AFK Tavern/Recruitment possibilities?

I was wondering if it was feasible/possible if we could partner up with AFK Tavern about putting on a recruitment drive.

In my experience, the three things that tend to prevent someone from trying a LARP is

1) cost.

2) not wanting to be "one of those guys."

3) not wanting to try it by yourself for your first game.

A lot of players who aren't currently part of the LARPing community probably don't realize how cheaply they could try this game for NPC'ing. I also figure that a lot of people who frequent AFK probably don't have an issue with #2 (and may do other similar things themselves, like other LARPs, Faires, re-enactments, or theater). Also, people at AFK tend to go with their friends...who may also be interested in giving Alliance a shot!

We can even sell them on the fact that their first PC game is 50% off! At the very least, they can get our website information, and if they pay attention, I honestly believe they'll be more inclined to give it a shot.

Maybe we can even negotiate some sort of coupons with AFK for first-time players ($5 off a $25 meal or something).

I know a few of us don't live impossibly far from AFK, either.

I have all their contact information since ASGS does a fair amount of business with them.

We could try to set up an OOG event with them to recruit people, maybe. What exactly did you have in mind? Downsides, they are crazy loud and cramped in there, especially on the weekends. The few times I have talked LARP there, people didn't react super positively.

We could probably pick a better place to serve our needs of recruitment. We could throw a faire day/BBQ at a public park. That way we could demo combat if asked and we wouldn't have to partner with anyone. This could be a bring your LARP-curious friends type of thing. On the right day, you could get the majority of staff to show up.

The problem with bringing my LARP-curious friends is that pretty much everyone I'm friends with has been exposed to the possibility of LARP-ing. In fact, I have at least two people that are interested in trying the next Seattle Gameday, before being willing to try a full event.

I think going to a setting like AFK/Faire/etc is that you may be exposing the game to a great deal of people who've never really had the opportunity to look into it. I agree that it's loud and crowded, but I think it needs to be shown to relatively new faces, is all I'm saying. :)

That makes sense. Well I know we are increasing our presence at conventions, which means renfaires aren't far off. If you want to organize a thing at the AFK, I would be willing to help.

I am totally going to get inspired by your idea and throw an Alliance Seattle BBQ and recruitment drive.

Okay, let's level this idea up. You have a couple of really good points, in that AFK is loud and crowded. Plus it doesn't give us ample location for combat practice/demonstration.

How about flyers inviting people to a BBQ, like you mentioned? We have a few people giving them out at AFK, giving basic information there, but not so much it gets lost in the noise. People show up at the designated location, do a little sparring, get information as how to go an event...voila, new players. I think AFK is just a good place to contact people. Also, players could just hand flyers to their friends or acquaintances.

I'm not super familiar with the area, but we should do it near AFK, since people who are there are already willing to drive approximately that distance. Are there any good parks nearby?

Dude most people travel to get to AFK. It's kind of a one of a kind place. I think the Redmond/Kirkland/Bellevue area would work. We can also do it at the old spot in Seattle. That way we can recruit in multiple areas and have one central location to meet.

Being intimately familiar with AFK's immediate area, I don't think hosting it in the general vicinity of AFK is promising...Legion Park is north, and a bit annoying to get to, to be honest, without missing the entrance. Forest Park is relatively close, but it's also sorta small.

I'd also like to recommend McCollum Park. It's got a pretty big open area.

What's that great spot in Shoreline, near where Kirstin and Nate live?
