Age limit

Hello!

I have an 11-year-old son who is wanting to LARP, or at least become as involved as he can at his age. Is there anything that an 11-year-old can do with regards to LARPing? We are in Traverse City, MI, so he'd be participating in the local chapter here.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cindy

You should drop down to the Traverse City forum below the general discussion on the main page, and ask that chapter's folks directly. They're nice people, and will certainly have an answer for you!

The Traverse City chapter will have full answers, but I suspect, at that age, unless Traverse City has a VERY flexible page policy, the best he will be able to do is watch people play the game. The usual age for even limited participation is 14 and some chapters that age is 16 (mainly due to insurance policies).

The trouble with having very young players is that one needs to be able to really 'buy into' what may seem like or feel a 'silly' make believe pretend environment for it to be 'real'. It requires a certain level of maturity to engage in that environment constantly for an entire weekend while still being able to 'snap out' for the purpose of holds or realizing it is 'just a game' for whatever reason.

The game is also fairly complicated and I'd be worried that an 11 year old, no matter how mature might just be plain overwhelmed.

We have a number of pages in OR/Seattle around that age. Our page policy allows for it. Other than the parents having some added stress at games, it has not negatively impacted the player base. It is on the parents to decide if their child is ready for this kind of event. You may page (with a parent or guardian present) as early as 8 and required to be a page until age 14.

OR and Seattle share this policy for pages:

Thank you so much for the responses!! I'll check out the forum on the Traverse City chapter. Even if it's just taking him to watch, that's fine for now. He's suddenly developed a great interest in it, but I'd like him to see it live in order for him to absorb all that it has to offer. Thanks again!
