No idea on instructions, but there has to be some supplies that would work reasonably.

Camp pad or other closed-cell foams would work fine. Just has to be at least 5/8" of foam around the edge.
I would recommend using 1/4" foam on the face and edge, alternating layers (edge layer, face layer, edge, face, edge, face) so that you don't have a glue joint exposed with the potential for your shield to fall apart (as it would with face, edge, edge, edge, for example).
Alternatively, you can make the whole thing out of several layers of foam (4-5 works well) and shape the edge however you please. This way, you can also shape the shield as you make it, like adding curvature to the face.
