Great Moments of April

There are so many memorable moments that cannot be summed up in a single quote.

Here's my favorite. We were playing a hoard of zombies coming out of the lake one by one. It was my last run, and I was making my way up the slope to I can't remember who, but one on one, I think I would have creamed him. We were rather tough zombies with 40 hp and swung for 5n, and he was pretty damaged I think. there was nobody between him and me, but the archer, what's his name, that shoots for 13n noticed me. He hits me in the leg. I stumble and get back up, continuing my slow charge up the hill towards my victim. Twice more he hits me. My zombie stumbles with each hit, but continues on, ignoring the arrows sticking out of his body. I reach my victim, raise my sword to strike him down, and "Thirteen normal!" Zombie falls down at its intended victim's feet, just in the nick of time. I was soooooo close too...

I remember the time when the harpies managed to command Shikar. 'HOLY S#!T' I think to myself. In the end, the situation didn't turn out quite as disasterous as I immagined it could. But still, that could have been almost as bad as a berserked Krieger!

Finally, there was Lilly's idea to hide our group of trolls in the unoccupied, unwarded gypsie cabin. A few hapless adventurers wander by, and we charge out. I think we ended up dropping three PCs in that run. We made a big holler to celebrate Troll victory! Actually, out of game, we were trying to attract enough attention so you guys didn't have to res. No hard feelings there.

no problems here..

oh Vanyel and I were fine.. you dropped kasuni the MWE and vanyel and I hopped in the ward :D

As soon as you guys left vanyel jumped out to go sneek up on you as I think taran was getting the beat down and I grabbed kasuni pulled her in and fead her a cure light as she was at 52 seconds. :D

Honestly if you hadnt started so close and maybe a couple less vanyel and I could have dropped you all.. we had bearly tapped our spells for the day. :D

I did enjoy the ambush though so nice job!

Hmmm mine are...

Well my favorite part was the trial. That was so cool!

Aeris' and Polares conversation.

Story time on saturday night was very fun also.

Also when the vampires came to rescue aeris and aeris called for daylyns help.

and definatly crying...that was awesome!

Hehe... that ambush was awsome possum ^^ A little too close to death for comfort, but ah well ^^ It was one of my favorite parts of the event :P And then there were the zombies in trees that weren't really in trees ^^ Yay!
Syndel was like WHOA awsome. I loved our little waylay contest... which I lost v.v I soooo shoulda seen the reflection in the window!
Then there were the harpies... Dominated... Waylayed... Forgotten... Killed... Too close to needing a res >.< Like 30 seconds left when I got a life spell... Things have been way too close to be all like "Yay! It was safe!" But that just adds more fun ^^
And then there was Becca... hehe. I was going to die when she asked where my character card was o.o Eep!
Yeah, I soooo loved the troll ambush though XD But if we were any farther from the Celestial guild I would be soooo screwed >.< But all is awsome XD Yay! I loved the event so much I could hug it and keep it like a teddy bear forever ^^

I have to say my favorite part of the event was when I decided to hand Shikar a glass of my "peppermint spirits".......

EVERYONE in the tavern tensed,....swords were being cleared from their scabbards, and spells prepared.....the whole tavern had the look of a HUGE combat about to ensue.....at which point Shikar takes a drink......gets a huge smile on his face......and immedialtely demands to know how much the bottle is and buys it.....

The look on everyone's faces....the look of pure relief....was absolutely classic.....especially when they turned and saw a VERY smiling Gypsy...

and of course the trail.....who could foget the HONEST Gypsy

Scaring the crud out of an ogg Kasuni. Youve got to watch out for those zombies on the path at night.

Also Aeris' and D's conversation. Nate you rock!

One word: Slice.

Polare and Solomon's Antics.?

The Trial?.

The storytelling contest.

Gregor's Pouch of Phat L00t!? O_O (at the auction)

The look on Dominated Shikar's face on Sunday morning.

Marin (I think that's how you spell that name); who will be getting a letter from me soon.

Um...more later, I'm tired.

Awesome event!

Blargh wigg ef'tich eldri fab...

Trembling with fear and crying for a friend.

?Liquefaction!? ? Nye and Fiyana. And then? we started to sink?

And being nearly turned undead to teach people a lesson for leaving poor little me alone right when they turned up to get me! :-p it was close! And you KNOW it would have been funny? I?m not evil? *looks around innocently*

Hiding under a table when the undead came in? crawling forward to give Aaron a potion to give Elryon should he get hurt while he was casting Earth Storm and then crawling back under the table? *I rock!*

And not getting hit a once! HA!

I had a lot of fun PCing for the first time EVER! Thanks to everyone who made this an awesome event! :-p

Forgot to mention thanks to Becca for letting me do my idea with the 'squirrel bits' tag. I mean, what else are you realistically going to find on a wolf when you search his corpse?

