My fiancee and I are currently living in Santa Barbara, CA but we plan on moving to the seattle area sometime in the summer of 2005. (more likely we will end up in renton or something) I would like to lay a path to become involved with NERO Seattle while I am still down south. I am a graphic artist, photogrpaher and writer. I have a background in theater, living history and improvisational theater. I would like to contribute in anyway i can from here, ie. . . helping to create materials for ingame use, web graphics, doctoring photos. .etc etc etc. My website is listed on my profile and it is about to get a major overhaul. So if anyone has any questions or comments, feel free to drop me note.

Cheers,
Andrew Paul MacEwen

As Staff Artist, I would like to welcome you to Nero Seattle. I'll keep you in mind as more art projects come along so I can send them your way.

Welcome and good morning to you as well!

I look forward to working with you as projects come up.

and not to be weird or anything. . .

Sometimes I dont sleep well and I end up working on whatever is at hand to pass the time. Last night I re-created the NERO seattle badge on the splash page for the web site. I didnt do it to be an *** or anything and I do not want to step on anyones toes. I just really liked the concept and gave it a different treatment. It is missing the little dragon as i have not found a similar graphic nor have i yet taken the time to draw a dragon for it. (ok i did sketch out one dragon but it looked too much like the IFGS dragon thingy)

so if anyone wants to see it, drop a note to my email
pirewyn@yahoo.com
and i will happily send it to you for perusal. I also have a neat treatment for photos that will leave them looking either like pencil drawings or oil painting.
I have some golf clubs that are waiting to become boffers so cheers for now.

Drew

Hey, and welcome.

You could always do what I do; fly up every couple of months for an event (I live out near Palm Springs, CA now).

Peace,

flying . . .

That would be keen, but for the money issue. Things will be better once Rai and i move to WA as we can both make the same amount of money but rent and living costs are much lower. Rent on our 2 bed 2 bath 950sq ft apt in santa barbara is $1495 a month. We need a roomie just to make the rent. When i showed her what half of that would get us in Renton and the Seattle suburbs and told her in detail about the weather and the people it convinced her to move away from the Stepford clone that is Santa Barbara.

This way i can get involved before we get up there. . .every castle needs a foundation. >=)

Is anyone up there using the latex boffers yet?
http://www.latex-weaponry.com/

these guys are super reasonable on their rates and they will bid on custom items.

latex boffers

i prefer a blade shaped sword and those are sweet looking, but you like the shields? You guys use plywood back shileds mostly? like lighter versions of the SCA stuff right? a form with handles and a cushion of some kind round the edge?

If you go back and watch some episodes of Xena/Hercules take a look at the armor. . .none of it is metal. Most of it is made of leather, nagahide, and L200 foam which can be bought at your local craft store as fun foam. You can also buythe stuff in sheets from suppliers. There is a plastics/ foam supplier in renton if i recall (its where the SCA guys go to get the fiberglass rods for pikes mostly) i think i recall them having L200 in sheets.

Also keep an eye on ebay. A couple of good friends of mine scored when they found a butt load of lots that were being sold by the defunct production company of Xena when the show went bye bye. . .they spent about 2 grand total but i think they can outfit atleast a dozen people in some bad *** looking gear. Works great for monsters and NPC's. I will probably be taking some pics of some of it soon so i can re-create some of the pieces.

This post had a point i think. . . .ah yess foam and its uses. . . you can make a foam phys rep look pretty realistic but it is lighter and faom armor has a greater shelf life in WA then does steel. I was a heavy fighter in the SCA up there and frankly constantly polishing steel armor blows great biug cosmic goats.

How is everyone doing for feast gear and the like? I am constantly finding good deals on eating utensils that have that nice medieval look, not to mention wooden plates and bowls. I dont think i mentioned it but i also do leather work and props work. . .the other point i wanted to make. . . i know how to make boffers that have the keen shape of the latex stuff but they can be used for thrusting and will meet the saftey guidkines for more LARPS. Granted they do come out looking a little more like anime weapons. . but that isnt always bad. >=)

ok enough of my rambling.

Yes, the swords do look VERY cool, and one of our good buddies who JUST left the chapter had been bringing one as a physrep to hang on the wall. However, there are very very strict rules that the weapons have to follow when being constructed for saftey reasons among the fact that were part of an organization that follows the rules as closely as possible. So while they look and feel really REALLY cool, we just simply cannot use them. That is as clearly as it was made to me when I asked about them.

Marshal ruling:
Neither the weapons nor the shields offered by latex-weaponry.com fit within the design specs for NERO Alliance, if we're going to be strict about it. (The shields use 18mm foam. In order to meet the specs for NERO Alliance, you would need 19mm foam. (25.4mm = 1 inch, 18mm = @.7 inches, 19mm = @.75 inches). The weapons, if I'm reading this right, use 5/8" foam on the striking surface. Again, 1/8" too thin, by NERO Alliance specs.) The certificate of sale for NERO on the website applies only to NERO International, a separate organization from NERO Alliance.

I'm slightly confused by this. According to the rule book, foam must be 5/8" on the striking surface (page 28, third column, second full paragraph). The same holds true for shield edges (page 27, second column, second paragraph under shields). The weapons don't meet several criteria by my understanding, but if the shields are using 5/8" closed cell foam on the edges, wouldn't they qualify as 5/8" is .625 inches?

Yay Renton!!! I be a Renton local meself. Welcome in the future and stuff. Drop me a line when you get in the area, we can hang with the locals, Renton-style. So, uh, Yo and stuff. ^_^
