Day 8
Duke Grimlock opened the morning by suggesting that a vote be made on a simple and easy issue that is yet be resolved: the ban on adventuring. Several council members expressed surprise when Duchess Crosspick revealed that they had nearly started a war with the Northlunds by assaulting a Hearthguard on recent diplomatic mission. Baron High Mayor Hitchcock admitted that adventurers are unruly, but pointed out that the Adventurer’s Manifesto was quite popular among his citizens in Gatik, and spoke to many of the deeper ideals of the Kingdom. Also, Adventurer branded goods were always profitable for the merchants in his family. Duke Raash, Duchess Fairfax, and Duchess Cybil all heralded the adventurers as the truest heroes of the Kingdom, citing several examples of evils they had defeated when the army or the Guilds could not. His Majesty and Duke Turnsen both reminded the assembly that the start of the council meeting was the second time Arbor had been besieged by adventurers trying to enforce their political goals, and it was only a matter of time before it happens again. After some unproductive debate, Duke Grimlock then called the council to vote on whether to legalize adventuring, or codify the extension of His Majesty’s ban.
Duke Monteque, His Majesty King Eisenhorn, Duke Turnsen, and Duchess Crosspick voted against legalization.
Duke Raash, Duchess Fairfax, Lord Koshinari, Baron High Mayor Hitchcock, Duke Eliason, Duchess Cybil, Duke Grimlock, and Duchess Attwater voted to legalize adventuring once more. The council legalized adventuring by a vote of 9-4.
Following that vote, with all the testimony and evidence presented, the issue of the fate of Duke Raash was called into question. Duke Grimlock proclaimed to the council that Duke Raash had been charged with High Treason in rebellion against His Majesty, reminding the council that Duke Raash had pled no contest the previous day. Duke Grimlock clarified that a punishment of a single resurrection to a maximum of an obliteration was recommended for such a crime. Duke Turnsen called a vote to remove Duke Raash’s lands and titles, or allow him to remain Duke of Briar Pass. Duke Raash rose to address the council once more. He stated that he stood by his words from the previous day, that he pled no contest to the charge and would accept whatever punishment the council felt was appropriate. He asked only that the council consider the reasons he had given for his actions and the reason for which they had gathered.
Duke Grimlock asked the council to prepare for the vote. His Majesty objected to Duke Raash being allowed to vote at his own trial, adding that neither should Duchess Fairfax gain two votes. Duchess Fairfax responded that it was His Majesty that gave her jurisdiction over both Buckland and Arcland. His Majesty quipped something not decent to write down. Duke Raash reminded His Majesty that he would be allowed to vote when the council addressed his own actions. His Majesty said confidently that the only evidence presented had been an ambiguous letter, testimony from a disobedient Lady, and the opinions of other adventurers and Duke Raash’s personal tree-servant. Duchess Crosspick stated impatiently that it would not matter whether they both voted or neither, since their votes would cancel out and therefore the council need not waste time debating which would be allowed to vote. Duke Eliason hushed the council, reminding the council that this was a somber occasion. He added that they ought not to argue over the evidence, as they must have all spent the night making their decisions, as he had done. Addressing Duke Raash by his first name, he told the accused that he had chosen to call for his Obliteration to ensure the Kingdom knew that the law would always be upheld. The Dukes all took their seats and proceeded with the vote.
Duke Eliason, Duke Grimlock, Duke Turnsen, His Majesty King Eisenhorn, Duke Monteque and Baron High Mayor Hitchcock voted to both depose and obliterate Duke Raash.
Duke Raash, Duchess Cybil, Duchess Attwater, Duchess Crosspick, Lord Koshinari and Duchess Fairfax voted that he remain Duke of Briarpass and take but a single resurrection.
Duke Grimlock proclaimed that the court found Duke Jocelyn Raash GUILTY of High Treason by a vote of 7-6. Duke Raash was sentenced to a single resurrection, whereupon if the resurrection is successful, he will retain Ducal rights to the Duchy of Briar Pass. Duke Raash affirmed he would abide by the ruling, and requested that he be allowed to choose the place of the execution. Duke Grimlock agreed, stating that Duke Raash would be given until the 31st of October to arrange his affairs.
