European LARPs

Hi,

I may be going to Europe (for work & vacation) in July, and am considering extending my stay to include the largest LARP in the world (over 4000 participants last year...), Conquest of Mythodea: http://www.live-adventure.de/ConQuest_english/start.php

Has anyone been to this (or interested in joining me)? Or know of other Euro LARPs (maybe in France or the UK), preferably which don't require bringing much (tents, sleeping bags, and food are hard to pack...)?

Thanks,
Patrick (HQ player, sometimes Gettysburg and Crossroads)

I actually was at Mythodea last year- saved up for airline tickets and such and I'd wanted to go for years.

Do it. Just, seriously. Do it.

I went with these folks, and it made life a LOT easier. I had folks I at least had a passing acquaintance with, a tent already set up and ready to go since they had a rental company bring em in (ended up being nice and sharing it with an English fellow who was also a newbie, but I had plenty of room) and a group that was basically there so folks who were new to the whole EU LARP thing had a place to put their feet down. Rick and Anya are good peoples, made sure I didn't starve, burn, drown and in general had a good time. The locals are friendly (if you're not stupid), English is commonly spoken, and I managed to get up to my eyeballs in a plotline that had me about two words from being burnt alive by the Fire Camp getting blood samples for a town alchemist (er, Thief's Guild, the things you get into when you make friends at the saloon watching the fighting pit...).

This did involve significant amounts of mead, dancing girls, and bard-ery along with the rest...and Mythodea has a rather flexible character transfer plan, so if you wanted to bring over a character concept from Alliance? Doable, though mostly that's going to be you fitting to their rules system vs. them fitting yours.

One warning: Travel light and bring an extra big empty bag. I came with one and ended up shipping home a new suit of armor, a longsword, daggers all over the place, and enough souvenirs/kit additions that I had a crease in my shoulder for a day afterwards.

Thanks Talen!

I've just signed up and purchased my tickets :)

Let me know if you think of any more advice for me.

Patrick

Are you going with a group, or heading there solo? One of the reasons I signed up with the Expedition folks is because it meant I had folks I was familiar with going in. Mythodea has an English-specific official forum, which'll come in handy:

(And although it might not be for the brave of heart, there's actually a surprisingly decent number of German/Mythodea vets on -4Chan-, of all places. If you see a LARP thread on /tg/, ask questions there too. It's a popular subject.
