Anyone have basic instructions or a photo of a crossbow?

My son is hoping to pass his advanced page test and chomping at the bit to have a crossbow, I however have no clue how to make this darn thing - thanks in advance for any links or info! :)
 
I posted a basic outline that I am going to follow (I am giving up on my javelin idea because without a foam core the distance vs accuracy is terrible).

What size, color, and design would he like?
