The Baronial Court of Rivervale is honored to host the School of Chivalry in New Acarthia. Once a month from April to November, these lessons are held for one hour at 10:00 on Saturday mornings in Deep Jugs Tavern while breakfast is served. All are welcome to attend; noble sponsorship is not necessary to participate. Attendance is mandatory for squires of the courts. These interactive discussions are usually quite lively, involving both nobles and commoners, and bring our community together in debate and better understanding.

For general consideration, here is the schedule of upcoming topics for the first part of the year. If you have suggestions or requests for items that we may cover in later lessons, I am delighted to receive your recommendations.

12 April - Matters of Noble Address and Title
This lesson will be repeated at the First Court of every spring, and is a repeat of the lesson offered in September 413. Discuss the background of and reason for Acarthian courtly manners as a system of offering respect to the Crown of Acarthia. Learn or practice the proper forms and customs to greet persons of various titles and stations among the nobility and commoners. Learn which titles to use, to whom to kneel or bow, and how to perform appropriate bows and curtsies. Practice good manners as the foundation for communicating respect in a civilized society. Variations of custom and etiquette among the baronies and subcultures of Acarthia will also be discussed.

17 May - The Art of Conversation and Reflections of Courtly Love
Discuss the Code of Chivalry instruction, "Thou shalt be generous and give freely to everyone," such as the gifts of time and patience in gentle discourse. Improve your ability to make easy conversation with fellow adventurers, or those you have just met. Comfortably draw others into your discussion to create a welcoming social environment. Ask the right questions, and learn how to glean information smoothly, as well as how to convey that information further in an efficient manner. Also, celebrate the joys of the month of May with a review of local customs for courtship and courtly love throughout Acarthia's baronies, and subcultures.

21 June - The Laws of Acarthia
Knights of Acarthia will review the laws of the land, and provide clarity on their meaning and distinction. Understand some history of Acarthia through our system of laws. Review the Code of Chivalry tenet, "Thou shalt scrupulously perform thy noble duties be they not contrary to the laws of the land." Understand the duties of the nobility both to follow the Code of Chivalry as law over our own actions, and our duty to uphold the laws of the land outwardly. Debate legal topics of note for the day, including recent clarification of the laws against Slavery.

19 July - The Geography of Acarthia
Examine various instructions (including the literal) found within the Code of Chivalry tenet, "Thou shalt love the country in which thou hast sworn fealty." Educate yourself about the lands of our great kingdom and this fair duchy around us, including its peoples, its estates, and features of interest. Examine detailed maps of the Kingdom of Acarthia and its environs, with particular attention to the Baronies of the Duchy of Acarthia and its ducal fiefs. Hear brief tales of local custom and interest from the baronies to better understand the rich cultures found within our borders.

In service to Acarthia and the Barony of Rivervale,
