Very New...

Hello all..I am just looking into this and it looks like something I would really enjoy participating in. I am afraid I am a bit of a dunce though, I have no idea about any of it and was wondering if anyone could point me in the best direction for how one gets started, if there's anything to read that clues a newbie in, and where I can go to participate? I live in Medford, Oregon. Thank you
