A Topic to Ponder

Would you continue to play alliance if all PCs and all characters where wiped out and you had to start 'fresh' and on equal footing with everyone else? To avoid later need to clarify, your Gobbie stamps would remain, but gobbies could only be spent on logistics production at events (No magic items etc.) and for basic blankets/death buybacks.

I predict that some answers may indeed provoke some interesting discussion...

(My first time throwing a topic to the random masses of Seattle, so be nice  )

Possibly. I'm notoriously moody.

Yes and no. I have 3 characters in the DB, each of which I've played pretty extensively (the newest is 2 years old, one is in semi-retirement but I played him regularly for 4+ years, and I've been playing my primary for about 12 years now). I've played from 1st level, 5th level, and 10th level (as my two non-primary characters started from 'gobby banks' I built up over time).

I have to say that I do not consider 1st level "fun" under the current Alliance ruleset. I've done it, but the system just doesn't do it that well. If everyone were to start at 1st level, I don't know that I would enjoy participating.

If, on the other hand, everyone started off at say 3rd, so you can actually *do* something your first event, I'd be much more interested in this idea.

Maybe. I only have one character and I have invested a lot of time and money into him. I'm not sure how I would feel if he suddenly went *poof*, especially since I have been playing him for about 8 years now. But, if it happened to everyone I would consider it.

ABSOLUTELY! Especially since my lvl 25 char of the past 7 years permed on Sunday  .

I can have fun playing any character any time, and starting over is no big woop for me. Just gotta get going on new costuming!

Maybe.

I like my character, not the numbers on the sheet or the other numbers on individual tags, but I like the character and the relationships and the like.

Additionally, I don't generally like trying to figure out from the very start all the small intricacies of characters from the get go, much less trying to figure out a name I'm okay with again.

So, stat/magic item wise, yes, character all together... ehhhh.

If all of my characters went poof I would be a very un-happy camper. I spent four years getting two of my characters to tenth if they went away all of the time and effort I put into them would just be wasted. I am just starting to get powerful enough to go on hardcore mods. I like the idea but don't want my characters to go poof.

Now if some one were to say start up a separate campaign where we all started as low level people I would be so game.

While it would be interesting, say, to be in a campaign where we all started fresh and on equal footing, I probably wouldn't play Alliance with the question as stated. Simply, because I've invested too much time in my character, I wouldn't want to lose it to a database wipe. Character death due to combat or RP, I'm okay with. Character death to database wipe, I'm not okay with. I would find that too souring and it would make me leave Alliance.

As long as I would have the option to play my character again (even if I had to give up all my loot), then I'd probably be more open to starting at level 1, with the idea being that once the average character level of the game reached my character's current level, I'd be allowed to play that character again. Mind you, more open to the idea, not necessarily like the idea.

Note: In case it comes up... My character is only 12ish, so I theoretically wouldn't have a long wait with the idea that I find more acceptable.

True, would be much better to just do a set-aside restart. A lot of people would resent losing all their character's history and accomplishments in one fell swoop that didn't involve IG reasons. Knowing their beloved characters with all their background, costuming, and gear were safely tucked away somewhere I bet most people would be cool with playing fresh new characters, at least part of the time.

I think I would much rather a "set-aside reset" as mentioned. Level cap the games and restrict gobbie expenditures and I'd roll with it.

It's one thing to have your character PD at a game or willingly retire it. It's quite another to suddenly, for no legitimate reason aside from "zomg reset", lose the character you've spent so much time, money, and effort building.

It's not an especially viable option. Consider all the money, time, RP history, game interactions, etc, that people have put into their characters, and I think that there will be a significant hit to the player turnout. At that point, there's no reason to play Alliance over any other game. Plot-wise, short of ownership coming down with a "All plotlines must be wrapped up by X date" dictum, set far enough in the future, you'll never have a good time to actually do a reset, considering the sheer number of plot teams involved.

Generally, when I'm feeling too uber, I play a lower level character. I don't necessarily need everyone else to be at my level. If a game wants to have a level capped event, they can, and accomplish basically the same things without hosing anyone.

Personally, it's entirely possible that I'd stop playing. If my involvement with the game were removed (which is really what you're asking), it's entirely likely that I'd play another game. (Though that is heavily influenced by the existence of a newer larp in the area that I, and a fair number of other players, are already interested in playing.)

Personally, there's a good chance I'd stop playing over a forced reset. I nearly did quit over some recent trouble with my main being based in the old Kzoo database and taking several months to get a workable copy out thanks to shenanigans on the part of the old management. Too much time, money, and effort invested in my characters and their equipment and garb to willingly redo it all for no reason.

I don't like the current Alliance ruleset enough to be willing to slog through from first level again with the current balance, when inevitably we're going to end up in the same situation we have now, just with a few different faces at the top of the PC food chain. If the issues with the game's playability at mid to high level and class balance were resolved, I'd be a bit more willing, but still much more comfortable with a 'world changing event' meta-plot and an Alliance-wide character rebuild of some sort. If I was going to have to start over entirely, I'd be looking for another game that would allow me to play in a different direction, rather than repeating the same fun but occasionally massively frustrating steps.

Trouble getting your character from another chapter is one of the many many reasons you should *always* keep your character card after an event.

Yeah, Kzoo collected them, then I moved to Texas and didn't get to play for a couple years while the chapter went under after allowing a lot of things it shouldn't have. I understand the delay entirely, just resented it in a theoretically 'national' game.
