Day 3 Report:
Testimony continued regarding the issue of Baran “Bucky” Buchaneon.
Lady Liddia FallingStar made her way into the chambers, acknowledging each of the 13 Dukes and Duchesses before making her speech. Duke Kaarl Grimlock asked her to limit her testimony on the discussion of Baran Buchaneon, as her other testimony can be presented at a relevant period of time once this decision is made.
As Lady Fallingstar began, she insisted that Buchaneon be present during his own hearing. Duke Robert Turnsen remarked that he did not take a knee, didn’t come when he was summoned last time and is no longer a Duke, thus it doesn’t matter that he was not present. No motion was made to wait for Buchaneon to present himself. His Majesty Gregor Eisenhorn remarked that before things proceed, all Dukes should be aware that Liddia FallingStar had been stripped of her Knighthood for disobeying her Duke, not once but twice. Duke Maher Koshinari nodded and looked to Lady FallingStar. The room went ghostly silent for a few moments before Duke Raash spoke up, stating that she disobeyed him in a manner that was not relevant to the current proceedings, and while disappointment is in his tone, he motioned for Lady FallingStar to continue. Duchess Attwater stated that any further testimony should be considered, but taken based on actual evidence and not personal opinion. Duchesses Cybil and Crosspick and Dukes Eliason, Turnsen and Grimlock agreed. The King motioned for Lady FallingStar to proceed.
Lady FallingStar resumed, stating first that although Buchaneon was a slaver and had not bent his knee before the King, she was not there to comment on his actions, but on the events surrounding his capture, She spoke as a first-hand witness to the events the night of the alleged assassination attempt on Buchaneon, and confirmed the previous testimony regarding the Koshinari dagger, adding that a note was found attached to it detailing the mission of its wielder. She stated also that two bandits, last seen in the custody of Duke Raash, had been found carrying the dagger and presented notes taken during their interrogation. She concluded her remarks by reciting part of Wayside’s charter which grants members of the nobility the right to a trial, a right which she claimed had been subverted by His Majesty. Duke Basil Monteque stated that she had said all that was needed in regards to Baran Buchaneon and that further testimony could be presented later for other issues. Lady FallingStar began to speak, but graciously bowed and was escorted from the Chambers.
The last witness to speak was Circle Master Eric Marsters of the Greater Earth Guild of Terna, who confirmed the testimony of the other three regarding the Koshinari dagger. He claimed to have been present when the dagger was discovered, and stated that it was in the possession of an agent of His Majesty. Circle Master Marsters was asked to hold his remaining testimony until the following day.
With the relevant testimony concluded the Dukes proceeded to their discussion. Lord Maher Koshinari reiterated that Master Anto Koshinari had been forbidden to testify at the council, and submitted his objection to his testimony being considered as evidence. Duke Robert Turnsen of Eastwood agreed, adding that Lord Bluewater was a known adventurer and Lady FallingStar an admitted traitor, and moved to dismiss the testimony of all witnesses. Duke Raash stated that he trusted the words of the witnesses implicitly, adding that he himself knew His Majesty had wanted Buchaneon dead, and furthermore had also attempted to assassinate Raash himself and Duchess Maive Attwater of Targosia. Duke Grimlock stated that the only issue at hand was that of Buchaneon, not other events that may have happened later. He moved to first determine Buchaneon's guilt in the crimes for which he had been arrested. Duchess Attwater agreed, stating that it was well known that Buchaneon not only refused to show fealty to His Majesty as the other Dukes had, but also had legalized slavery against the Crown's orders, and had attempted to annex both Arcland and Targosia, despite already having the largest duchy. The other Dukes appeared to agree.
In the matter of Baran "Bucky" Buchaneon, the council made a unanimous verdict of GUILTY for the crimes of slavery and multiple counts of treason.
In the matter of his sentence, Duke Raash stated that Buchaneon had already been Obliterated in August, and thus had had his sentence carried out. Duke Turnsen stated that the Obliteration had been for helping Duke Raash's rebellion, and that another three deaths or more were warranted for his crimes. He added that letting Buchaneon go instead of permanently killing him would only cause more trouble with the Razorboars and others of his allies. His Grace Baron High Mayor Kender Hitchcock of Gatik agreed that Buchaneon's threat needed to be ended, but stated that exile would be enough to keep the peace in Wayside.
