Question: tag vs phys rep

You would no longer have the magic item if this occurred in game. If you were moving OOG and it was lost by movers, then it's a case by case basis.
However if you have the phys rep, but lose the tag, then more times than not Plot will reprint your tag for you as long as you have the physical item.

Edit: Also look at it in a way that a PC can't steal an MI tag. They have to steal the rep. However, if Plot ask you for the tag, as an MI was found/taken, then you have the below options:
1. Give up the tag, and you can try to locate your missing item IG.
2. Have the rep returned to you; however you no longer recognize that particular item if it appears in game with a different rep.
