Spirit Farewell

If you cast a Spirit Farewell and the spirit is unwilling to be farewelled by you, are you aware that they have refused to be farewelled by you?

Specifically the reason I ask is because if the caster is aware, then Spirit Farewell could be used to find out if someone is permanently dead or not (did a bad guy *seem* to die but you're not sure? Cast a Spirit Farewell! If they show up, then you know!). Related question: would designating a non-permanently-dead spirit count as an invalid target, automatically backlashing?

If a Spirit Farewell is successfully cast, and the spirit does not appear, there are several reasons why this could be - the target may not be permanently dead, the spirit may be refusing to show up, or the spirit may already have answered a Spirit Farewell. The caster does not know which of these reasons might be the cause, and none of them will cause the Ritual to fail casting due to an invalid target.
