Character Introduction via Ingame Boards: Lame, Cool, meh?

Hey all,

I am considering doing a winter character intro for my character on the boards, as an effort to:

Put my toe in the water and not come in with no connections to anyone, even minor
Have fun and hopefully create some

What do people think about a character introduction like this? What do people think about RP on the ingame boards in general? I know it is sometimes impossible to avoid some peoples toes getting stepped on and others super heroing on your post, but I am hoping that can remain at a minimum. Have people seen most attempts to board RP devolve this way or have people seen really cool ones> If so, what made it cool (you can included what made the lame ones lame as well).

I would appreciate as many opinions as I can, because I like the idea but if generally people are not a fan than I would not want to do something people would not enjoy. I know most chapters likely have different opinions here, just looking to get a general feel at the moment.

Thanks!

I've seen it go both ways so its up to you but if you want to make a splash, speak to your plot team at the chapter you plan on being a part of and see if they can maybe run something for you to help intro your character. A PC in another chapter I play in recently walked into game with a module in mind to offer folks and some great info for the PCs. It wound up great for the player and probably helped plot too.

In the end, do what you feel is best for your character.

If I was going to do that then it would have to be for a very specific reason. I wouldn't want the first time anyone knew about me to be in their dreams unless there was a strong association between my character and dreams or if you were trying to give some kind of advanced warning for something? I dunno, like I said, I would have a very specific reason to do that, but that's just me!

You could talk to plot and maybe make a good reason?

Re: Character Introduction via Ingame Boards: Lame, Cool, me

I've seen it work very well in the Seattle/Oregon chapters, but the key here is keeping it in character. The best ones are those who are dreaming "ahead" if you will, knowing where they're going and sending their dreaming selves there for a reason. If your character is one to do that, then by all means do that.

If you don't get a response, work THAT into your character as well. ;)

For practicality purposes, posting ahead can be exceptionally useful.

1) You get a semi-introduction. This can save you time by letting you "meet" a handful of people ahead of time, which can help you find people who might be fun to adventure with at an actual game....and possibly give you a guideline of what people to avoid. ;)

2) It definitely makes you look like an enthusiastic player, and I find that this can impact your experience with others in a positive way.

3) When you get to site (at least in Seattle/Oregon), it helps to know who you're bunking with ahead of time....especially since your character's stuff will already be there and whatnot, and you have to sleep somewhere! I feel that knowing ahead of time will make that game immersion a bit of a smoother transition, not to mention save you time that would otherwise be spent asking around for what's available. Less time looking = faster time getting into game. Especially when your garb is warmer than your normal clothes and it's a winter event......

Re: Character Introduction via Ingame Boards: Lame, Cool, me

It might work ok, but I would highly suggest not doing it before your plot team knows what you're playing. Trust me, it causes problems and can be no end of a headache for both sides.

All in all, this is a Live Action Role Playing game - most stuff should happen on stage. If you want your introduction to make a splash, on stage is the place to do it. The internet does not do tone well, and these boards don't show pictures very well, so you'll still have to do in person introductions regardless.

Re: Character Introduction via Ingame Boards: Lame, Cool, me

I think the most important thing is to make sure that your character history has been approved by the Plot Committee first before posting anything ... unless you're playing a standard "I was a farmer from a local town who has decided to be an adventurer". If you have something more -- a certain quest your character has or some sort of quirk that probably should be run by Plot first -- I'd stay away from posting anything and then later having to say "Never mind."

For example, if your character history has a vampire who killed your father and you're searching for his coffin (the vampire's, not your father) and you name the vampire in your story -- hold off posting. Maybe Plot already has a vampire that other players are seeking and it would be much cooler to tie their plot in with yours than have two vampires out there. That's why I'd try as much as possible to wait for approval first, as it can only make things better.