As an afterthought, my first run as a wolf, I got nausiated by Kauss. Would have added a whole new level to the joke had I given it to him then. Maybe it's for the better that he didn't pursue me when I ran.

I ended up transfering it to Lilly to give out, so I can't remember who actually wound up with it, but he didn't want it for some reason.

I also shouldn't forget my kitty NPC. One of the PCs decided to name me Winceton, or Wilbert, or Wumperton... I can't remember what it was, but she named my cat NPC. I feel so loved! And I got free milk!

It was Winston ^^ yay!

I should be honest, on Sunday morning, I totally felt like I didn't have fun and that I would never come back.

Hold On, it gets better, I promise.

So, I'm sitting there going "Wait, why am I contemplating not playing NERO again? I've been doing this for seven years. What don't I like? What can I do to change it?"

And after talking to Becca on the way back from the event, I realized. It's not you, it's me. Or rather, the way I've adapted to playing NERO given the chapters I've been playing in.

A disclaimer - what I am about to say is not a mark against the PRO NERO International chapter. I know they try very hard to run the best chapter they can, but it's not just a matter of the people running the game, but the people playing as well.

Back when I started in 1998, I played one of the most ineffective, roleplaying based characters most NERO players ever met. People loved him, and at first, he was a blast to play. But then after a while, he became less and less fun. After a while, he was a downright chore to play, and I started opting for NPC duty rather than playing my character. So I helped start ARGO, having the idea that the chapter was going to have none of the flaws of that PRO had at that point. But it didn't work. After a very long discussion on the ARGO message boards, where I itemized all my gripes about NERO and what needed to be changed, I resigned my position as website administrator and took a 2 year break from playing.

Here was my biggest gripe. The roleplaying dropped out of NERO. Instead, it became NEPO (New England Powergame Organization). NERO events turned into "Progress quests". Same stuff over and over, go on mod, kill bad guys, get treasure. Sit at tavern, something with tabard shows up, kill it, get treasure. Get build, minmax build. Players weren't just competing with plot, they were competing against each other. People stopped putting out plot cards in the woods, because some people would wake up early, take all the plot cards, and them and their friends would go on all the mods. Roleplaying boiled down to a lot of Player to player stuff, but the general idea of an NPC was "walking treasure." Plot put out harder and harder monsters to make the PC's work for their treasure, to the point that monsters affected only by magic would walk around throwing imprisons like they were light spells.

So it was either beat 'em, or join them. I tried to beat them, couldn't, and it turned into either change the way I play, or don't play NERO.

So I changed the way I played. I became more interested in the intricacies of NERO battle tactics. I decided if I was going to constantly fight anyways, I might as well get enjoyment out of it. I became a min-maxer, I became a battlemonger, and our team was a walking army. Nobles deferred to our group when it came to military matters, and we were only mercenaries.

But then I came here, and found some of the BEST ROLEPLAYERS I have EVER met!

You guys run a completely different game. This isn't Progress Quest, this is NERO. Let me give a concrete example - the emissary of the Undying Isles visit to the Tavern on Saturday night.

That was some of the best NERO I have ever seen in all my years of playing NERO. In the chapters I am from, the High Ogres probably wouldn't have even survived by the time the emissary arrived. People would've rolled them in the tavern and took all their money. The undead wouldn't have even made it through the front door. There would've been a huge door battle, with anyone who was caught outside probably rezzing.

But you know what, that would've sucked. And Saturday night didn't.

That was real tension there. People really didn't know what was going to happen. And adding in a third faction, just added that much more. You didn't know who was going to light off that powder keg. And each moment just built it up more and more, until eventually the battle seemed inevitable and justified. You weren't fighting for treasure, you were fighting because there was no other choice.

To be honest, I was shocked. If anyone noticed me not fighting during the battle, that wasn't my character, that was me, Lucas, completely shocked at witnessing the scene I just did.

I didn't have fun, because I picked a generic character, who at the NERO I played would've had a great event, constantly fighting randoms while sitting at the tavern, waiting for the plot hooks to roll in and going up to the front of the big group to go kick some bootay.

But you guys don't play that game.

No, you play the game that I originally wanted to play.

And you know what, that's much more awesome. And I hope it stays that way.

So it looks like I'm going to have to change back, and to do that, I will definitely be coming back. And hopefully I can bring back my old character, and add even more to the game.

But seriously guys, you rock. Not just plot, but PC's too. I'm totally not used to people staying in character so well. At first I thought it was one of the worst games I've ever played, but now I realized it should've been one of the best. Now that I realize it, hopefully I can make it true next time around.

I feel like I just ate a teddy bear. . . All warm and fuzzy inside. . . ^_^ Thanks for the compliments!

that was definately from the HEART, and even though I am the proverbial NEW guy here..... I sincerely hope that you WILL be coming back......I myself had a BLAST at the event, and I hope that everybody does as well
