Say I'm fighting someone sword and board and I realize that my sword isn't effecting them. I then tuck my sword under my shield arm and prepare to throw a spell when the person smacks a slay into my shield. Do I take the slay as both my shield and sword are both being held by the same arm?

If your shield is hit, you don't take damage as you are wielding the shield
fine. However, if the sword is struck, you'll take the damage as you are not
wielding it properly. Note that if you hold the sword in the same hand as the
shield is held in, you'll then take damage if either is hit.

Under the arm = holding a weapon out of the way (not legally wielding, so you
take damage if it's hit)

In the hand with another weapon = illegally wielding both weapons
