Bloodsucker!: A vampire in Congress

I had this idea for a story (short story or novel) about a vampire who runs for the Senate...

I started making an outline with ideas and then thought "Wait, this is too obvious, someone must have done this already..."

Does anyone know? I don't seem to find anything on line matching this idea...

The closest I can think of is the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton and the Southern Vampire series by <I forget>, which was made into the HBO series TRUE BLOOD. Both deal with Vampires "coming out of the coffin", making the world at large aware of their existence. I've only read a few of the Anita Blake books and only seen the HBO series of the other. There are Vampires with position in the community in both, though I'm not sure about running for the Senate. TRUE BLOOD does show a group that lobbies for vampire rights, showing up on talk shows and news networks, but that's all I recall from there.

Anybody else with more info on these two? I know Susan used to be into the Anita Blake books, maybe she can chime in about the later books in that series.

In the anita blake books no vampire runs for office as central plot. There might be a side element that I don't remember but it wasn't central.

true bloods had vampire lobbiests (redundant anyone?) but no actual vampires running for office as I recall (never read the books)

I've read way more bad vamp novels than I care to recall at times and I don't remember this being central to any of them. Most of them are too busy with psychosexual stilted BDSM scenes to get into politics

Well, the idea here would be that he is doing it secretly. All politicians have skeletons in their closet -- my guy would literally have them. He wouldn't have sex scandals, he'd have scandals about political enemies who mysteriously end up dead from unusual blood ailments... There would be conspiracy nuts saying "Don't vote for him! He's a vampire!" and everyone else would laugh at them and so on.

Sounds like an interesting entrance to the genre honestly. I don't think its been done in any kind of wide circulation.

It might be interesting to have this the final twist, hm? The man character gets caught and then exposes all the other vampires in Congress, going back to Henry Clay or something....

Or maybe, as Heidi suggested, it has something to do with the Skull and Bones society!

Heck, write it as an alternate history painting Joe McCarthy as a tragic hero for trying to expose the real "Red Menace"

Or someone else from the same time period points out Vampires and the phrase "Real Red Menace" becomes the headline in newspapers and overshadows McCarthy.

I don't want to give away everything! I'm still working on the outline. I'll be sure to post the chapters as they are finished like I did with the other books.

But one of the book's taglines can be: "From the West Wing to the Bat Wing"
