Edge Geometry

Anyone have any experience with sharpening their flat blade or latex sword in different ways?

I'm looking for feedback on felt impact and edge durability.

Ie. Boffers are round, made with piping foam, and unless hard from too much tape, tend to spread the impact over a circular contact patch.

The current flat blades that I am making, I have sharpened to 3/8" from a 1" blade thickness, with a edge angle of roughly 30degrees.

I'm considering taking this down to a 1/4" or less to create a softer impact as there will be less material thickness to resist deformation. However, there will be correspondingly less contact area.

Has anyone messed with this at all?

Generally, the thinner the edge, the greater the felt impact of a strike. My assumption is that anything thinner than 5/8" is too thin. Depending on how your local marshals translate the rules, theoretically your edge on a boffer should be no thinner than 1 1/4" plus the outer diameter of your core.

Latex weapons are still essentially a shrug as far as the rules go, just ask your local marshal if they'll let it in game.

what thickness are you on your core to outer edge of padding?
