Every event, the plot team, adjuncts, and some players help and come up with what I have nostalgically called "FISHBOWLS." The idea stemmed from an idea where we used to keep a plastic fishbowl on the plot desk and whenever we would come up with fun ideas for pure RP, we would jot them down and throw them into the fishbowl to be run at random. We run roughly 18-24 of these an event, depending on personnel and time constraints. Some are run during meals, late at night, often throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, behind buildings in alleyways (Cough sheep), etc... They help to flesh out the populace of the larger town that we don't often get to phys rep. It makes you feel that there are more people about the place! Almost none of these lead to mods of any sort. They are for fun RP mostly.

Here are a few picked at random:

Fishbowls

  1. Manufacturing Love: A person, Jamie Macintyre has fallen out of love with their partner, Ashel Macintyre, and wants to love them, so is looking for a supply of Love potions and Love Potion #9 in particular. Maybe if they experience the feeling of love they can keep it up. NPC: _________________________________________

  2. Morbid Curiosity: A wealthy horse-merchant’s child, Tam Silver, from a safe small town in the middle of Acarthia (Warwickshire, Acarthia), has heard that some people in New Acarthia actually turned into undead! And then resurrected! They are really morbidly curious about all the grisly details: Did you feel your flesh rotting? Did you know you had no will of your own? What was it like to die? They’re really interested in all the details and morbidly fascinated. They do not want to be undead and do not favor necromancy; they think it’s wrong and delightfully shocking. It’s just the allure of the taboo and their sheltered life; it’s so fascinating and horrible and exciting! NPC: _________________________________________

  3. Goat Farmer: Capra, a local goat farmer (with read/write and first aid) would like to learn healing for use around the farm. They have only a few copper (provided from NPC camp) but are willing to do some odd jobs in exchange for teaching in Healing Arts and the first level of Earth Magic. Should not start at Tavern but wander between cabins and ask for directions. Does not want to be a member of the Healers Guild, simply wants a little healing magic. NPC: _________________________________________

4. Lockpick Recruiter. NPC must have lockpicks, knowledge of lockpicking, will take lockpicks and a few example locks. Grell, a member of the locksmith’s guild, is looking for people who want to learn legerdemain. Has a few example locks, will teach it as an in-game skill to people for a small fee. NPC: _________________________________________

"Why are you telling us this" you ask? Because the plot team spends hours upon hours before every event coming up many of these throughout the year (as do those mentioned above who volunteer a few here and there) and we thought it would be awesome if more would help us out!

THE CHALLENGE:
Come up with 60 of these in the format above before April 1st. If you are serious, and you think you have the writing chops to tackle this, contact me privately about possible rewards. AllianceDen@gmail.com

Wait, there's more???

YES!

Many of you mod hounds out there LOVE hunting down mod cards from the time the sun comes up until it's time to leave the site on Sunday!! Originally, at HQ, we only ran 2-3 mod cards an event because we wanted them to feel amazingly special when you found them, and because the specifically hooked mods always take precedence. In Denver, we will always run more specifically hooked mods during an event, especially ones that are related to the event itself, than we will random cards. However, due to popular demand, we have been running 8-14 an event. The ones that are related to our plots are easy for the team to come up with, however, this is a big place!!! Other random things happen often out there! We need your help in coming up with them! Here are some old mod cards for examples:

3. You see up the road a pair of gnolls chewing on an unidentifiable carcass while a gigantic, feathered bear with a beak and long claws seems frozen, watching helplessly. If you wish to interact, take this card and send a runner with it to NPC camp.

(3) "You see up the road a pair of gnolls chewing on a carcass while a gigantic, feathered bear with a beak and long claws seems frozen, watching helplessly." This is a timed mod. The bear is a howl bear (sans engulf, sans resist poison) that was hit 4 minutes ago by a paralysis gas poison from one of the two gnolls (a gnoll alchemist). The gnolls are letting it watch them eat its prey before they killing blow it and eat it as well. If the players approach they will immediately attack, but if the howl bear wakes up all bets are off and they will simply try to run faster than the PCs (away from town, of course). The NPC playing the howl bear will also not go near town under any circumstances (it doesn’t want to go around people in general unless it is going to eat them).

5. An unarmed green warty biped sits by the side of the road with a sign that says “Spell Ink for sell.”If you wish to interact, take this card and send a runner with it to NPC camp.

(5) An unarmed green warty biped sits by the side of the road with a sign that says “Spell Ink for sell.” The goblin–who is Search and Steal vs. coin–is a (hob)goblin caster of some variety (statted for PCs, so probably a Hedge Wizard, Naysayer, or Strategist) who will claim to be selling “spell ink” “CHEAP! 1 small shiney only!” They will then proceed to spell “ink”-”I… N… K!” and, seeing where the PCs keep their shinies, will first see if they want the goblin to spell more things in exchange for shinies. Once the PCs move aggressively or turn around and to leave the goblin will try to take the REST of their shinies. The goblin may have 2 hobgoblins as backup waiting in the woods. Goblins are members of the Tough Guyz.

  1. The air is cooler here. Mist pools in the deep shadows. You catch a glimpse of watching eyes in the fog. If you wish to engage, take this card and send a runner with it to NPC camp between 10 AM and 4 PM on Saturday or 10 AM and 12 PM on Sunday.

  1. The air is cooler here. Mist pools in the deep shadows. You catch a glimpse of watching eyes in the fog. Mist lynxes are hunting, stalking the PCs. They will attack. If the lynxes start significantly losing, they will attempt to flee. When they flee or are killed, the mist clears and components can be found where the mist was.

2. You hear angry guttural shouting in the near distance, crashing in the bushes, and high laughter. You glimpse a small red figure careening through the woods. If you wish to engage, take this card and send a runner with it immediately to NPC camp; do not collect more people or belongings (if it is between 10 AM and 4 PM on Saturday or 10 AM and 12 PM on Sunday). If you do not engage then shred this card.

(2) You hear angry guttural shouting in the near distance, crashing in the bushes, and high laughter. You glimpse a small red figure careening through the woods. A kobold, Cackler, played a prank on a local orc tribe for Hobling Prankster’s Day. Cackler put nausea poisons in the tribe’s food and drink, and trapped their camp with vertigo gas tripwires. The handful of unaffected orcs are enraged and chasing Cackler for revenge. Cackler will try to hide behind PCs and get PCs and orcs to attack each other (e.g.: “They paid me to do it,” “I got the alchemy from them,” etc).

THE 2nd CHALLENGE: Come up with 40 of these in this format by April 1st! They can also contain more than one encounter. If you are serious, and you think you have the writing chops to tackle this, contact me privately about possible rewards. AllianceDen@gmail.com

The gauntlet has been thrown!!! :)

Please please PLEASE also include with your fishbowl submissions the following:
  • A gender-neutral name for the characters involved (or one masculine name and one feminine name) so that any NPC portrayer can play the fishbowl and won't have to think up a name on the fly (this is harder than you might think!). This website is fantastic for names.
  • Try to stick mostly to humans. The estate of New Acarthia is predominately human; non-humans are less common. The "default" race for NPCs in New Acarthia is human. (This is not always the case when we are in other locations, of course, but the majority of the campaign is in New Acarthia.)
  • If the character is from outside of New Acarthia, please list where they're from and the briefest blurb on that location so that the portrayer will have some context and something to go on.
Thank you!
