Anime

So after owning it for about two years, I've finally started Bleach (subtitled).

Its awesome!!! Almost as good as Full metal Alchemist.

Does anyone have any others to recommend? (I'm a subtitled snob btw.)
I've seen a bunch, but I'm on the lookout for new stuff.

"Evangelion Neogenesis" is, perhaps, the best anime I've ever seen - well worth checking out. "Trigunn" is a lot of fun as well, amusing and heartfelt (i've seen the dubbed version and 'twasn't all that bad, even though i'm a sub-snob like you). "Akira", of course, need say no more 'bout that. i've heard the "Samurai Champloo" and "Cowboy Bebop" series are astouding as well, though i've never seen them

just so long as you stay away from anything "Dragonball" related, you should be fine (it's absolute schmaltz - not worth the hydrogen use to burn it)

Sadly, I have seen all of those, including the dreaded Dragonball. Have you heard of Chevalier Dion? I've been trying to get my hands on it for a while now..

Evangelion was awesome: Asuka was definitely my favorite. I found trigun slightly boring, but it was probably because I saw it a long time ago, and just couldn't get into it so much. Samurai Champloo and Cowboy bebop however were very awesome, though I still haven't seen the very last episode of CB. Akira, however , is a given :)

I should've warned people before starting this post; I've seen a lot of anime :) so I'm looking for more of the 'hasn't been released in the US yet' sort of stuff. But you're right Mobius, all of those were very good :)

I dont really like bleach much..I think it is because I can guess what will happen like 10 episodes ahead (plus baddies are awsome till they are friends..then they suck).. Cowboy bebop is my favorite, though it may be because I watched it when I was younger.. I am watching Avatar the last airbender now, though it isnt really anime, and has a bit of immature humor. It is suprisingly creative though. I cant guess what will happen. Though I hate how awsome the writers try make the main baddies(a normal anime thing though)

I've always liked Cowboy Bebop...

I saw some of my friends playing Pokemon. I had to check it out because I haven't played with Pokemon cards since the fourth grade when there were a mere 150 to know and love....now there are some 300 odd each dumber than anything I could have respected when I loved it back then. :(

I'm a big animation fan -- in fact, I started an animation magazine back in the 80s that did very well -- but the only anime I have ever liked is not really anime, even though it's from Japan: it's the work of Miyazaki -- Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky and so on.

I especially like howls moving castle. Though all of those are fantastic.

I started watching this with my daughter. As the series progresses, it gets better and better. Some of the themes are pretty cool, too. I think it's one of the best non-anime animations out right now.

If you like Bleach, I think I'd recommend Claymore. It's a lot more bloody and violent though, so I won't recommend it to for Dave and his daughter.
Along ninja lines, Nabari no Ou is new and looks interesting.
Scrapped Princess is a good one to check out with a fantasy theme.
A Funny Sci-Fi anime series worth watching is Martian Successor Nadesico. (Movie is nothing like the series though. It's serious as opposed to funny.)

Haven't watched much lately though. A good source is animesuki. They list only the shows that aren't licensed in the U.S., have fansubs and links to show synopsis.

If you like Hayao Miyazaki you may like his anime/movie Princess Mononoke.

AMV Hell 0 for those who have a strong stomach:)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is awesome. As is Black Lagoon, Code Geass, Noein, Gilgamesh (Though the art style is quite hard to get used to), Elfen Lied (for those who thought EVA wasn't depressing enough), Shojou Kakumei Utena (Yes, it's shojou. Yes, there's pink and roses. No, it is NOT cutesy. It is awesome, with swords. And the Akio Car.)

I have to admit I started my anime kick with some of the older stuff.. the Original Astro Boy, Mazinger Z, Battle of the Planets (AKA: Science Ninja Team :Gatchaman), Robotech: Macross Saga, Gail Force, Vampire Hunter D, Record of the Lodoss Wars......The original Ghost in the Shell movie....Sabre Knights

I remember watching Mazinger Z in "Spanish" in Puerto Rico with english subtittles..back in the late 1970's along with Ultraman and Astro Boy

Avatar, once one accepts the fact that the creators have to please a kid audience as well as a huge adult (and young adult) fan following, is an amazing show. I highly reccomend it to anime fans and anyone who breathes. Nevermind, I reccomend that the undead watch it too. The fight scenes are better than I've seen in a load of *real* japanese anime, and the writing is great. The villains have characters, the characters have development, and the plot intricacies abound (if you know where to look for them). Thus far, the third season has kind of got me worried, but I'm anxiously awaiting new episodes in July.

You should also get used to waiting if you plan on watching avatar..Huge amounts of time can take place before new episodes come out..Though If you start now it wont matter. This is the last season(which sucks btw) Though I hear rumors of spinoffs.

Fans of Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki's studio) should check out the Earthsea movie (Gedo Senki) put out by Miyazaki's son last summer. The copyright is still in force for another year or two in the US, but I recommend checking it out when it gets released here.

Really, Bleach is turning into DBZzzzz at this point. They made the mistake of passing the source manga without any plans for plot, so had to do a 'filler' season that was really bland and didn't change the status quo at all because it really couldn't. I watched 160 episodes before giving up on it as nothing at all is happening. The Soul Society arc (the first part of the show) is pretty good, though.

I have to chime in on Neon Genesis Evangelion, though. It really isn't that good, in my opinion. Worth watching through once, sure, but the pacing and plotting of the episodes in the last half of the series suffer in comparison to the first part, and it really goes off the deep end in quasi-existentialism later on.

Things I recommend :
Trigun - Action/comedy western, with serious philosophy hidden beneath.
Cowboy Bebop - Retro-futuristic bounty hunters trying not to starve. Real art.
The Slayers - Seriously. If we could animate Alliance games, they would look like this.
Bastard! - D&D meets hair metal.
Hellsing - For mature audiences only. Here be vampires.
Excel Saga - Sheer madness. The sub and dub are both too good for words. Comedy ahoy.
FLCL - Pull-started guitars and robots coming from foreheads. You'll want to watch this twice to catch everything.
The Ultimate Teacher - A half-roach, half man teacher. Lucky Kitty Gym Shorts. This thing is twisted comedy genius.
Tenchi Muyo! - The first series only, the current GXP stuff is crap.
Outlaw Star
Gundam Wing - Good plot, beautiful mecha, political intrigue... what more could one ask for from Gundam?
Fushigi Yuugi
Black Lagoon - Serious modern series about smugglers in the Caribbean. MA for violence.
Witch Hunter Robin - Modern world with the supernatural playing a big part, interesting art style.

Wow. I always forget how much of this stuff I've watched. His Lordship Carnage has a lot of reviews that are helpful. They're a few years old, but so is my taste in anime, as you can tell.

I own all of Shojou Kakumei Utena. Big surprise, right Perry? :)

Thanks guys, that's an awesome list; oh, and Mike V: Studio Gibli still technically qualifies as anime. I'm just angry that Disney (from what I remember) is their rights owner in America, so its hard to get copies of the subtitled versions of those movies. Although at least the dubbed version of Princess Mononoke had people who could actually act.

For any of you who have never seen it? The ORIGINAL Record of Loddoss War. Best. Anime. Ever, especially considering the time period it was actually released(I believe it was EARLY 90's in Japan, didn't port over til like 95-96, when I saw it the first time.) Its Dungeons and Dragons, gone anime :)
