Day 4 Report:
With the matter of Baran “Bucky” Buchaneon resolved, the council spent the next days hearing the remaining witnesses.
The floor opened with Lady FallingStar, who had been allowed to give further testimony due to her prior heroics and deeds in service to Wayside. She presented a copy of Wayside's original charter, stating that she had been present when His Majesty had signed it and agreed to abide by its restrictions. Duke Grimlock examined the document and declared it to be authentic.
Lady Fallingstar reminded the council about her previous testimony regarding the Wayside charter and its guarantee of a trial for any noble accused of a crime. In addition to Baran Buchaneon, she remarked about one Squire Foss Siril, who she claimed had been sentenced to Obliteration without a trial. Baron High Mayor Hitchcock replied that trials are only given to the nobility, and that out of respect, this Squire was given one, though he had not been present. Duke Eliason elaborated that the guarantee of a trial typically is not extended to one below the rank of Knight. Duchess Fairfax stated that Squire Foss had admitted to his guilt of going back in time to save the life of the Kingdom’s enemy, the Spine Dwarf Goren, and that both she and Squire Siril’s Knight sponsor, Ser Eren Davis, had been present at his hearing.
Lady FallingStar moved on to speak about the former Vizier to His Majesty, Jonah Stone. She remarked that his actions against creatures with spirits goes against the charter of liberties and it was a vile act. As the Kingdom charter grants that all creatures with spirits are equal under the law, the existence of Gypsy Free Wayside (GFW) violates the charter. Duke Turnsen stated that Jonah Stone would be called in to speak on his involvement later. Duke Monteque stood up, requesting that Lady FallingStar repeat the exact wording on the charter. The Lady then read from her copy of the charter. Duke Basil Monteque slammed his fist upon the table. He told the council that his people were killed over and over, and no justice was ever served. He then specified 3 names: Morgan Blue, Cancera and Tauron. The Duke stated that these 3 had spirits, and had been murdered by the order of Lady FallingStar against the explicit orders of Duke Raash. Duke Raash stood also. He argued that these creatures were monsters and it was known that they were evil. Duke Monteque reiterated that these monsters had spirits, and thus protected under the laws of Wayside. There began extended arguments going back and forth between the two until His Majesty demanded silence in the hall. His Majesty, addressing Duke Monteque, requested that the topic be left for another time. The Dukes returned to their seats and Duke Grimlock asked Lady FallingStar for any final statements.
Lady Fallingstar then spoke on the actions of the adventurers. She detailed the events the day of the Queen’s death, saying that adventurers had rescued her and ensured her safety. Duchess Crosspick interrupted to say that heroic actions on the part of one adventurer were not enough to convince her that adventurers as a whole do not serve to destabilize the nation. Duke Turnsen added that adventurers are well-known to be Raash’s private army, which he used to incite rebellion and serve his personal ambitions. Duke Monteque strongly agreed and stated that adventurers are career murderers who do not answer to proper authority. Duke Raash denied the allegation, arguing that the adventurers serve the good of the kingdom, and are needed to respond to threats that the armies cannot, such as the Banshee that destroyed so much farmland in the spring. Duchess Attwater added that they restored Targosia after the salting ordered by His Majesty. Lady FallingStar stated that although the adventurers may be brash they do what is necessary to preserve the nation. In response, Duke Monteque commented about The Shattering before motioning for Lady FallingStar to continue. Duke Eliason wondered whether adventurers are more trouble than they are worth.
After much discussion, Lady FallingStar gave concluding remarks in which she reminded the Dukes of the origins of Wayside, speaking of Renlee Firstbourne and the Order of the New Dawn. She declared that the Kingdom is weakened by the war, facing threats from outside its borders; and everyone must focus to make it strong again or else fall prey to enemies of Wayside.
She was escorted out and the council concluded for the day.
Outside, after 4 days, the royal Knights Ser Cha’ka and Ser Alistair Morgan are still in a stand-off on the steps of the courthouse.
