Arrested for Having my Sword outside in my yard

is it against the law in D.C to have a sword with our self in our own yard? :o

Really.

I just wanted to get some practice with my sword. Yes it was late at night. 2 in the morning, but iam in my yard. What wrong is that?

For people stuck in the city, whats the best suggestion for places we can all go to practice and join in the LARPing activities?
 
I can't imagine this is one of the Swords we use in alliance, Latex and pipefoam sparring reps arn't illegal anywhere....
 
2am, even being in your yard, could be against... damn, I can't remember the name right now... basically making too much noise at too late of a time. Public disturbance, that's it! It's considered a public disturbance even if you're on your own private property because other people can see/hear it. But being arrested? That's a bit stiff unless you were beligerent to the cops.

You should have a copy of the infraction and the code that is cited. You can then look that up somewhere or even call the police department and ask them what that code stands for.
 
Real steel? You're boned. DC is fierce about that- you really do NOT want to do stuff like that, especially at 2 AM.

A boffer weapon? Only if you're violating noise restrictions, really. But again, late at night is not when one should be making a disturbance. No joke.

There's at least a few LARPs in the greater DC area you can get your fix in with, though I don't think Alliance does TOO close.

(Being as I usually drive up from Fairfax to NJ, I'm no use. :) )

Hey can you pm me the info for some LARP groups in or near DC please.

Also yes, I did have my steel weapon but I wasnt making noise. just swinging it around my front yard to get practice.
 
If it was two cops in a police car I can give you the entire convo before they walked up to you, if it was one this could play out as his/her thought process:

Cop 1: "What the hell..."
(You swinging sword in front yard)
Cop 2: "Its two in the morning...what is this guy doing?"
(Radio call placed for possible disturbance)
Cop 1: "So...drunk or EDP?" ((EDP-Emotionally disturbed person))
Cop 2: "Let's go ask."

Suffice to say swinging live steel on the front lawn at 2am was not a wise move. They pretty much locked you up on suspicion you could be a danger to yourself or others. I'd say invest in a cheap latex sword and work at dodge, and block inside.

All it takes is one neighbor at 2 AM going "Hey, he's swinging a REALLY LARGE KNIFE AROUND" to get attention.

Especially after that fellow in Maryland literally killed someone (legally, in self-defense) with a sword a few months back.
