HBO has greenlit production on the pilot for a fantasy drama series, "Game of Thrones," based on a book series by George R.R. Martin.

Variety says the pilot for the long-gestating project was written by feature screenwriters David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Former HBO entertainment president Carolyn Strauss will serve as a co-executive producer, along with Guymon Cassidy, Vincent Gerardis and author Martin.

HBO acquired the TV adaptation rights to Martin's "Songs of Ice and Fire" book series nearly two years ago. The pilot for the HBO show is described as an exploration of "an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom."

Benioff's recent credits include penning the screenplay for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Weiss recently sold bounty hunter thriller Kashmir to Relativity Media and is writing a prequel to Will Smith's I Am Legend for Warner Bros.

there is a heaven. and HBO is it.

Here's hoping the pilot's good enough that they greenlight the series, and that GRRM gets off his kiester on the last books.

HBO's series and shows are usually of the hightest quality. I haven't read the books, but this sounds like it could be pretty good.

I just hope it doesn't end with a Soprano's blackout. Damn them!

Scott

The books are AMAZING. Dark, realistic fantasy in a low (at first) magic world. It's a "historical" type series, so be prepared to find out exactly what type of food is served at every meal. The story is mostly political intrigue for the first couple books, but the battle scenes are exceptionally written. I think you'd really enjoy em Scott.
I'm psyched for a series to come out, but HBO previously said they wouldn't do the series until the books were complete, and the books are taking progressively longer to come out with 2-3 books left to go in the series, dunno if HBO changed their stance on this.

Just don't get attached to all the people you think might be main characters ;-)

And remember, House Lannister is the most virtuous and moral of all the Houses of Westros.

Pretty much yeah. ALL the noble hoses are frakked up, so in comparison House Lannister ain't so bad. Let's discuss:

Tywin Lannister- The ablest Hand to serve in the past century, he gave the realm 20 years of peace and plenty when the Kingdom was ruled by a madman.

Jaime Lannister- While he's undeniably an incestuous oathbreaker, he saved the city of King's Landing at the cost of his personal honor.

Tyrion Lannister- Not a bad guy, if you discount the whoring.

Circe- Douche

Let's contrast them with the "Good guy" family:

Eddard Stark- Not a lot bad to say about him, but he's dead.

Robb Stark- Usurper of half the continent, lost his Kingdom because he couldn't keep it in his pants.

Arya Stark- 10 year old Serial Killer

Sansa Stark- Perrenial victim and pawn

Bran Stark- Cripple who uses a mentally challenged person as a wheelchair.

Rickon Stark- he's 5, not sure what unsavory qualities he has besides temper issues.

Catelyn Stark- Threw away her son's only chance to win a war for a 14 year old girl.

Jon Snow- Wait, he's paternally a Targaryen, he's allowed to be crazy.

Lannister ain't looking so bad.

should we move this to a new topic? I can geek out over this series for days.

PS- Most of that was exaggerations and gross generalization, rely on my character bios at your own risk.

you should come play the board game with us sometime. intense.

I actually own it, but Twilight Imperium kinda kicks it's arse if you're a board game nut.

ps- scoff if you will, but the best board game I've found in the past year is "That's my Fish!". It's about penguins and it's AMAZING if you're into spacial strategy, almost as good as Rumis.
