Prologue
Five years ago, Duke Frost made recovering the lost barony of Trellheim one of his highest priorities. To this end, he moved his court and retinue to a manor house in the estate of Fairdale and ordered the nobility of Ashbury to provide additional support to the military efforts in the Contested Lands. The battle for Trellheim has not been an easy one. Interruptions and distractions have been constant, including the war with the Dominion and the more recent war with Galanthia. But, the tides of battle are finally siding with Ashbury.
An unexpectedly mild winter has proved beneficial to the ducal forces in the Contested Lands. Winter has always been an ally of the troll occupation. But instead of losing ground during this past season, the armies of Ashbury have driven the Troll forces into partial retreat. The war isn’t over, but Ashbury has gained a significant advantage.
Thus, it came as a surprise when scouts reported a very significant troll force less than a day’s march from Fairdale. While the destination of this troll army was easily confirmed, some unoccupied land a few miles distant from the center of town, the purpose was unclear. Cut off from all supply lines and reinforcements, the presence of this army in Fairdale spoke of desperation on the part of the Troll leadership.
Still, even a desperate act could be deadly. The majority of the ducal troops were more than two days away from Fairdale, fighting deep in the Contested Lands. Conveniently, Fairdale is the sometimes home of a majority of Ashbury’s best mercenaries. Using the resources available to him, Duke Frost has put out a call to arms. He has ordered all those sworn to him and requested all those willing to follow him to join him in battle against the Troll horde approaching. With less than a day’s notice, can an odd assortment of adventurers, mercenaries, and nobleman disrupt the machinations of an army?
OOG Note
After the first wave battle of the weekend, and for the remaining duration of the weekend, special effort will be made to have NPC enemies in the woods across the river at almost all times. All PCs are encouraged to make an effort to engage these NPCs so that their efforts to entertain the PCs are not wasted.
[While the timing isn't exact, PCs can start discussing this information in-game as of this posting.]
