Late in the evening, a shadow starts to fall over the moon, creeping across from the edge over the course of about two hours. When the shadow has covered half the moon, it shifts from black to red. By the time the eclipse has reached its peak, the whole of the moon is illuminated in a deep blood red color.

Abruptly, the moon seems to shift, shake, and then suddenly disappear from the night sky. Its light is replaced by a deep blackness - it is impossible to tell if the moon is truly missing or if it has simply lost its light.

Twenty minutes later, as quickly as it disappeared, the moon returns to the sky. The blood-red shadow across it begins to recede. Over the course of the next two hours, the shadow shifts back to black and then fades altogether.
