Day 9

Duke Grimlock called the final day of the council meeting to order. The council was first called to choose which of the Dukes or Duchesses present would take the throne. The council opened with an initial vote.

Duke Eisenhorn and Duke Turnsen voted for Gregor Eisenhorn.
Duke Raash, Duchess Fairfax, and Duchess Attwater voted for Jocelyn Raash.
Duchess Crosspick, Duchess Cybil, and Duke Eliason voted for Kaarl Grimlock.
Duke Monteque voted for Neheris Fairfax.
Lord Koshinari voted for Maher Koshinari.
Duke Grimlock and Baron High Mayor Hitchcock abstained.
The council required eight of thirteen Dukes to elect a King. Vote failed.

Duchess Crosspick reminded Duke Turnsen that Duke Eisenhorn had just been removed from power and questioned his decision to vote him back in as King. Duke Turnsen stated resolutely that Gregor Eisenhorn was his King and his King he shall remain. Duke Eisenhorn thanked him for his support, but said with resignation that he had accepted the council's decision to remove him. He withdrew his vote for King. Baron High Mayor Hitchcock stated that there was no point in voting for Duke Raash either, since he was a convicted traitor and anyway would probably not survive resurrection. Duchess Fairfax and Duchess Attwater protested angrily. Duchess Attwater rose to address the council, stating that Duke Raash was the most honorable of the Dukes, and that the council should have seen that he cared for the welfare of his Kingdom, even if they did not all agree with his methods, as Duke Raash had disagreed with Eisenhorn's. Duke Monteque noted that with four votes, Raash was technically in the lead. Duchess Crosspick stated her opinion that no one should vote for either traitor, and added that she supported Duke Grimlock of Northshire because she respected his judgment and trusted him to listen to any of the dukes’ counsel before making decisions that would impact Wayside. Duke Eliason voiced his agreement. Duchess Attwater paused to consider, and returned to her seat. Duke Grimlock called for a second vote.

Duchess Attwater, Duchess Crosspick, Duchess Cybil, Duke Eliason, and Baron High Mayor Hitchcock voted for Kaarl Grimlock.
Duchess Fairfax voted for Jocelyn Raash.
Duke Monteque voted for Neheris Fairfax.
Lord Koshinari voted for Maher Koshinari.
Duke Turnsen voted for Gregor Eisenhorn.
Duke Raash, Duke Grimlock, and Duke Eisenhorn abstained.
Vote failed.

Duchess Fairfax addressed Duke Raash, urging him to reconsider withdrawing from the vote, and asking him to consider the sacrifices he'd made to ensure that justice was served. To the rest of the council, she confessed that she had been aiding Duke Raash since the previous year, and that she had seen his value as a leader, speaking passionately of his commitment to protect the welfare of his people. Duke Raash shook his head, telling her that he had had his chance to take the throne at the founding of Wayside and had refused; and that he would live with that decision and support whomever the council chose, so long as the new King would support his Dukes in turn. Duke Grimlock began to echo this sentiment, but was interrupted by Duke Turnsen, who asked why the issue of Fairfax having admitted to supporting a traitor had not yet been addressed. Duke Eisenhorn stated that he'd been aware of Duchess Fairfax's role, but had chosen to overlook it due to her inexperience, adding that Duke Raash had led her astray and that there was no reason to think she would do anything foolish in the future. Duchess Fairfax declared that she was an equal member of the council and requested that the Duke not patronize her. Duke Monteque agreed, stating that Duchess Fairfax was a leader born of noble blood. Turning to face Duke Monteque, Duchess Fairfax demanded he explain why he continued to cast his vote for her, and also requested that he stop staring at her with his snake heads. Duke Monteque replied that he was a Duke and would vote for whomever he wished, and furthermore that among the many nobles he had encountered in Wayside, her late father Baron Darien Fairfax had been the only one whom he had met in honorable combat. Duchess Fairfax protested that Duke Monteque had killed him. Duke Monteque continued to stare and repeated that Baron Fairfax had nonetheless fought bravely to protect his citizens in the face of certain defeat, and he therefore honored the Baron's memory. Duchess Fairfax had no immediate reply, and Duke Grimlock called for the council's attention to return to the issue at hand.

Duke Grimlock first thanked Duchess Crosspick for her earlier words of support, and declared that he would be honored to take the crown, if such is the council's wish. He declared that as King, he would ensure that the principles on which the Kingdom had been founded would be upheld, and to always ensure the Kingdom's security and prosperity would be his highest aim. Several council members nodded in approval. Duke Eliason asked the council to consider Duke Grimlock’s leadership during the past nine days of the council meeting. After a few minutes of discussion, Duchess Crosspick moved to call a third vote.

Duchess Attwater, Duchess Crosspick, Duchess Cybil, Duke Eliason, Duchess Fairfax, Duke Grimlock, Baron High Major Hitchcock, Duke Raash and Duke Turnsen voted for Kaarl Grimlock.
Lord Koshinari voted for Maher Koshinari.
Duke Monteque voted for Neheris Fairfax.
Duke Eisenhorn abstained.

By a vote of 10-3, Duke Kaarl Grimlock was elected His Majesty King Kaarl Grimlock of Wayside and High Duke of Arbor.

The Dukes and Duchesses of the council bowed before King Grimlock. His Majesty declared that the council had made many difficult choices over the past nine days, and bid the Dukes to return to their homes and families to reflect. The drafting of a new charter for the Kingdom would be a process requiring many more days of discussion, and he wished for the council to be prepared.
