Setting off traps at range

I've heard from a lot of folks that they've been getting told that setting off a trap with a ranged attack somehow causes them to be hit by the trap.

I've read the rules regarding traps and the only thing I can find is that if a trap goes off, it hits everyone in five feet. So I can understand if it hits someone holding a pole that sets it off (because the pole is connected to the character and as a result, hits them as well), but if I throw an axe from ten feet away, I should be fine.

Can someone clarify if I am wrong?

IIRC it was ruled that the ranged attack does not cause the attacker to take damage. As long as there is no connection between the two, attacker and trap, then no damage to the attacker (unless within the 5').
