cool and what isn't cool, and very often the media succeeds. Your point is also valid. Some people will come regardless and some people will think it's stupid regardless.

But there are always people on the fence. If more of the movie was like the opening with the dark elves or if it even just had people talking about the positives of the game, people would be more likely to come. There were some positive things in Monster Camp too. The woman in the wheel chair was really great and her reasons for playing were very positive. That was one of the only sections that really shed a positive light on the game.

And once you sign that release, they can edit it any way they want, as Dave has illustrated. The impression of Dave from the movie is not good. It seems like all he cares about is WoW and from my interactions on the owners' forum I know that is not true, as he puts in a good amount of time with the Alliance as well. I hope he puts a good amount of time in with his daughter too, but not knowing him personally I can't say. From the portrayal in the movie, he doesn't look like the best dad in the world. But hopefully that is false. I'll take Dave's word for it over the movie lacking firsthand knowledge. But a lot of people won't and will just assume the worst from the movie.

Even Beauty and the Geek has done more for geeks, nerds, gamers, larpers and other socially awkward people than either of these movies. It presents them as people and as sympathetic. Neither of these movies really did that. And I'm sure a lot of it was in the editing.

Personally, my favorite show for geeks is The Big Ban Theory. That show is hilarious, yet makes the geeks in it likeable and you end up rooting for them.

Kevin Smith is the best thing for geeks...

But seriously, we should make our own documentary, put it on You Tube and our web page, and show us all in a good light.

Anyone here experienced in film production?

To be honest it's the thing that got me looking for a LARP game. Tara and I saw Drakon on IFC in about November. I started looking for a game late November becuase we couldn't stop watching it (TiVo). So I thank Drakon of "helping" us find Alliance.

I know a guy I see rarely at my game store I could ask

but I think its a fantastic idea to make an Alliance DVD!
with the new site and a bit of work who knows can film festival??

This little professional taboo is what has held my husband back from spreading his creative wings beyond playing MMO's and dabbling in creative writing. Even in the military, respect is lost if your superiors find out you do "unusual things" for a hobby. Up until recently video gaming was part of that "loser/geek" taboo. I am hoping he can work past it and delve into LARPing this coming year. If he does, he may have to keep a low profile about it in his professional life though.

so far i like the movie...still watching it. I don't have much time for the boobtube so i can only watch bits at a time. although my coworker watches beauty and the geek or whatever it was you were talking about up there and she noticed i got a shipment at work of some costume and decoration pieces for my "acting camp" trip that starts in april (alliance NH) and she says "Oh Jena is that for your LARKing?" I said "huh?!" she goes "I was watching the show and I learned all about that LARKing stuff, the geek on there is a LARKer." I said "oh you mean LAR'P'...role play...not role kick butt!" hehehehe but there is this other girl here who claims she'd be totally into playing alliance. the only reason I'm not recruiting her at this time is that....well......she's just NOT a geek. I think I'm a socialist...like...I only think people who pass a Geekdom test should play. I really disgust myself sometimes...... :(

Yes, me.....I know that Jess Brown has also expressed an intrest it this as well. We talked in the past about shooting a docc for HQ. More of a promo, but a documentary can work too.

I do agree with Scott that Darkon focused on that guy in the basement and what not...I also feel it focused too much on his character instead of the game. I loved the concept of the game it slef. I could totally write a weekend/arc/campagin with it.

I agree with this, unfortunately LARP'ing doesnt quite fit in with the overall corporate culture that I work in either. Its one thing to play video games, its another altogether to dress up and run around the forest throwing bird seed at people.

Even video games were very frowned upon only 10 or 15 years ago. A lot of older professionals still don't get it, but smile condescendingly as a lot of younger professionals play video games now.

Change and acceptance take time and effort. Unfortunately I feel neither Darkon nor Monster Camp aided the effort and if anything only reinforced the perception that larps are for losers and weirdos. Let's hope the old saying that any publicity is good publicity is true.

At John Finnegan's services this past weekend an interesting phenomenon took place. His "mundane" relatives saw how many people came out to say goodbye to John. So many people told his family how John had changed their lives. Many of his relatives (older ones too) came to me and said that they had no idea what the whole larp thing was about and thought John just played some silly game. They didn't realize what an impact he had on people through this game. They thanked us for giving them insight into that part of John's life. I think we had them believing in magic by the end of the day. I know I do.

A lot of people would say that larping is a waste of time, it's stupid and much worse. But seeing the turnout at John's funeral puts the lie to any such accusations. It's a tool, a magic wand, to bring joy and happiness and camaraderie and friendship into many lives. I know I personally have hundreds of good friends from it.

Back to the point, the movies portrayed none of this. They dwelt on the drama and ******** and tried to make larpers look like schmucks. Who cares what people do in their spare time as long as it's making them happy and it isn't hurting anyone else. Sadly, a lot of people would rather try and feel better about themselves by making fun of other people.

I always thought Nero/ Now alliance should have some kind of movie to act as a promo. I even made a story board for a trailer in my off time. Now I wonder where I put it...hmmmmm

Sadly enough, most movies take drama to be interesting.

"Happily ever after" is the ending. And yeah, that includes movies about LARPers.

That being said, if Wired can do decent LARPing articles or Hard Gig manage a decent UK TV show on us LARPers...

I think all it'll take in the end is enough folks that hide what in reality is a geeky hobby, not a freakshow simply not hiding anymore.
