As a note, given the short time between now and the tourney event, this possible change is VERY unlikely to occur this year. Still, worth discussing while tourney is on the mind.
Right now, there are two events in the tournament that test weapon skill, one event that tests magical prowess (and only allows one team member to participate) and no events for alchemists.
My proposed change is to replace the current 3-Man Combat with a 3-Man Combat that includes all types of combat, not just weapon skill. Each round the team would be permitted to choose a different set of three combatants, if they wanted.
IMO
Advantages:
*Shows off the full combat skill of the team, not just weapon skills
*Allows every member of the team to potentially participate
*Spreads lost resources more evenly among team members
*Allows alchemists to participate in the tournament
*Allows multiple spell casters to participate more fully
*Probably more exciting to watch
*Racial abilities more likely to affect outcome of fights???
Disadvantages:
*Uses more daily resources
*Wealthier teams will have an advantage (though wealthier teams tend to be higher level teams, so this may already be true)
*Racial abilities more likely to affect outcome of fights???
Discussion Points
--What items should be allowed? Just mundane? Mundane and production point magic (potions/scrolls)? All magic items? Wands?
--Is the caster tournament still necessary with this change? Is this plus the caster tournament too great a drain on magic spells?
--Should swapping of players be allowed? If swapping is allowed, when/how is it announced?
--Anything else?
As mentioned, I like the idea because it truly shows off the teamwork of a team, not just the weapon skills. It also allows teams to be more flexible when forming (no longer necessary to have three competent fighters). And, to be honest, it gives players a chance to actually prove which team would win in theoretical matches/grudge matches, rather than simply theoretically discussing it online or after game at the restaurant Sunday night.
