Fun thread: Who are you?

I was looking over some of my favorite movies as a kid, and have slowly come to the realization that bits and pieces of a lot of my characters often fit various characters I've seen. Or I'll go to a new movie and go "Ooo! I've -totally- had that moment IG!"

So the question then became, "Who are your PCs based on?" Or what character traits do you see in movies/books/media that your character shares traits with?

Gregor was Jack Sparrow before those movies ever came out. ;) In fact, three days after it came out, a friend of mine called me from Texas and asked when I was going to sue for copyright infringement. Basically a little Erroll Flynn/Douglas Fairbanks, a little 3 Musketeers, etc.

I'm a elitist jerk. I look down upon a character who is an obvious expy from another work. Especially because, much as the rulebook states, too many people assume that it won't be noticed, but the sort of folks who would be interested in this game tend to have similar tastes in other entertainment, no matter how obscure.

To quote my brother: "Paolo Oscarot is what happens when Jason Bourne is played by Chris Farley."

He is based initially on Paolo Veratza, my text based halfling rogue who posed as a paladin (Dragonrealms anyone?), most everything else are snippets of various spy tropes crossed with scientist tropes (mostly by wonderful accident)

Like JP's experience, my main character, Nigel, was around before the knockoff's came - such as the character Jon Carnahan in The Mummy (didn't Nigel hide in a bunch of undead like that?) or Vlad Taltos in the Drageran series (Doesn't Nigel fight like him?). Heck, Nigel was around with me as a part in a play before I ever heard of LARPing. But over the years, I'd say that his influence would be from Corwin of the Amber book series (Sorry, this isn't the olympics), Vlad of the Drageran Series (When Assassins make mistakes, people live) Malak and other from the movie Conan the Destroyer (It's bad luck to kill a wizard) and other 'cowardly heroes', and many flim-flam artists I personally ran into throughout my life.

Can't say that any of my PC's were ever based on characters from movies, but I had an NPC once that was pretty much Bellatrix Lestrange before Ms. Rowling even wrote the novels. Pretty fun to watch her on the big screen! Even when reading the books, I kept changing the name in my head. :-)

After many years of playing role-playing games from all mediums, I found that most of them at some point require asking favors of or gaining information from some random local who is apparently always in the taverns (usually intoxicated), and that person somehow has a direct connection to exactly the things the PCs are looking to do. I always thought this concept was absurd (how would random local tavern person know that), so I began placing random experts of X subject in taverns in some tabletops I DM'd, which became a running joke. When I joined Alliance, I decided to try playing one of those tavern experts for the great RP it could potentially have, and after adding in a penchant for gambling and other tavern-related activities, the end result is Cho Ko Nu.

Aara was just an aspect of me that I inflated to epic proportions - then when Miko Miyazaki showed up in OOTS I was pretty much sure she was based on Aara. Her recent trauma has left her a *bit* more like Luna Lovegood, however. Though that wasn't exactly intentional, but it was kind of funny once it was pointed out :)

Taryn isn't based on a character, she's also an aspect of me turned up to 11. Though, Queen's song, "Killer Queen" was definitely an inspiration.

Tho the initial concept was much different, these days Amaranthus is Micheal Weston. Burned spy in way over his head, and still using the tricks of the trade to get the job done.

I played Rhys before I saw Firefly, but there's a big similarity between him and Malcolm Reynolds. Sprinkle in a little Han Solo, Jack Sparrow, and a couple of chunks of Braveheart, and you've got a good start. :)

Snow is loosely based upon a werewolf Fianna Ahroun I used to play. Character comes into game July.
Resistance fighter (IRA) that found a pack and something more to fight for with his brother. He has no problem letting others lead, until things need pounding...then he steps to the fore and barks orders.

My son wants to play a sarr (which will make an interesting twist) and I am coming into game with a few other wylderkin, so we are thinking about working some additional background together still.

Cats and dogs, living together! Mass hysteria!

No more than a cat and a rat.

Dr. Venkman made no mention of that.

Maybe he should have. Krieger and Slice cause enough mass hysteria to fuel a space shuttle some times. ;)

My character has roots in the mercenary guild as described in By The Sword by Mercedes Lackey, with a healthy salting of meso-american and persian influence, as well as my own feline proclivities.

Lackey's Tarma and Kethry stuff is a really good inspiration for how to make a guild system that works like it should, rather than being oppressive power blocs.

I highly agree. It gets featured a bit more in By The Sword, the story of Kethry's grand daughter. Some of the writing may be trite, but I do enjoy Lackey's take on high fantasy.

I have an original print Queen's Own trilogy in hardcover as well as Exile's Honor signed by her.

Nice! The Gryphon series is my favorite of her work. Lackey's not High Literature, but she writes an interesting world with pretty vibrant characters. I sometimes wish more RPG designers would put the level of detailed thought into their worldbuilding that fantasy authors like to.

The Rivan Codex by David and Leigh Eddings is a chronicle of the worldbuilding background that went into their Belgariad and Mallorean series' (10 books plus 2 related histories).
