3 Point Washer Armor

The rules state that 3 point armor must be made with "...heavy metal chain mail 14 gauge or thicker with an inner diameter 5/8" or smaller ,and heavy metal plate mail 18 gauge or thicker." Given this definition, would it be possible to make 3 point washer armor with 14 gauge washers being sewn in a tabard or shirt? If so, how close would they need to be sewn together to cross 2 point territory and go into 3?

The total coverage must be at least half of the armor location; whatever distribution of the washers meets that requirement is fine. Bearing in mind the holes in the washers you just need to ensure that 50% or better coverage.
