Contest for LARP fans

My personal opinion, I don't think the "Hottest Gamer" contest is really for us. We try to make all players feel welcome at our games, and extra attention on looks beyond the "Wow! Cool costume/makeup!" is really not welcomed by many (and can turn away players in a heartbeat). We're here for a game, not a bikini-mail contest. People can do whatever they want of course, but I feel strongly enough on this issue that I felt the need to post.

It's gotta be difficult to make that argument when one of our chapters has a "Real Girls of Gaming" calendar which endeavors to "want to show how HAWT gamer geeks really are".

I'm not arguing against or in favor of either the calendar or the contest, just pointing out the inconsistency.

I posted before that was announced, and my opinion remains the same. It attracts the wrong crowd for the wrong reasons, and that's not what we are about. I think a chapter sponsoring that kind of contest as a fundraiser is, quite frankly, terrible public relations for the Alliance name. I know female gamers who refuse to larp because they have a perception of guys hitting on them all weekend and they just don't want to deal with that. I know other women who have tried larping (a non-Alliance game) once and never did again because that perception became an unfortunate reality. This isn't helped by the fact that others larps contain more adult themes and things like this reinforce that stereotype/perception. Alliance can and should be better than that.

I believe you're a couple years behind.

I can't fault the Unicorn City folks with thinking that the Alliance LARP crowd would be a friendly place to advertise their contest. We've had and continue to have similar stuff going on.

On the more personal note, I think a game which promotes and encourages violence as a means of conflict resolution more often than not probably shouldn't really get on a high horse about whether or not geek ladies can be attractive.

Mentioning "Alliance" and "PR" in the same post and it makes me show up... it's like saying Beetlejuice too many times.

JP pointed it out already: That arguement has been had already.

Their have been two printings of the calendar so far and, to my knowledge, the Alliance Crossroads game who utilizes it as a fund raiser has not seen its game suffer for it. I would ask that you AT LEAST take a look at the calendar and what the staff is using it to accomplish before you condemn it off hand.

Orcfighter: As both a Crossroads staff member and someone in the '10 and '11 calendars, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about how the calendar has affected both the game I play and my experiences chapter hopping. Feel free to PM me.

Anything, IMO, that gets rid of the "LARPers are too nerdy to function" stigma is good.

As the producer of the calendar in question, I would also mention that our goals are significantly different from a virtual "hot or not" contest. In fact, we've always had and will maintain the opposite goal.

Our piece, as a fundraiser for Crossroads, is intended to highlight and empower gamer women of all shapes, sizes and ages; whether traditionally skinny model-types or more Rubenesque in stature, it shows how beautiful and strong they are - also featuring "gamer profiles" for each woman taking part where they can feature their personality and interests within gaming. Big difference in form and intent between what we produce and a contest that's just going: "Hey, who do you guys think is hotter?"

Still waiting to hear that you guys are doing a male calendar as well. I've just been dying to know Tab's likes/dislikes, turn-ons/turn-offs and whether or not he supports world peace.

I concur - sounds like Crossroads is just discriminatory - only doing the Real GIRLS of Gaming. What about us guys? What if we want to be in a calendar? Where's our opportunity? :P

that goes for this contest too, from what i've read people are assuming it's only for girls, if someone can qoute if it is or not, then i believe guys are included in it

I think JP and I need to get shirtless and tackle this Real Dudes of LARP calendar thing... :shades:

I'm not scared of showing some leg.

Personally, I'm a little hurt that I haven't been asked. It is well known that I'll do drag, and am not afraid to shave things that may or may not get regular shaves.

Though I demand that it be tasteful and artistic.

I'm envisioning a black and white trifecta of yoga poses with Scott K, Sean M, and myself on a seaside cliff, during a hurricane, preferrably on fire. :emo:

Not to kill the jovial mood or anything, but the idea of having a Real Gamers calendar from the West Coast chapters is not a bad idea...I'm sure we could find suitable volunteers from both genders from amongst all the players.

There's even likely to be a professional photographer amongst us and if not, I can ask my brother who is a pretty good hobby photographer (he did my wedding photos) and played AD&D all through High School, so he knows kind of what we're about.