The council then called for a vote on whether to remove His Majesty King Gregor Eisenhorn. His Majesty stated that like Duke Raash, he would abide by whatever ruling the council chose, but that he maintained his actions had been in service to the Kingdom. Duchess Attwater stated that she believed that the witnesses had adequately presented their case, and expressed her confidence in the judgment of her fellow Dukes. Duke Grimlock advised the council that as Dukes it was their duty to consider not just the truth of the evidence they had heard, but what the result of their decisions would mean for the future of Wayside and its citizens. He then called for the council to vote on the fate of His Majesty.
Duchess Fairfax, Duke Raash, Duchess Attwater, Duchess Cybil, Duchess Crosspick, Baron High Mayor Hitchcock, Duke Monteque, and Lord Koshinari voted to remove His Majesty from the throne.
Duke Grimlock, Duke Turnsen, His Majesty Gregor Eisenhorn, and Duke Eliason voted against removal. The vote carries 9-4 to dethrone the King. Gregor Eisenhorn rose from his seat and removed the crown, handing it to High Magistrate Oliver Stillroot. He began to leave the room, but the Magistrate stopped him, promptly reminding the council that until the council adjourns, its laws are not considered to be in effect; and further that the former King was also considered to retain his seat as Duke of Arbor, and should remain until the council concluded.
Duke Raash then declared that Duke Eisenhorn had been accused of actions against the welfare of the Kingdom, and called for a vote on the charge of High Treason against the former King. Duke Grimlock stated his belief that the evidence was insufficient for High Treason, but admitted it was strong enough to support removal of His Majesty from power. Duchess Attwater requested that a vote be called to determine Duke Eisenhorn’s guilt, if not for High Treason, then for the crimes against Targosia and Briar Pass, as any one of the many charges should carry a penalty. Duchess Cybil agreed. Duke Grimlock allowed that the council could vote to hold Duke Eisenhorn accountable for these actions and suggested they request a penalty of a single resurrection.
Duchess Fairfax, Duke Raash, Duchess Attwater, Duchess Cybil, Duchess Crosspick, Baron High Mayor Hitchcock, voted guilty.
Duke Grimlock, Duke Turnsen, Duke Eisenhorn, Lord Koshinari, Duke Monteque, and Duke Eliason voted not guilty. He was found guilty by a vote of 7-6.
Duke Turnsen then called into question the rulership of Arcland, as no Duke besides perhaps the reigning King should have two Duchies, and that was a mess left by Buchaneon. Duke Eliason suggested that Eisenhorn should be granted the Duchy, as he was yet a servant of the people and should remain that way. His errors had been punished and had never been done in malice. Duke Raash and Duchess Fairfax both disagreed strongly. Duke Turnsen suggested that Duchess Fairfax had objected due to her desire to retain the power she had so recently been granted. Duchess Fairfax replied that she had never sought her title and would happily give it up, but that any of Arcland’s Barons would serve the Duchy well. Duke Eliason stated that Duke Eisenhorn had been there at the founding of Wayside and would serve Arcland well, whoever the new King might turn out to be. A vote was then called by Duke Monteque.
Duchess Fairfax, Duke Raash, and Duchess Attwater voted against granting Duke Eisenhorn rulership of Arcland.
Duke Grimlock, Duchess Cybil, Duchess Crosspick, Duke Turnsen, Duke Eliason, Lord Koshinari, Duke Monteque, Baron High Mayor Hitchcock, and Duke Eisenhorn voted to grant Arcland to Gregor Eisenhorn. By a vote of 9-4 Duke Eisenhorn was granted the Duchy of Arcland.
Duke Grimlock proclaimed that the court had found Duke Gregor Eisenhorn guilty of crimes against the Kingdom and the general welfare, and had sentenced him to a single resurrection; whereupon if the resurrection is successful, he will retain Ducal rights to the Duchy of Arcland. The execution will be performed Friday October 31st on the steps of the council chamber. Duke Grimlock stated that he would personally see the deed done with his blade. Duke Eisenhorn bowed deeply once more, stating humbly that he accepted the ruling of the council.
Duke Grimlock then dismissed the council with the promise of two final topics to be addressed the following day, when the council will select a new King, and discuss a new charter for the Kingdom of Wayside.
