Armor Problems

Greetings everyone,

I was hoping I would be able to get some assistance with a problem I have been having. To start off, I am a rather new player (I have only been larping for about 3 months now.) My current armor I have is quite mis matched, the chest piece is from a previous costume and the belt I made myself. IG my character is a thrown weapons specialist and with the bracers and chest piece I have been wearing I have found that I can't hit the broad side of a barn. It has lead me to opt out from wearing it thus leaving me quite squishy. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve, if I just have to practice in it more or if there are changes I should make to the bracers and chest piece that would give me a better range of motion.

Thank you
- Scarlet

You'd have to post pictures. I intentionally do not wear a bracer on my right arm so I can swing my weapon and throw daggers without the encumbrance of a bracer.

When I wear my plate chestpiece, I can swing and throw fine, however I do end up with some bruising/marks in the shoulder area from some weird angles I swing at. Mostly I recommend people do NOT wear armor that hinders any joints, as it slows you down or messes with movement.

Edit: Examples

Me in plate:

The armor's shoulder is far enough in that I have full range of movement. Only if I do a cross over swing do I collide with it.

Me in studded leather:

The sleeves are actually held on by two cords, to provide maximum flexibility.

Funny part is, the Plate set with the helmet on is 35, the studded is 30 (cant really see the studs on the upper legs in this image cause I just swung around to block a hit). Flexibility is king in this game, I just love how I look in plate personally.

With the rules doubling the value of the three torso locations, I find that it's best to focus on that area when designing/building armor. Additionally given the focus finesse/speed in our system, I also find it's best to leave at least your fighting/throwing arm unarmored.

What type of torso armor are you using now?

There are only one chest location. The other doubled locations are stomach, back and head.

Perhaps getting a chain coif may be helpful. My first set of armor was studded leather. Then to scale leather as it was more flexible so I didn't have the problems Eadar mentioned above with the shoulder area. Unfortunately that is a problem with plate.

You can even focus on legs, get a kidney belt for the stomach region and get a helmet.

Norman : I generally shy away from head armor, myself. It's worth a good deal of points, but at least for me the restrictions on vision, hearing, and breathing that it can impose are not worth the points. 6 extra armor doesn't make up for that assassinate you take because you can't watch your corners or hear a rogue coming. :)

To each their own. The 3 points of waylay protection that 6 extra armor protects against is always nice though.

It's true, but the gobbies to get a suit of Arcane are a lot cheaper than a nice helmet. ;)

Yeah but Arcane doesn't look as cool as a nice helmet. :p I should know, my head looks funnier than most helmets.

To each their own. I like to wear a nice looking suit of armor with the AA, since it wouldn't make the points I want and I don't like helmets. :)

I do the same thing. My leather armor is actually pretty heavy and slows me down a bit. But, just wearing leather isn't worth enough points as a max arcane armor.

I can see that the shoulder section can cause you some angle problems as its one solid piece of heavy leather. It would restrict getting the most arm raise. You may need to practice in it or have it modified to let your shoulder move more free.

Can you get a side shot? Looks to me like some of your bind may be at the front of the arm hole, you may need to cut it out with a bit of a deeper scoop.

I play an archer in a chest plate. The problem I had was in the front because I had nothing on my shoulders. It looks like you could trim a cup out of the front to get full motion front to back and the shoulder bits on the outer edge to give you up and down. Short of modifications you will have to practice underhand or side arm. Side arm is how I pitch me packets but I dunno how it will work for thrown weapons.

I would just like to say I don't think scarlet needs to much alterations any more, he set off a trap last month with a thrown dagger and knocked a packet out of the sky this past weekend. I've see him with some damn good aim lately and his practice is definatly shown... no matter which of his 100 armor/costume changes he goes through per fight lol.