Duke Turnsen, His Majesty King Eisenhorn, Duke Grimlock, Duke Basil Monteque, Duchess Brunhilde Crosspick, and Lord Maher Koshinari voted for Obliteration.
Duke Raash, Duchess Claire Cybil, Duchess Fairfax, Duchess Attwater, Duke Verik Eliason, and Baron High Mayor Hitchcock voted for permanent exile.
As Her Grace Duchess Fairfax represented two Duchies, the council voted 7-6 in favor of exile.
On the matter of the witnesses' testimony regarding the Koshinari dagger and its appearance during Buchaneon's arrest, His Duke Raash opened the proceedings by stating that the witnesses had proven that His Majesty King Gregor Eisenhorn had attempted to assassinate a sitting Duke en route to his trial. Duke Turnsen stated that the claim had been made but not yet proven, and that at least three of the witnesses were known associates of Duke Raash, and therefore could not be trusted as they could be conspiring to aid Duke Raash in his campaign against His Majesty. Duchess Crosspick argued that since all four had presented the same conclusion, that there was sufficient evidence to believe they were all telling the truth. To the surprise of several council members, His Majesty King Gregor Eisenhorn rose to address the council and said that the witnesses were correct. He stated that he had obtained the Koshinari dagger as a way to ensure that Buchaneon would not escape punishment. He continued that Buchaneon had been entrusted to the custody of Duke Raash, whom the nobility all know to have a soft heart and softer head. Duchess Attwater objected to the characterization, noting that Duke Raash was well respected and that he would have been King himself had he not bowed out in favor of His Majesty when the kingdom was first created. His Grace Duke Verik Eliason of Southland stated his opinion that Duke Raash was a brave and once-loyal man, but that he often called for mercy when practicality demanded strength.
His Majesty continued that he had feared that Duke Raash would release Buchaneon rather than ensuring he would be tried and executed as he deserved. Because all of Wayside knew of his crimes, his guilt was a foregone conclusion and Buchaneon would have been Obliterated had he stood trial. The alleged assassin was merely a contingency plan in case Buchaneon escaped or was released. Duke Raash failed to bring him to Arbor for trial, and in fact released him, a known traitor, valuing Buchaneon's life higher than justice for the people of Wayside. His Majesty then returned to his seat.
Duke Turnsen agreed with His Majesty that Buchaneon deserved punishment, and that the vote earlier in the day had already established his guilt. He stated that Duke Raash's own actions had vindicated His Majesty when he released Buchaneon. Duchess Attwater speculated that some information might have come out during a trial which His Majesty did not want heard. Duke Turnsen objected to the statement, saying that if Buchaneon had had damaging information His Majesty wished to hide he would have used it during the rebellion over the past year. Duke Grimlock agreed, cautioning the council not to judge matters without evidence.
Duke Raash stated that the King had admitted to an attempted assassination of a Duke, and moved that a vote be called to determine His Majesty's guilt on charges of murder. Her Grace Duchess Claire Cybil of Westwood stated that the council should hear from all witnesses before making a decision, and that there was a particular piece of evidence she was waiting to see. Duchess Attwater seconded Duke Raash's motion to vote, stating that if several accusations were made against His Majesty the council should address them as they arise. Duke Turnsen agreed, adding that His Majesty had justified his actions and that the council should move on to more important matters.
Duke Raash, Duke Turnsen, and Duchess Attwater voted in favor of the motion.
His Majesty King Eisenhorn, Duke Monteque, Duchess Crosspick, Duke Grimlock, Duke Eliason, and Duchess Cybil voted against the motion.
Duchess Fairfax, Baron High Mayor Hitchcock, and Lord Koshinari abstained.
Motion failed. The council will continue discussion.
Outside, the royal Knights Ser Cha’ka and Ser Alistair Morgan are still in a stand-off on the steps of the courthouse.
