Traditionally a caster either adopts 2 patterns of buying spells. Either the column or the pyramid.

Is it possible to purchase spells up to a certain level and begin a new column without continuing to extend upward?

Ex.
5 5 5 5 5 5 5
4 4 4 4 4 4 4
3 3 3 3 3 3 3
2 2 2 2 2 2 2
1 1 1 1 1 1 1

My gut tells me this is possible but upon discussing this with other players they said it wasn't valid. I looked over the Handbook and was unable to find and expres forbiddance of this but that either that pattern of pyramid or column must be maintained. This seems to me to still be valid under column style spells but just tops off earlier.
 
You can't have more than two spells of a particular level without buying spells of the next level up.

Look on page 51 of the rulebook:
"Spell Slots are purchased in a proportional
pyramid as described in the examples below. If
you wish to buy a particular Spell Slot, you must
first have two more Spell Slots on the level
below in order to support it."

And:
"Further, the pyramid
must be constantly building, which means that
the level above must have only one less than
the amount you are buying.
So in order to buy a fifth 2nd level Spell
Slot, you must have a fifth 1st level Spell Slot
and a fourth 3rd level Spell Slot."

It's not 100% obvious from the description, but the figures on page 52 describe that there are pretty much only 2 patterns in which to build spells, ie columns (all the way up to 9) or pyramids.

(PS, I like the term "brick" to describe that build, though!)
